  1. I live in the area, and I use the McGowen station every day to get to work. Here's hoping (again) it finally gets off the ground. Anything is better than the superblock.

They should also move the postal office on the nearby Crawford/McGowen superblock. Totally inefficient use of land -- mostly surface parking, and even partially unpaved, empty grass lot.

I've been wanting them to turn the grassy section into a dog park. They already have the high fence around 3 sides. Just add some gates and the 4th wall of fence and its a dog park!

  2. I know this is a well-worn argument, but I cannot believe anyone WANTS to be homeless. Many people have addictions of some sort of another that lead to their homelessnes, others mental issues.

I certainly don't believe they should be abused (punched) or shipped off (cattle car comment).

Have we lost ALL compassion and civility?

To be fair, you could make a million dollars a year, but if you repeatedly begged me for money outside the CVS and then threatened to break into my car while I shop, I would want to punch you too.

Its not like Im going after just the homeless...

  3. I can understand a young woman being scared of a random person at nightime, but otherwise I think everyone is blowing the threat of the homeless way out of proportion. I also think there is a racial undercurrent that is not being acknowledged.

For the most part I agree. I say "good morning" to the homeless wanderer's when Im walking the dog in the morning. They aren't evil people. For the most part, they don't mean any harm. They need to know their boundaries though.

  4. I still want to know about the dots.

If your fiance doesn't feel safe when people get close to her, it sounds like she either needs to do something to feel more safe (like learn self defense, carry a gun, look scarier than anyone she meets) or avoid places where people might get close. Either way, it doesn't sound like homelessness is the real issue.

    Thanks for the advice Meme...

Ill make sure she starts packing heat and see's a psychiatrist immediately.

Thank goodness for this forum... I could have married a true nutjob!

  5. I can't. What do the dots show?

Why can't your fiance tolerate people asking her for money? And, given that she can't, why does she choose to live in midtown?

If you were a female, would you like strangers coming up to you? Its a matter of personal safety. She doesnt feel safe. They have to be pretty darn close to you to beg for money. How does she know thats all they want?

I choose to live in Midtown, while she lives in River Oaks. We wont be living in Midtown after we get married.

  6. How will we know which people can hang out in midtown and which people can't? Maybe we should tattoo anyone who can't produce proof of a mortgage to clarify that.

Nice sarcasm, but seriously, my fiance cant put gas in her car at night in Midtown by herself because people come up to her asking for money everytime. She cant go to CVS by herself at night for the same reason.

Then I find out that there are places offering these guys a bed to sleep on and a hot shower for $15/night. Can you connect the dots? I think you can.

  7. Hello all,

I'm looking for information regarding a 1950s restaurant that was located in the Texas Medical Center. The restaurant is called Peter Pan Dude Ranch located at 6504 South Main St.

Does anyone have any photographs of the restaurant? Perhaps there is some postcards, or matchbooks of this place? Is anyone old enough to have ate here that can share some stories and memories?

    Thanks in advance.

  8. All that money and they practice in a bubble. I think they Coogs have a better indoor setup than the Texans.

Good luck growing grass inside that building. Isnt the point of a bubble, is so you can grow grass? That way, the field they are practicing on is similar to the field they are playing on?

You wouldnt want to practice on Astroturf, then play on grass if you dont have too.

  9. Wow lots of robberies along the metro rail line. That's pretty scary.

Here's a good website with monthly crime data in google maps. I find it interesting to look at what times the crimes occurred. A quick glance at midtown shows that a significant number of the robberies happened during daylight. I didn't realize it was that bad.

Awesome site. Thanks. Much easier than my method!

  10. So you want to see seperate maps? Not a problem...

However, can you or someone else explain what the difference is?

The way I understand it, is Robbery is taking something from someone by using force.

Aggravated Assault means a weapon was used, but something wasnt necessarily stolen?

If someone can clear up how the police label crimes, that would be helpful.

Im engaged and just bored at work. This little project took about 5 minutes of excel filtering and 5 minutes of batch file processor on google.

  11. Seeing the post in the Howl at the Moon thread about someone getting held up at gunpoint concerned me as just 2 weeks ago, I found out a similar thing had happened in East Midtown. I know Midtown isnt the safest place, but I had been unaware of people being held up at gunpoint when walking around the bars.

I took the latest monthly data (October) from the police website and pulled up the Midtown Beats. I pulled out only Robbery and Aggravated Assaults and plotted them on google.

Here is a screenshot of the outcome. I can post the live map link, but it seems very processor intensive, so a jpg is more useful.

Remember, this is only for the month of October.

I can pull up other crimes or other areas of town if you wish.

  12. I forget which one I went too, right on 59 near the village. It was a gift, so I tried them out. Soap was still on the back of the car when it came through the washer... they simply dried it off.

I said, h*&l no and made them wash it correctly.

That was the first and last time I used either of those "premier" wash services.

The $4 automatic wash down the street does a better job!

But 9 times out of 10, I just wash both of the cars myself. It really doesnt take very long. Maybe 45 minutes each.
