  1. Edward F. Simms of Kentucky came to Houston about 1901 and made his fortune at Spindletop. In 1912 he decided to build a Mansion on his newly purchased 210 acre estate, which he called Wayside. His estate was located between Polk on the north, the original Houston Country Club Golf Course site (1908 – 1956) on the east, Yates Gulley on the west and Lawndale on the south.

  2. Overly zealous cops are at it again. Was that guy a danger to anyone? Not until the cops got involved. How many folks on a typical Houston street are carrying guns? Quite a few. We will all be in the most danger when the cops are the only ones with the guns.

Also, think about it. When you are riding the dog, it only makes sense to be packing a shooter or two. Look at what parts of town those stations tend to be in.

  3. Can someone remind me why we have a professional football team in this town. I can't seem to remember why we built a brand new stadium for a perennial bunch of losers. How many millions of dollars have been spent on the Texans since they started? and what do we get for 9 years? CRAP

  4. Anybody out there know what is going on along White Oak Bayou? The old MKT right-away has been turned into a trail. For the past few weeks they have been installing what looks like storm water drainage along the trail immediately south of the UH-downtown parking lot. They now have a large, approx 1 acre, area cleared along the right-away. Any ideas as to what is going on and who is in charge of this work?

  5. The Downtown PO was in the news yesterday on KUHF. KUHF Story

Basically it says that they want to close the place and consolidate with the North Houston facility. It all depends on getting the place sold at a good price.

I bet that there are some folks who would love to develop that area.

There was a public meeting at Rice last night. Anyone out there attend?

  6. Some years ago the Houston zoo had an interesting hippopotamus exhibit with a large pool and several regular size hippos, not the pygmy ones. Wonder why they got rid of it?

That Hippo exhibit was too old school. It was a concrete pool inside a building. The Houston Zoo has been gradually replacing all of the old school exhibits with more natural habitat enclosures. The old Rhino enclosure was more natural but still it was just a big mud hole with a couple of huts for them to go into.

I think that the new Savanna exhibit will be in the area where the old Children's section used to be.

  7. I was at the game with the Cubs the other night and I swear that there were more Chicago fans in the stands than Houston fans. The place erupted with cheers and clapping when the Cubs hit a home run.

I seems to me that the Astros did not even play baseball this year.

  8. At the same time I made the above posting, another post was made at the "Whatever Happened to the Buffalo Bayou Master Plan?" Forum which provided and answer to my question.

    Tapley Tributary

Renovation of the Tapley Tributary, located

just west of the Sabine Street Bridge, will

take place this summer. Among the slated

improvements are restoration of the turtle

pond, installation of a footbridge, and

extension of the site’s tree canopy to create

a haven for migratory birds. This project

is made possible by a $100,000 grant from

the Texas General Land Office Coastal

    Management Program and matching

funds from the Jacob & Terese Hershey

Foundation and the River Oaks Garden Club.

  9. Yeah, I think it's because people started using it for official photos (weddings, portraits, quinceneras, etc.) ... I know I shot a singing group's portrait out there, but had to do it without the tripod (security stood there and made sure I didn't use it).

I guess they figure tripod = profession. No tripod means - amateur (or semi-professional).

Geeze, What would they do if you just continue using the Tripod? Taze you. Wrestle you to the ground and throw you in cuffs? If rent-a-cops touch you they can be open to lawsuit.

  10. ...Also noticed from the webcam is that they've fenced off that green area next to the site, don't know what it is, a park? part of the bayou? In any case, its fenced off, and am wondering if anybody knows why?

I don't know what is going on behind the Wortham. The amphitheater like park area north of the theater is all scratched up. Don't know if it is connected with the Ballet building construction or what. Anyone know what might be going on?

  11. ...the glass on the rendering and here dont match up to me. looks like something different as well as the pattern is completely different. humph

I don't think that it is much different. The walls are clad with small pieces of granite which are overlain by glass. The entire outside wall is glass with the granite behind. That is difficult to render in a drawing. Depending on the light you may not even see the underlying granite between the windows.

  12. Get over it already.

Flying these days is no different than taking the bus. The "food" that was served was in so small portions and of such poor quality that it was nothing more than a diversion during the flight.

Just get me to where I want to go as fast and as cheap as possible.
