I would hope that folks take to the streets with pitchforks and torches when and if the idea of redeveloping the Dinner Bell ever gains any traction.

Some nice brickwork is done, and they are starting to build a cinder block wall in the front:

After not much visible change for a while, when I last went to Frank's about a week ago I noticed it was finally coming along, so there's still hope. Still didn't seem to be anywhere near opening, though.

Originally posted by crockpotandgravel, April 8, 2017 in the thread for Frank's Backyard | 413 Travis St | Downtown. From Crain's last summer on Frank's Backyard at 413 Travis: Frank’s Pizza knows the key to a person’s heart is a slice of good, cheap pizza. The New York-style pizza joint at 417 Travis St. in downtown Houston will soon have an outdoor patio and bar to go along with that pie once Frank’s Backyard opens next door. General Manager Cody Hastings — also son of the owners — said he hopes Frank’s Backyard will be open and operating smoothly before 2017 hits. “We want to be up and ready with all the kinks ironed out before the Super Bowl,” Hastings said. “That whole week will be amazing for everyone in Houston.” The backyard will feature an outdoor patio in front of the bar, an indoor seating area and a second-floor screened-in patio for visitors with 35 to 45 taps. “It’s going to be beer- and bourbon-driven with a little bit of everything,” Hastings said. Although Backyard has a kitchen, Hastings said the owners didn’t want to take away from Frank’s Pizza. Hungry customers at the bar will have three kiosks where they can order pizza from next door and have it brought over. As always, when it comes to Frank’s, expect no pretenses, he said. “Frank’s is known for being cheap, fast and super casual and the bar will be the exact same way,” Hastings said. “The outdoor feel will be as much about the look and feel of having a beer and hanging out with your friends.” Although exact hours haven’t been set yet, they will likely mirror the late night hours of Frank’s Pizza, which is open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. http://houston.crains.com/article/franks-hopes-add-outdoor-patio-bar-time-super-bowl

Quite a lot of UofH students come to this area for knick knacks and I'm sure are driving the local economy here. I can see this development being really successful, especially if they have a coffee shop here. Coral Sword is usually packed full of UofH students right now so any relief in another coffee shop would be welcome for sure.

It's being reposted / reupped since the original thread and other content from me were removed. Update on the property of 5815 Gulf Fwy in the Idylwood neighborhood. This is part of the Lawndale / Wayside area of Houston, near or part of the Greater East End area. From Virtual Builder's Exchange, taken from minutes from the Houston Planning Commission meeting this week: The Houston Planning Commission on Aug. 22 granted a variance to a planned mixed-use project located southwest of downtown. The project at 5815 Gulf Freeway, west of South Wayside Drive, is called Hass Center in documents on file with the city. But it carries the moniker South Gulf Plaza in a conceptual rendering. The project would involve construction of a two-story, 24,797-square-foot retail/office building and a one-story, 16,048-square-foot retail building. According to a plat map on file with the city, the smaller retail building would include 6,000 square feet of restaurant space. Plans call for more than 239 total surface parking spaces and landscaped medians in between the two buildings. Houston-based MattressFirmhad been operating its corporate headquarters and a retail supercenter in a 54,615-square-foot building that would have to be razed from the property. A variance request dated Aug. 1, 2019, describes Houston company Doan and Associates LLC as “the developer of the subject site.” Doan and Associates, which provided the aforementioned conceptual rendering, has handled designing, planning and consulting on a range of commercial and residential developments. Houston company Century Engineering is providing engineering services for the project. It was in 2016 that Sugar Land-based Hass Holdings LLC acquired the property, which is currently valued at $4 million, according to Harris County Appraisal District records. Hass Holdings directed by Amir Hassan, who is connected to a handful of trucking and logistics businesses. The variance request was to ensure that three neighboring residential roads – Dwinnell, Harriet and Dorbrant streets – do not extend past the western boundary of the project site property. City codes does typically permit the consideration of extending any public street that presently stops at a plat boundary without a cul-de-sac. In a memo to the Planning Commission, city planning staff said, “The property owner intends plat all of the property he owns, to create an unrestricted reserve, the property will be developed as commercial, therefore allowing these streets to be extended east and/or end in a cul-de-sac would create an undue hardship by depriving the applicant of the reasonable use of the land.” City staff supported granting the variance, explaining in the memo that strict application of the code allowing extension of such streets would “make this project infeasible due to the existence of unusual physical characteristics that affect the property in question, or would create an impractical development or one otherwise contrary to sound public policy.” City staff also agreed that the streets surrounding the property – South Wayside, Sunnyland and Eskeridge streets – can adequately serve the projected traffic flow that will be produced by the new development. https://www.virtualbx.com/construction-preview/houston-office-retail-project-in-works-for-i-45-wayside-property/
