  1. I was searching for a new breakfast place to eat on sunday, and didnt want to go to LePeep, LaMadeline, or my favorite Buffalo Grill on buffalo speedway.

My girlfriend and I did some searching around and we found a place that was ranked really well by Citysearch, Fountain View Cafe, near San Felipe and Fountain View.

This place had a great atmosphere, a classic 60's, 70's interior decor, warm friendly employees, and the food was great.

I had eggs, hash browns, and a muffin. My brother had biscuits and gravy that were legendary, and my girlfriend had french toast.

We really enjoyed it, and I just wanted to share my experience about it with you guys!

Sorry, dont have any photos to share!

  2. hi, i am new to this site. i grew up in sharpstown, on sandstone just west of kendalia, and my parents had a restaurant on bellaire. it was around the corporate/ranchester stretch of bellaire. originally it was a mexican restaurant called La Fogata (not the same as the San Antonio one). it was open for about a year and then we changed it to a hamburger/seafood bar place called Onion's. that lasted about a year as well. this all would have taken place between 1981-1983.

before we opened the restaurant(s) there was a german restaurant called Brauhaus at that location. I remember there was a sports bar of sorts called the Blue Huddle Club, an arcade called Space Invaders, a Mr. Gatti's, a chinese restaurant called Shanghai City (incidentally that was the only chinese restaurant in that general vicinity at the time :) ) , and a vietnamese supermarket called Cho Que Huong i think.

man those were some great memories. i was around 11-13 years old at the time. does anyone remember a freestanding building on bellaire that was a restaurant called Burger Mountain, Soda Fountain? i think it is a great vietnamese sandwich shop now called Don Cafe. Does anyone remember my family's restaurant(s)?

    take care,

    -erick

My office is right near corporate/bellaire, and Id LOOOOOVE to see some photos, or hear about more history about this area.

Ive been around this area since the late 90's, and as far as I can remember theres been nothing but asian restaurants, strip shopping centers, etc.

  3. I was looking at the fantastic pictures of those old homes in the link posted by marmer. I was hoping to find one of my grandparents' houses, either on Main or on Elgin. I didn't find either, but there was one of a magnificent house at 3112 Main, which must have been on the NW corner of Main and Elgin, right across the street from my grandparents' house at 3111 Main. I have posted the only picture I could find that shows some of their house. My aunt is the "flapper" on the left. This photo was taken in 1925. My grandfather had a business that made molded concrete pots such as those shown in the picture. I never saw this house, since it was torn down a few years later. A Magnolia gas station replaced it. They moved to a house which was directly behind it, on Elgin. That is where I lived as a very young boy from 1941-1946. I remember the gas station very well and the big homes that were still in the area, some of which were in the process of going downhill. There were three within a block or so that had become room-and-board houses. One at the NE corner of Main and Rosalie even had a small trailer park with about 4-5 trailers occupying the space behind it and over to Fannin. There was a big house on the other side of us on Fannin and Elgin that had a big porch around the front and side and two huge magnolia trees in the front yard. The houses are gone, but I still have some wonderful memories from that time and place.

    57Tbird,

Was your Aunt, and relatives Greek ? Or Italian ?

Just curious, your aunt looks a little Greek.

  4. I graduated from Lee in 1994.

It was run down at that time, and had become a school that seemed to be exclusively for children of migrant / day laborer workers at that point. I know its even more so now. I think its because of all of the low rent apartments along westpark/bellaire/gessner area.

Granted, it wasnt one of the worst schools at that point, and there were a good amount of kids that didnt cause trouble, got their work done, and had good morales, but from just looking at the school you might think otherwise.

  5. First New Orleans Po' Boys, then Diedrich's, then Helios, now this...

Is every cool place in Houston under assault?

If a buyer can be found to reopen the place, I hope they don't fix it up too much. Sometimes people scrub the charm right out.

The Pig Stand allowed me to brag that my butt has occupied the same stool as Shirley MacLaine's. :D It was one of the settings used in The Evening Star.

New Orleans Po' Boys is closing/has closed !!! ?

  6. Wow ! That photo of the empty lot in front of Lee is amazing.

Amazing how much its changed over the years.

I went to Lee between 92-94, CLASS of 94 ! Im glad to be out of there. Its even more amazing to look at the changing demographics of the schools students over the years. I am a white male, and was a minority in the early 90's, I can only imagine what its like there now.

  7. Adventure Bay water park on Beechnut ?

What was the name of this place before it was Adventure Bay ?

Anyone know how this place is still in business ? It looks like its really run down, and it continues to get worse. PLUS I never see anyone there !

If you have input on visiting it as a child, or recent story, OR EVEN better old pictures of this place, PLEASE post it !

    Thanks !

    Cory
