  1. Typical Houston conservatism...Reliant and Toyota Center are very bland and nothing like our Dallas counterparts when it comes to the AA Arena or Cowboy Stadium. Looks like more effort was put into Minute Maid. We'll see about the Dynamo The Texans gameday atmosphere is pretty boring also
  2. they've ran to Westfield only to run to the Woodlands...that's apart of life..at least they documented it
  3. I live out here also and the lack of restaurants you see here compared to the suburbs amazes me. Most of the new stuff are tailored to individual taste as opposed to families I thought with the addition of shops on Shepherd we would get something else better than a Subway.
  4. Biggest difference is that 5th ward residents are landowners as opposed to 4th ward which were easy to run off. Some folks have got bold and tried townhome projects in 5th ward and alot sit empty also. Yall see it as new buildings and $$$...I see it that the residents have to move elsewhere and usually its a suburban area not designed to handle an influx of city folks. You close Allen Parkway Village, where do they go? Lets fill some of those empty high rises along Allen parkway then
  5. why wasn't an effort made to retain the history of the area and keep the residents around? They could just add on to Lincoln and have Carnegie attend there.... 4th ward is an example of gentrification that benefits developers in the short-term.....5th ward is right around the corner with more land, are they scared to go over there?
  6. ask someone who bought a house off Fondren or Antoine blocks from run down complexes only to see their value drop and see what they'll tell you...
  7. Wendy's on West Bellfort near Fondren...RIP Their practices make me wonder on the areas they remain open/shut down...
  8. Hope it all lasts though...On Highway 6 in Mo. City, Arby's and Buffalo Wild Wings bit the dust There;s a Carl's Jr. and a 5 Guys right next to each other....alot of competition Hasn't something already closed in the Town Center already?
  9. But now, instead of folks making conditions better for them, your now running them off to areas that aren't used to the city elements and then you create another situation.. The reason why Fondren, Antoine, Sharpstown, 1960 @ I-45, Greenspoint is what it is because people ran folks away from certain areas and dropped them in places that aren't/weren't designed to handle what goes on in urban areas. When they built those big homes in that area, there wasn't a transient population walking the street....but lo and behold, when folks started losing their homes for whatever reason in DT, they were sent to those places due to bus line and cheap housing/apartments. What happens now? The original folks get tired and move out to far-flung suburbs miles away from the city and now those areas designed for one thing are taken over and have trouble adjusting to a different demographic... All from a simple little school
  10. hope it goes up..that project looks similar to those hi-rises on the Beltway and Bellaire with noting but concrete blocks, steel wire and weeds as a reminder. Also looks like the "Promenade" at the Beltway and 288 that never went up also. If the Astroworld land remains dead, that'll determine what's really coming. I'm not sure if its a South Side thing but the miles of broken streets that never seem to connect has plagued that side for years. Buffalo Speedway will eventually end at Willowbend (hasn't opened yet) but there's a brand new, unused and vacant stretch that begins at Orem and leads to nowhere....it has 4 lanes and full of street lights to light the weeds at night. Same with Airport on how that breaks up at Almeda and doesn't flow freely until Hillcroft...West Orem flows until 288 but there's a new stretch from Scott that goes to Telephone....Kirby is another one also
  11. Was there a study before they built those apartments by the malls that died? It was no coincidence that malls with newly built apartment complexes ended up dying due to the fall of the apartments. Northline, Gulfgate, Greenspoint, Sharpstown, West Oaks... I remember the Srat Wars themse at Foleys....that was the only reason I wanted to go there before we went inside the actual mall.
  12. centrally located? DT isn't exactly the easiest place to get to if you live far. It's easier to get to CV now as no traffic is going down Scott Street compared to DT. Why didn't these "developers" imporve the conditions for the folks living there then...seems like they were concerned with filling a quota and that was imporving the AP Village to shut folks up and then raze everything else. To me, its ugly now with a stucco townhouse on a small street jammed into a lot its not built for next to small row houses.
  13. So again, why build a new campus when you have one now? Its said to see 4th ward just destroyed....if something major happens and people leave 4th ward in droves similar to how they did 3rd ward, south park, etc., what plans are in place to prevent those condos from being overran?
  14. I grew up near Mo. City and my parents were fortunate to be first generation college grads so of course, they wanted to achieve the American Dream of getting a house in the suburbs in the 70s. They did just that, and over the course of time, alot of white familes left for whatever reasons but the people moving in mostly were college grads so it wasn't like you were downgrading. To make a long story short, the high school I attended became predominately black but it had community pride as we wanted to be the best in everything. It worked also as the sports team were nationally known, fine arts, etc. Even outperformed our district counterparts in academic subjects. But of course, the district steps in, begins to bus folks from our zone way across the district to 2 separate schools claiming we were overcrowded when we never where. Lost alot of kids as a result with a different type of teacher and environment. I've never been a fan of busing kids away to satisfy a few egos because you create long term effects which is what my high school is going though now. I don't support letting folks choose districts unless your parent works at a particular feeder school where you want to attend. You chose to live in one area so accept it.
  15. they have their own school now after fussing to leave Jones...why the extra money?
  16. Like you said, I would like to see pre-integration records as post integration records that wasn't their true team as MC Williams was a high school then in Acres Home and they had alot of kids also from the area. I got to observe Smith more in his latter years....especially the 30-point meltdown against PA Memorial in the playoffs back in 2003....when the talent began to suffer Smith picked the right time to get out like Carson did at Ike. When the schools like Westfield began to rise (alot of Aldine grads began to move up Veterans) Aldine's talent base began to dwindle overnight. Acres Home has even changed as not as much talent there anymore unless you bring it back together as one...everyone has left towards Spring as Westfield and DeKaney has most of the talent but its not enough for 2 schools to succeed at a high level...
  17. I finished in 96 but got to know Aldine folks in college....I can't speak for the 70s but Aldine High was a monster in the 80s and 90s and I know for a fact that had alot to do with Acres Homes even though I thought it was closer to Booker T. still.... Ike began to benefit more from folks moving into apartments on Antoine and the demographic change off 249 as folks I knew lived right across the street from an Aldine hood' on Ella and Gulf Bank were sent there...Ike began to be a force in the 90s and it also helped that Scarborough High sucked and the better talent just went down the street MacArthur was up-and-down during my time as all I remember was Odell James....but I had a good friend who lived in Pine Trails off 59 who to this day is upset they weren't zoned to North Forest Klein Forest began to make its run also thanks to the back side of Acres Home at that time....I used to date someone off of Alabonson and she lived 2 blocks from Ike in Inwood West but 3 miles from Klein Forest... its a shame that area was split like that.....wish folks would've fought it then as imagine a Carver High that had community support...
  18. help me out...why was Acres Home zoned to Aldine ISD and then had kids bused to 3 different high schools within the district? Then you have part zoned to HISD and then the part to Klein for desegregation purposes Why wasn't Carver kept as a functional high school as it made sense to keep kids there than to transport them all across the district as I remember kids who lived right across the street going to Ike and some to Aldine... Outside of athletic purposes, which benefited Aldine High instantly, why wasn't Acres Home left alone instead of splitting it up?
  19. When I was at BB they resigned their lease for at least another year.... as for Wal-mart....why close? That's a highly trafficked place and there's no other Wal-Mart until you get to Pearland to the east, west airport and 59 to the west, missouri city to the south and dunlavy to the north or now Silber and I-10.....its always packed so I doubt it closes unless they plan to move to vacant land nearby Why did Chilis close? Olive Garden would be safest choice as the closest one is OST and Main or 59 South...Carinos doesn't have much name value and Chedars would be choice #2
  20. white flight is why Houston is the way it is now.... They run, build, only to run again leaving behind massive empty tracts of real estate from South Park to Pearland HISD built schools to accomodate white flight but those schools sit empty now and the reason why the district is what it is... Fort Bend, Aldine, Spring branch, etc. is/ha gone thru the same...
  21. it never was bad to begin with....the movie theatre never was updated when the next wave of stadium seating came in while the rest of the businesses depended on the traffic from the theatre that Wal Mart does record business so I'm not surprised it's coming...
  22. I saw the ad also....but it's supposed to be pairied with some ice cream place also I remember the Highway 6 one...lol....yes, it would take forever..
  23. how many times do I need to repeat this....if a major street from a majority african american /hispanic neighboorhood runs into an affluent neighborhood and there's bus lines, affordable housing along the way.....the affluent area will change... Veterans Memorial is the sole reason 1960 is what it is..you start in Acres Home and work your way north...but as you drive past the beltway towards 1960 (especially behind that shipley's), someone built some cheap developments years ago that eventually caused people who grew up there to move north when they got older if anything, the greedy developers who may not live near these areas cause half the problems
  24. used to live in Tomball...right in front of the hospital....what will be interesting is will the new high school take on an "elitist" mentality considering where it is at and it's proximity to Cy-Fair ISD and Klein ISD... Fort Bend ISD is a perfect example how they quickly label high schools by where they are at Growth has helped Katy....your only as good as what moves in....
