  1. The Horseshoe pit was built by Mr. Fine who lived in the trailer park at the Trailer closest to the pit. I lived in the Village Way Apartments on the other side of the fence. I lived in the same apartment for 17 years, I also had a friend that lived in a house on Plum Creek named Tim Clendinum, also a friend that lived in the other apartments on Plum Creek his name was Mike Kimsey and then the brother and sister whose parents owned or operated the trailer park, thier name was Rhino and Janice. Small world.
  2. I remember the Malibu Grand Prix off I45 near Little York one of three that were here in town.
  3. I remember back in the early 90's there was a rumor that Walt Disney was thinking about putting a theme park West or Northwest of Houston but didn't think the economy could support two parks. Does anyone else remember this? or was I dreaming.
  4. Would anyone have any pictures of the inside or outside of the gulfgate cinema or maybe even a close up picture of the walkover bridge from gulfgate mall? I have seen alot of aerial photos but you can't see any details and it looks like they were taken before the cinema was built.
  5. Not sure if any one mentioned this one or if there still around.
  6. Does anyone remember what the name of the church that was at Woodridge and Winkler Dr? It was in the corner of the Gulfgate parking lot. It was a big brick building with a tall white steeple. I lived in the apartments across the street from there (Gulfgate Village Apts) passed by it a million times, never went inside, I went to a Lutheran school five days a week and then to the 1st Baptist with my Grandma on Sundays. I never had time to go to any other church. I guess I did have my Saturdays open, I'm a slacker.
  7. This photo I found in my yearbook, It was spread over two pages thats what is wrong with the middle.
  8. I found this one in the back of my high school year book, it had sponsors names typed all over it so it took awhile to clean it up. Its a closer view of the sign.
  9. I have three papers that I have saved over the years, I use to have more but as many times as I have moved these three are all thats left. One that my dad had saved from the day after Kennedy was shot 1963 the Post and two, the Post and the Cronicle from the day after the first space shuttle disaster 1986, I also scanned some pictures from the back pages of my high school year books. What would be cool is if someone could find a old yellow pages from the 70's and post some ads with the exact locations of stores and restaurants, so we are not guessing. someone has a uncle or a aunt or even grandparent that is a packrat like me and is using one for a doorstop or just has it put away in there attic.
  10. Maybe you can remember this from 1963 I know I am not the only one with old news papers and a scanner
  11. gnu I think your right about Peppermint Parks location, I know Lutheran High School was located northside of Woodridge and on the frontage road eastside of I45, there is a shopping strip in its place now, and Woodridge I think vears to the right before it gets to Rustic, at Rustic and Garland is where I went to Mount Olive Elementry. Not sure if the Elementry school is still there, it is on Google Earth but those photos are years old.
  12. The only one I can remember that hasn't been metioned is: Rice Food Mart it was at the north end of the Globe store across woodridge from Gulfgate. Back then the grocery store had two long metal wheel tracks that when you bought your groceries they would paper bag them stick them in a plastic crate and give them a push and they would roll outside and the attendent would put them in your car when you pulled up to the building. When I was 10 or 11 my friends and I would cross the parking lot, find a wooden board and ride the tracks on sundays when they were closed.
  13. I grew up across woodridge from Gulfgate, in some apartments called Gulfgate Village Apartments in front of Globe. Some of the things I barely remember are: I couldn't wait for the carnival that would set up every year in the Gulfgate parking lot eastside near I45 The pony rides with the old man in the overalls, I think the ponies were trained to stop so kids would ask to go again on the medium track. I could of swore that Peppermint Park was located on woodridge when leaving Gulfgate and going under I45, I thought it was on the right hand side, there was a Lutheran High School on the left, but I did not drive back then I was to busy bouncing around in the back seat (nobody knew what seat belts where back then) so I could be wrong about that. They use to have Superslides that were three or four stories tall and you got a potato sack to sit on, there were two huge bumps that if you pushed off at the top you could actually get airborne for a couple of feet. Twice I remember one of the car lots off of I45 at woodridge were giving Helicopter rides, they just took you up made a big circle and then landed, but it was still cool. And I remember the pool with the high dive, my mom never would let me go off the top platform, I think thats why we quit going there, as I got older I keep getting a little more courage up, the last time I was there i was probably 8 or 9.
  14. That was a Globe store across Woodridge from Gulfgate, the front of the store wasn't facing woodridge, which was south of the store, it faced east. I lived in the apartments across the parking lot from the front of the building, Gulfgate Village Apartments for about 17 years.
  15. Wow I just found this site yesterday, this is cool talking to people that grew up around the same time and around the same place. I lived in the Gulfgate Village apartments right in front of the Globe store across Woodridge from Gulfgate from 61' - 78'. y'all have brought back so many good memories (whats left of them). I do remember the skating rink near telephone and 610 but only went there once. Will try to check for new post daily.
