  1. Outside of the Tomball location and not sure if the Klein one remained open....why not go on and make it a central market to anchor the area? Your going to need a landmark to get folks consistently coming back..grocery stores are the right draw the rest of the stores I can find closer to 1960 if I need ot get in and out...people are more loyal to grocery stores
  2. OK folks...time for another bond election for more new schools and more taxes...thanks!
  3. I've noticed also the 2234 centers sit vacant while anything off 518 fills as soon as the foundation hardens..they HAVE to do something with 2234...too much traffic now with little light at night.... I grew up across the tracks near the salt mill and my old area is finally beginning to develop with all the freeway access....my only gripe is when will a major, full-service grocery store ever come to our area? The HEB at BW8 and West Fuqua never materialized and the rest now are Foodaramas which are decent but they're not full-service... Outside of Kroger on 518..what else is out there?
  4. don't know why Texas Southern doesn't get in on this and come up with some type of design concept so they can get a stadium out of this also....
  5. I work at GSU....just left Houston this weekend but Shreveport is my new favorite place because it reminds me of a decent city as I can't get home as much I saw they bulldozed the strip on Post Oak where Gulf Shores used to be...it fronts Gasmer and I know it was on that Bayou Redevelopment site Where I grew up (Briargate)..I've never seen a flood to this day..when Allison hit...we were high and dry...but the back part of the neighborhood isn't developed and left in its original state due to oil wells and the antennas which probably helps control floods...
  6. real simple answer...Klein Forest received the southern half of Acres Homes for racial purposes years ago and the part of Inwood that was zoned to KISD switched over to being majority black. Bammel N. Houston offers direct access to Acres Homes and homes along the street changed as public access improved...if you drive down Veterans its 100% minority and it's a straight shot to I-45 and Acres Homes Westfield changed the same way but it wasn't because of rezoning...that area, along with Klein Forest, was a move-up area from Acres Home and Aldine ISD and anytime a suburban area borders a large, minority area, the suburban area changes if the homes aren't out of price range in addition to an abundance of apartments
  7. what year you finished from GSU? I'm a PV grad but have the strongest connection to GSU literally right about now
  8. GSUTiger...lol.. I grew up near Post Oak but on the other side of main...with Windsor Village getting a new church and the new roads out there my old area is the place to be finally.....Hillcorft and BW8 is undergoing massive growth and how that takes off will determone how things grow...but we're only 12 miles from downtown and with main being an expressway we're in one of the better parts of town
  9. upscale shopping is close to where these upscale people work also.....
  10. When I mentioned faster developments... I grew up near Hillcroft and Beltway 8 which is now the intersection of the FB Toll Road and 2 miles up home of the Hwy 90 expressway that will go all the past Sugar Land with no stop lights we've had buying power for years but for one reason or another businesses never developed the area once the 80s dried up as older businessed died for one reason or another but with the south half of Highway 6 developing with no real merchants except for Walgreens, etc. and the longetivity of the neighborhoods in the area along with the the FB Toll Road's access to Main and Downtown...retailers have begun to take notice.. I go to the parents house one day in 2006 and at the corner of BW8 and Hillcroft is a Home Depot sign with strip centers and restaurants coming soon.....it's 2007 and the Home Depot has arrived, NTB opened, Washington Mutual and several other national restautant chains such as Chili's which was damn near unheard of at the time in my area New Quest has the land across the street and will most likely run the gas station off and develop that big parcel also... ------------------------------ when I lived off 249 and 1960..I liked the HEB but was mad when they snatched it away and the only option was Tomball's which was too crowded when they finally renovated it. The HEB Urban Concept plan was a disaster as none of the stores in urban areas modeled after Gulfgate came to fruition because Acres Homes was planned for one and I was going to shop there... At least its finally coming back...but as for the other stuff...typical cookie cutter stuff....unless your area never had much it's not going to be the big draw they think
  11. I've seen developments in older, less affluent neighborhoods get more commitments in record time from retailers than this place...
  12. I lived right by Willowbrook Mall in the midst of it all and I also stayed in Tomball so I know the area I like to eat great, etc. but I prefer The Woodlands setting as of now over Vintage...they opened a brand new PF Changs on 249 but I still drove to the one in The Woodlands.... Where I lived, I could get to anywhere in Houston is less than 20 minutes on a clear day..unless Vintage has something I just got to have the merchants listed aren't enough to make me drive there first... Might as well stroll down 1960 and I can basically get what I need....when I lived in Tomball, I wasn't far from The Woodlands so basically Vintage Park's future success will depend on the surrounding areas..not the immediate areas. The massive strip center where AMC 24 is on 249 gets alot of its business from individuals inside the Beltway
  13. to me, it's oversaturated already....there are 10 to 15 ways to 1960 already if you want to shop and you have enough retail along 249 to satisfy most folks.....in all reality, there isn't that much of a demand for "luxury" shopping like some think - especially out that way Vintage Park will pull from Champions but apart of Champions sits directly on 1960 so their base is split in half the next massive neighborhood is planned for Magnolia and unless 249 is a true freeway, they will have their own strip centers to choose from and by then 1488 will be much-improved and offer quick access to The Woodlands... it's a small gamble and may be some time before it takes off like they want...
  14. Please...HISD folks with the cash shipped their kids to Bellaire, Lamar or any of the special magnet schools..what I cannot figure is how HISD extends way out there in between 3 school districts... Westside High was built to give HISD another "flagship" public school because Bellaire and Lamar has seen its best days...problem with Westside outside of recruiting inner city athletes is that their athletic facilities (varsity) are nearly 25 miles away... they play way at Butler Stadium on Main which is closer to the loop along with Lamar and Bellaire....hardly no fans will drive out there to watch them as it is with no real history behind the school....
  15. I grew up across main street near Hillcroft and remember the Square but didn't realize the impact as a kid.... the bottom line was the area got rough...I remember the taco bell on chimney rock where it was nothing but a place to be robbed at...the strip center that used to be behind it was always vacant the apartments never did much for the area and when people began running to Sugar Land things never recovered in the area...but when you cross bellfort though it's still nice and the homes have held up well...great access to the loop and anywhere in Houston.
  16. I ate at Carvel/Cinnabon once on 1960.....it's regular ice cream to me and I recommend the mall Cinnabons instead...
  17. "Children At Risk"...didn't know there were that many "at-risk" 30 miles from the city...don't know what formula or crap they used for that but all that will do is move more folks to move west thinking life is better out there outside of the Charter School on there.....those schools in the top 10 have a entirely different pool of kids to choose from with majority having access to two parents, affluent households and other things..... according to that list I should be a failure and my college educated parents made a bad move by enrolling me at a school that's low on the list 15 years ago
  18. makes me want to consider settling in Navasota and take advantage of the offshoot growth
  19. Good...that means less wait time at the Woodlands location...lol
  20. Texas Southern need a stadium and HISD needs an inner-city stadium to keep Lamar, Bellaire, Wheatley, etc. from playing too far away from their campuses..the solution is build one together Lamar never draws much of a crowd but I can see how when most of the kids don't live near each other and there's no real sense of neighborhood pride. Plus, if I live in River Oaks and given the option of staying home or fighting traffic to see Lamar play Lee at Butler Stadium, might as well stay home. Only time Lamar's students show is when they'll play Yates or so and that's because most of the athletes live that way or somewhere in South Park.
  21. My parents experienced it when they moved to the subdivision I was raised in during the 70s...the older residents moved out and as blacks moved in which led to the emergence of the Highway 6 portion of Missouri City and Sugar Land. why the flight? Can it be explained? Blacks at that time were mostly in 3rd ward by TSU and had Dowling Street as their main artery...what event triggered white flight across 610 further south when they had a stronghold in the area? whites had palm center, then the intersection off MLK near Jutland (I think, the lot is abandoned now) and then they moved south near Sterling and had the area on telephone and bellfort....the yum yum pit is gone, the baskin robbins is gone, etc. Now, it's Pearland, Clear Lake, League City....etc. Looks like white flight destroys more areas than anything
  22. why did the area change and residents move further south towards hobby? With that location I couldn't see how an area can change so fast....problem is...the people kept moving and every neighboorhood towards the beltway along telephone, bellfort, mlk, etc. looks the same now because residents aren't stable..
  23. Lamar, Bellaire....none of those schools have any pride.....the kids don't attend football, basketball, events, etc. because I guess they think Butler Stadium is too far....that's a big chunk of high school life...no community pride Most of the athletes at those schools aren't zoned there anyway....most of Lamar comes from the 3rd ward or the Southside just like Bellaire. Those schools are good if your kid wants to go to school and come back home
  24. won't work........all it takes is one incident and the plans are scrapped.....
  25. I remember the commercials but never thought anything else about it until recently... I was at Astroworld in the early 90s and used this thing called Yak or Yack....it was somewhat of a computer but it let you call to other computers and you could look things up. It was an early edition of the internet but very few people had it.... What was the concept and does anyone have links to any sites?
