  1. I am totally jealous of this photographer. Anyone want to loan me a helicopter?
  2. Well, I know that soccer is a new sport in the world, but I think it might work out. Personally, what this new sport needs is some kind of global competition, like a World Series. They could have it every couple of years in a different city each time, like the Olympics. I've heard that soccer is popular in some other countries, maybe even Spanish speaking ones. If only Houston had more of an international flavor... I think I read somewhere that this team won their "MLS Championship" twice. I'm not sure what that means, though.
  3. Here's the set. http://www.flickr.com/photos/irees/sets/72157629974731513 Some excerpts. You walk up to it like any other building. Untitled by wools, on Flickr
  4. The East side has very good skyline views.
  5. My friends and I took a bunch of pics from all over the stadium. I'm busy for a while but I'll post later this evening.
  6. I might be going to the May 5th practice game. I will post lots of pics.
  7. So, I was just sitting in my front yard and watched as a bum urinated on my neighbor's fence across the street. Just openly, in daylight, like no one was watching. Should I call HPD when this happens? Very frustrating.
  8. Another good example would be Shinjuku in Tokyo. If it's an entire district, and it's an organic and natural part of a city, these lights can work. Otherwise, not really.
  9. Screen Shot 2012-04-28 at 3.35.32 PM by wools, on Flickr Features: Pedestrian friendly 10-lane boulevard with 3 medians. Modeled after Las Vegas Blvd., long known as one of the most pedestrian oriented streets in America. 1.5-mile long "Generation Park Lake" retention pond. Forested-setback "R&D district" to, uh, "keep innovation and trade secrets protected."
  10. Uhmm, all the businesses are in the west side. The east side is mostly residential and does need more retail.
  11. I read the entire master plan a week or so ago. Polk is a key thoroughfare and one of the few links that GRB doesn't already block. They discuss that they can't close it, and how it complicates GRB expansion by needing to go over it. (Maybe they could build an underpass.. haha.) Anyway, that part of the rendering is quite far distant future. They clearly emphasize the need for all the new hotel space to exist before they would consider another expansion.
  12. Edit: My wife told me she'd talked with the staff. The 2nd-floor showroom faces the freeway, so people stuck in traffic can peer in at the new Audis. This was inspired by the success of the new Advantage BMW dealership in Midtown.
  13. Will any of these strip centers ever be developed, or are they too expensive to buy and knock down?
  14. My wife and I are big Audi fans. They are pretty solid cars and well priced for their segment. We had an A3 and now we have a Q5. Beautiful building. Can't wait to see it.
  15. And you didn't take a picture? It'll be a few more months before I go back over there...
  16. I drove by it today. From a distance it looks OK, but up close, eh.
  17. I'm going to drop out of this conversation, because it's just going to become "your neighborhood is shit." Although I love these conversations, this thread isn't the right venue. I'll just make my point more explicit before I leave, and that is that the idea of a pure free market for real estate is a fiction. The value of a property is deeply entwined in the level of public investment made in an area. It's the real history of any city. The reason any of this dirt has value is infrastructure, and the communities around it built for decades on the back of yet more infrastructure. It's my opinion that high density uses should be clustered together to maximize infrastructure investment.
  18. No, there's no shame involved. It's just a choice I'll never understand. I don't like sitting in traffic, and I don't care how many fake gables my house has. I get bored in totally homogenized places.
  19. Yes, you've just explained how the government builds freeways. It levies a tax, gets additional funding from other agencies and other taxes, then elected officials get together and direct an agency to put together a plan, then after environmental studies and public comment periods, it's built or enlarged or whatever. Total 100% free market. I believe you.
  20. Hahaha, I'll write a reply after I finish laughing. Yes, the free market that built this 64 lane freeway. The invisible hand of the market set all the rebar and poured all the concrete. I wonder what the net tax flow from the loop to Katy is.
