  1. I'm voting that I love it. Of course, I'm biased due to family attachment. My Grandfather worked for the Humble Oil Co from 1927 until his death in 1972. Most of that time was in Longview, TX. In 1960, he relocated to Houston at the same time they constructed their new HQ. These are photos that my Grandfather and my Dad (his son) took during that time: Photos of the Humble Bldg Constuction
  2. Has anyone considered a fundraising drive to buy the River Oaks/Alabama Theaters from Weingarten outright? These little protests/boycotts/meetings/delicate flower sessions are not doing a thing. Seems to me the only thing that Weingarten understands is money (not an unreasonable thought from a corporate standpoint). Purchasing the theaters would prevent them from being demolished. Yo, Carolyn Farb, rather than stand there and complain, get some of your fellow rich folks in River Oaks and buy the place! Put your money where your mouth is. The boycott thing ain't going to work. Watch "You've Got Mail" as an example of that.
  3. I had never seen this old photo of the shopping center. If anyone else has any photos of the River Oaks, they should post them here.
  4. There was also a Wyatt's on 43rd street & Ella. There was a Weingarten's across the street. Both closed sometime in the late 80's early 90's.
  5. Looks like they are just about to demolish the north side of the River Oaks Shopping Center. I walked around it today and saw work crews pulling up pipe and constucting a fence around the complex. For posterty, I took these photos yesterday so that we can remember it the way it was. Why they couldn't just turn the existing structure into a BN I have no idea. The River Oaks Shopping Center on August 3, 2007
  6. Thanks for the replies. What's the average rate for a condo maintence fee in Houston? The mortage calculator on sites like har.com ignore this key financial data.
  7. I was checking out har.com and found several condos in the $40-70k range at THE SUSSEX highrise on 7520 Hornwood Dr near Sharpstown mall off of 59. Does anyone know if this is a nice condo complex to live in? What about the area of town? Along the same lines, anyone have any thoughts of 2016 Main in Downtown? I'm looking for a purchase a condo but I would like to keep the price under 80k if possible. Does anyone know where I could get info on maintience fees for condos in Houston? Har does not list them. Thanks Josh
  8. Uh...that's because this is 2005 and not 1991....there is a time and a season.....
  9. You are correct they are all slides. Most if not all had not be seen in 40 years. My dad had them all in those Argus slide cubes rather than the circular Kodak machine. His slide projector broke many years ago so they were in storage since. Regretfully, I did not find about about the Nikon Ice technology until well after I scanned them in 2002. I used a Minolta Dimage slide scanner to scan them and used adobe photo shop to do auto color balence on them. It took me three hours a night for four months to scan them and do not look forward to repeating the process. Perhaps as the technology gets even better and the prices come down I will attempt to scan them again. My Dad has always been a rather cheap bastard so I was pleasently surprised when I found he used ALL color film from 1956-79. There was not one B&W slide in the bunch!
  10. Some more that my Dad took with his Argus C3 camera: Original Humble Oil Bld:
  11. My father is proud of stating that he was at the last Colt 45's game in Jeppeson stadium, the first Astros game in the Dome, the last Astro's game in the Dome and the first Astro's game in Enron field. He went to tons of games with his Dad (a friend of Hoffeinze) between 1965-72 and to this day is a season ticket holder in his retirement years. He took all the photos I've posted.
  12. I'm not sure. I figured he shot it from a plane...probabably Continental. Speaking of which, here's a photo of my grandparents departing a Continental flight back in '62:
  13. Below are a few slides that my Dad took of the construction of the Astrodome: http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/5035/6104124jm.th.jpg http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/3115/6104134zj.th.jpg http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/1955/6210097mt.th.jpg http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1613/6310012ur.th.jpg http://img283.imageshack.us/img283/2447/6310028wj.th.jpg
  14. Here are a couple of photos that my Dad shot in the early 60's:
  15. This is a wonderful site. It has maps going back to the first year. I havn't thought about the "Wagon Wheel" in years! http://www.sixflagshouston.com/
  16. Below are some slides that my Dad took just after Astroworld opened in 1968. They are of my older brothers/sisters. I was born in 1972 and visited Astroworld for the first time in 1981.
