  1. An allusion was made in one interview regarding consideration of offers to lease out the Alabama eventually, if anyone could afford it. Doesn't sound very negotiation-friendly, but maybe that's just me. Also, they can sell or lease either theater all day long, but it won't do much good if a group has to have a monthly volunteer sell a kidney to lease the parking, or if they won't allow parking at all. The Village Arcade garage on Morningside has warning signs about parking for Brian O' Neill's, Woodrows and the Ginger Man threatening towing.
  2. My sister worked at the Penney's in the '70's when they had a tack and saddle department, of all things. I would go with my dad to pick her up when she was on the later shift and read the horse care books while we waited for her.
  3. From what I've heard, Alexander would not entertain any offers. That does sound odd to me; a developer not considering a buyout. Either that's not the case or the rumors about bad blood between the Weingarten & Alexander branches of the family are true. Perhaps someone will have to make the "unfortunate decision" to change the company name due to all the bad publicity....you know this is being followed in more cities than Houston, right? My nephew in San Francisco heard about the impending demolition this past weekend. That could just be preservation-minded SF, or people are taking notice since California is one of the states WR has projects in.
  4. For the same reason that national news crews can only find backwoods yahoos with missing teeth whenever they do a story in Texas. I think they have a guy on staff that they bring along and put in different clothes/hairpieces. My husband and I were in Galveston yesterday and went to Murphy's Pub for a pint. He commented to the barkeep that it was nice to still have someplace where he could enjoy a quiet pipe along with his Guinness, even thought he had to drive 50+ miles to do it. Another bar parton overheard and remarked that he was glad he didn't live in a place where city council could tell thousands of business owners what to do on their own premises, but couldn't do anything about one bulldozer-happy developer destroying historic properties.
  5. Think one is sit-down and one is drive-through only; not sure which is which. If the drive-through is on your side of the street and you exit to proceed in the same direction, it could be convenient, but I wouldn't want coffee bad enough to fight across West Gray traffic during rush hours.
  6. If WR has tripled the rent on tenants there like they did to my insurance agent with his tiny neighborhood storefront, nothing but chain franchises with deep pockets will be able to afford it.
  7. I'm glad somebody else remembers Western Kitchen! After my dad got back from his one after-work beer with his cronies at the Alabama Ice House on Friday evenings (real wild man he was), we'd either go to Western Kitchen or pick up Someburgers from the little stand on S. Shepherd. WK also had a chicken and dumplings bar that was only open after 5 PM. Another neighborhood pick-up favorite in the 70's was Herfy's hamburgers, located where the Whataburger in S. Shepherd is now. First time I ever had horseradish, and it hooked me for life. Also Alfie's Fish & Chips in the row of shops on Richmond near Mandell. I had many a lunch at Beef-N-Bun as well in the 80's. A friend of mine had an exotic car restoration shop called Contemporary Classics off of W. Fuqua - fun place to hang out on a Saturday.
  8. If any smokers go to shows at the Meridian, they are building a smoking area on the Bell Street side. Can't really have shows sponsored by Camel and no facilities for smokers. Also, I understand that all bars who currently sell cigs can continue to do so. Patrons just have to smoke them in the area, which sounds like it will be pretty nice at Meridian, at least.
  9. I'll have to remember that one - my buds & I have called old-school-Montrose wannabes fauxbos for years. A lot of our gay friends got sweet house deals in Westbury. I inherited my parents' home on Effingham and tried living there for a year, but I just couldn't get over the sadness I felt at walking in and not seeing my dad at the breakfast room table.
  10. Well, at the risk of being called all kinds of nasty names for not having children of our own (though we have a long history of borrowing nephews and spoiling them frightfully), my husband and I go to pubs to linger for a few hours, maybe throw some darts with friends or read, and generally relax on a Saturday or Sunday. I'm 46, he's 34, we've been together for 12 years - we don't do trendy bars or worry about impressing anyone but one another. He smokes two or three pipes during that time, and we usually spend at least $60-$70 between lunch, drinks, and something to take home for dinner. He doesn't have to smoke, but the pipe on the table is usually our last line of defense against a table with potentially-uncontrollable children. If the children run in ahead of the parents screaming and are not corrected, he lights up the pipe, and the family usually sits somewhere else. Mind you, I'm not talking about children who have a firm grasp on the concept of indoor voices and behavior in someone else's place and are there because mom and dad are tired and want to get in out of the heat and have a few drinks - the pub we frequent has video games near the pool tables and darts area, and parents usually send the kids over there to entertain themselves. I'm talking about the ones who like to play chase around the tables, throw food at each other (we've been hit by some badly-aimed fries more than once), or who are obviously overdue for a nap and sit and cry for over 20 minutes (twice since his birthday lunch in April - we timed it for the heck of it). The Village is a big shopping area, and this is bound to happen - we understand this - but whereas management can say something to adults who are getting out of control over a game on TV or have had a bit too much, saying something to a child or a child's parents, even in the interest of the child's safety (not to mention the servers or other patrons) is looking for trouble, according to every server I've ever asked. We've always sat in smoking sections to avoid this problem, and will be sorry to see them go for that reason. Yes, we can sit outside and often do in cool weather, but it's the quiet, comfortable wood-paneled pub atmosphere over a pint of Guinness we enjoy.
  11. *shrug* No idea what she meant, then. Maybe she was referring to one specific project that didn't happen, or maybe his wife liked to attend parties to which he was invited, and as a wise man once said, "If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!" I remember hearing about a universal shunning of Suzanne Saperstein before she & David moved to Malibu - Houston society doesn't strike me as a group anyone to whom that sort of thing is important wants to cross. Or maybe some of that set just doesn
  12. There's a rental hall on Long Point with fake light-up palm trees in the parking lot. Maybe WR can give them a call and find out where they can get some. One of my clients made an interesting comment. My firm does business with some individuals whose names frequently appear bold-typed in the society column, and one called me yesterday. After 10 years, we have a good chatty relationship and she brought up the Chronicle article. She then chuckled and asked if I had seen mention of Drew Alexander attending any "important" parties lately. I hadn't, not that I look for his name, considering I get queasy every time I see it. She then made a kind of sing-songy hum and said "You'd be amazed at how many multi-million deals start over a cocktail glass and there are a lot of people in this town with long memories...." It's still a business relationship, so I didn't press any further, just said, "Uh-oh!" and laughed with her, but what I got from that is that he's now PNG with at least some of Houston society, and his decisions regarding the River Oaks Center could possibly affect his business here for quite a while.
  13. *sigh* Adam Ant.... saw him at some club off of Fondren in 1982, I think. Only other Ant still with him was Marco. "Stand and Deliver" was blaring out of my stereo once and I don't know if it was harmonic convergence or just my ratty speakers, but I swear all three of us in the car heard him yell "Stand in the liver!"
  14. Sevfiv to the rescue again! But now that it's being declared a landmark, Weingarten's goes "lalalala" with fingers stuck in ears. Cracks me up the way they used to pimp this. Kind of like making a good living from sending one's daughter to work on the streetcorner, then disowning her because she's no longer a virgin.
  15. I notice that Weingarten's River Oaks Shopping Center website no longer waxes poetical about the historical aspect of the center - wish I'd thought to print out the old verbage while it was still up there.
  16. My husband saw it last night, remarked after we were past it, and I looked back - glad it's another house with the dumpster in the driveway. From what he described, I thought it was Ash's house - never mind. Across the street - isn't something being done to the huge house at 1000 Kirby? Was that on the market some months ago?
  17. He's been closed on Mondays recently - hours I have on my menu say 6:30 AM to midnight during the week, 7 AM to 1 AM Saturday and 8 AM to 10PM on Sunday. The number is 713-957-2875 if you want to check that before you go. Enjoy! Now I'm thinking about their veggie french bread pizza.
  18. As of last night, the porte-cochere is almost completely gone, and there's a huge scrap dumpster in the driveway. It was too dark to see much other than that. Of course, they could just be changing the front profile, but that's an awfully big dumpster.
  19. Hey, Boognish! Another welcome to the neighborhood! You might want to try Petrol Station later at night to avoid the kiddos. My husband and I have walked up there with our dog from across Ella around 7:30-8 on weeknights, and it's been quiet. Or stop in early on a weekend morning for coffee and breakfast. The owner has two children (3, maybe?) and they're around a lot now for the summer, as well as their friends. We love Petrol Station for the beer selection - it's great to be able to get a dark beer other than Shiner (not that there's anything wrong with Shiner). Until we win the lottery and open our Irish pub, it's our close-by place for a drink out.
  20. There's one on the east side of Yale after I-10, but be darned if I can remember the cross street.... I'll look this weekend. UPDATE: 714 Yale at Pappas Bros. is now the only one I see on Yale. If it's newspaper you want to get rid of, the SNAP clinic on Durham can always use it - they go through a lot lining the critter cages.
  21. Find out which company is doing the demolition. Hack their system and send the bulldozers to Drew Alexander's address on Friar Tuck. J/K
