  1. I know lots of Po Folk who will shop at Whole Foods. They want organic or whole wheat or whatever... Anyway, lots of RO people would come to that center, not to mention all the downtowners and midtowners who are sick of dealing with the heavy West U crowd traffic at the other location. We know you're just a cynic, Coog (esp about the Heights).
  2. The Shiloh Club on Studewood. $1.25 ice cold beers and that ain't Happy Hour. Best Bar to get in a fight with 21 year olds who think they own the pool tables: Cecil's Best Bar to get kicked out of: The Shadow bar downtown. Don't even begin to ask why I was there or why, at 33, I am getting kicked out of clubs. Best Place to get a bowl-of-melted-cheese-disguised-as-a-meal: The Black Lab
  3. The one on San Felipe is kind of a hybrid, wouldn't you say? Some food but not a full grocery department... Not that Target and Whole Foods even sell the same thing. People would shop at Target for convenience and price. People shop at Whole Foods for.... principle (I don't know if that's the right word, but it's definitely not price). I heard the rumor Saturday from a woman who lives in The Heights. She works in the liqur biz, which is only peripherally related but I thought it carried more weight than someone who works at, say, an IT recruiting firm like I do...
  4. Can anyone here confirm or deny the rumor of a Whole Foods going in??
  5. Just wanted to rave a little about McCain's for anyone who hasn't been in yet. Their selection isn't the greatest, but the prices are amazing. Buddy's Organic chicken is less per lb than CM (which is, in turn, less than Kroger or Randall's). Also, a girlfriend of mine called and ordered a pound of fresh shrimp from them last week. They peeled and deveined it for her and it was still less than the frozen bag shrimp at Kroger. It was even less than Airline. In this thread, we talked about shopping there for convenience even if it was more expensive. Well, seems like even those who may not want to pay for the shorter drive will have a reason to stop by McCain's. I also bought some nice balsamic and some cheese there. I do wish they would expend their cheese selection and get some fresh veggies in!
  6. I am thrilled for Chloe and Houston! I heard she plans on keeping Lot 8 open and staying here. I wish her so much success! She deserves it.
  7. I scanned this thread quickly, so I am not sure if anyone said this BUT it really depends on what kind of pizza you like. I am from the northeast and grew up on a certain kind of pizza. My husband is from S Texas and likes a different kind. He loves STAR PIZZA. I can tolerate it, but would rather have New York Pizzeria. I think it's the best in town (for my tastes). We both enjoy Cadelari's and it's BYOB!!
  8. I HAVE to go to Target. The area it's being built is mostly warehouses. I am happy to not have to deal with Galleria traffic anymore.
  9. I think the story is amazing. Hopefully, it will inspire others in the real estate and development business. Not only will the owner have a beautiful home and Allegro have a heightened reputation, but they will also have a whole community thanking them!
  10. Pretty close but I do love her style and I think she'll be in the Top 3, at the least!
  11. 1. Any place that would characterize itself that way isn't really what it's saying it is. That being said, you're going to want to hit The Davenport on Richmond. It's a martini lounge type, decor a la Urban Outfitters. Drinks are good and it gets pretty packed with a variety of people. 2. Next to the Davenport, there is a club called Indigo. I don't go to clubs, but it has a lot of trendy looking people going in and out... 3. This question is obnoxious and doesn't deserve a response. Downtown Houston has a lot of everything. I don't know where you're coming from, but don't expect NYC. We're getting there, but we're not there yet. Downtown you'll find a little of everything. Start at Warren's, go to the bar at Hotel Icon, and then just wander around and see what you find...
  12. This show has been my guilty pleasure since it's 1st season last year. We had a Houstonian on last season as well- Vanessa Riley. She looked to have a lot of promise at the beginning of the show, btu quickly became the b!tch of the show. We can all thank Chloe for redeeming us! She is a very strong contender who may help the rest of the country understand that Houston is metropolitan AND COSMOPOLITAN.
  13. We've been to Bamboo House as well. I definitely recommend it!
  14. There is another little place opening up at 11th and Shepherd called Dragon Bowl. Looks like Chinese fast food, which may seem cheesy at 1st but is something Houston lacks that most people in other cities live on. I think that's the perfect location for those kinds of restaurants. I don't care what anyone says- I'd be devistated in Popeye's ever left the Heights! :-)
  15. I agree about the prepared foods. While the selection of oils and vinegars is great, I only need to buy those items every so often. I would love to see them do some cold, prepared salads- the kind of things I want to grab on the way home from work... Too many people go to a restaurant when it 1st opens, get angry and never go back. Nice to know there are some people out there who understand the growing pains of a new place
  16. McCain's Market has a small coffee bar. They also have a small selection of pastries. Like anywhere, I'm sure if they do well they will expand their offerings!
  17. Thai Spice is open. Went to Colina's Friday night and Thai Spice was packed. Also, have any of you been to McCains Market yet? FYI- their Buddy's Organic Chicken is actually cheaper then Kroger!
  18. Really? It would make me want to gouge my eardrums with a Bic. I can't believe he is 40-something...
  19. Geesh. This is too bad. I was there a couple of times when they first opened (which was about 4 or 5 months ago). The service was a little slow due to being understaffed, but the servers were nice and accomodating. It's a shame that it's gotten worse rather than better. I have to wonder if they weren't busy enough to keep good servers there (read- not enough money) and have had to settle for what they have now. I like going to Onion Creek, but have never found them to be the beer-and-a-smile types there either. I just don't worry about it since it's counter service.
  20. No kidding! 8 pm is big time for our lovely neck of the woods! I think I'll swing by after work today. Maybe if they get enough business (and feedback) they'll add some Sunday hours. Lots of places on 19th are now open 7 days!
  21. Hubby and I went by on a little stroll today. Rock of Ages sells... wait for it.... wait for it... heastones. Yup. As far as McCain's, it's looking very cute inside. There was a slogan... something like "Buy Fresh... Go Local." Sounds appealing to me... The market takes about 1/2 the building. There is still a spot for lease between the market and the headstone shop.
  22. I agree about the hours thing. My hubby and I like to get an ice cream after dinner. Heck- we don't even get home from work until after 6... Again, I totally agree. Of course, now that it's opening, all of us talking about it need to be committed to going there, even if the sopresatta is $.50/lb more than CM.
  23. So funny... I drove by there today and there is something going in to one of the spaces. I think it's going to be a coffee shop b/c they have those Italian coffee flavor bottles showing in the window. Interesting... Well, we all need to make sure we stop by and sample their wares. Maybe whatever it is will stick around...
