  1. I went over there on Friday night (by bicycle) and there was a uniformed security guard out front. I would think they probably have someone there all the time - maybe they were busy at the back of the store? I doubt the management will put up with panhandlers in the parking lot.
  2. If there's enough support and organization, it's possible to run a theater like this as a non-profit. Here's an example from Ann Arbor, MI. Check out the history page if you want to see how close it came to being destroyed. I think most of the current revenue comes from memberships and sposorships, as well as ticket sales. It's a stunning place, and it took years to restore it to its former glory, but it's the best place in town to see a movie. It anchors the "State Street" area of Ann Arbor - the Border's #1 store is across the street, and an American Apparel opened up next to it last year.
  3. Well, I hate it when I have a hockey game and all these people who are buying stuff have taken up all the spots next to the rink. Hauling my gear across a mile of pavement in the summer is no fun at all.
  4. I'm a researcher at UT Health Sciences, and we're still in the process of recovering from Allison. There's definitely a space crunch right now, but the replacement research facility is coming along and should be ready in a few months. That will help a lot. Otherwise, the med school building is rather, um, dated looking (gotta love the 70s paint and wall decorations!) but is certainly functional. And it is now much better protected in case of flooding. The other issue the med students (and the faculty) are currently all worked up about is the possible closing of the fitness center in the building. Apparently administration attempts to close the thing every 3 years or so, but thus far it's stayed open. Baylor's new research building (Alkek) is certainly much newer, nicer, and cooler than the med school here, but I don't know where the med school classes are at Baylor. They might be in the older buildings, like Cullen. I can't tell you a whole lot about the teaching hospital differences, but I think that a degree from Baylor probably has a little more prestige. However, that certainly isn't everything - you need to find the program you're going to fit in with the best. Also, I take it you haven't applied yet? Why not try for both, then if you get interviews at both schools you will get a much better feel for the strengths and weaknesses of each. (I realize applying to multiple schools gets expensive). You will get the chance to talk to current students and see for yourself what's going on. And finally, might St. Thomas have a list of alumni currently in med school at Baylor or UTHSC? I'm sure you could get in touch with them and they could help you out.
  5. Just so you all know, McCain's is only open until 7 on weeknights. Not 8. Which I discovered at 7:10 this evening. It's too bad, I wanted to pick up some nice fish to grill for dinner. I ended up with a lousy Subway sandwhich instead.
  6. If you want some perspective from someone who DOESN'T get catered lunches at the office.... I work at 6431 Fannin, and walked out on Fannin last week to try and grab some lunch. I found that I had to walk past the University intersection to find a take out place - there is a subway, a Chipotle, and a starbucks on that corner. All three of them were absolutely packed - lines out the door. I was pretty surprised there weren't more restaurants further north on Fannin. The only other options I can walk to in a reasonable amount of time are the med center commons and the hospital cafeteria. There's some kind of sandwich place going in across from the northbound memorial hermann/houston zoo red line stop, and that's it. Plenty of construction right around there, however, so if there's ground level space available soon I think an eatery would do pretty well.
