  1. Outstanding aerial pix. Lone Star Mike. Not only did I get jazzed by what HTown has become, I can see so much potential by what DT can achieve, if the development gods are willing and I live long enough to see it. in addition to the commercial and residential highrises, I would love to see a couple more parks and urban gathering places. Little by little, the parking lots are disappearing.
  2. I am a native Houstonian who moved back last year after a 20 year gig in LA. And I traveled back via I10. Yes, I was impressed and had seen the same stretch only 2 years before. I think it's great that thewest side is booming so much. Would it be even greater if the development was more evenly spread across the Greater Houston Area? Yes. BUT, I am amused that we are in a place where we can complain about the placement of said development, instead of the fact that there is any development at all!
  3. Are the numbers the underlying factor preventing a high speed transit system connecting most major TX cities? I have viewed several ideal maps connecting most major TX cities ( sorry El Paso, Lubbock etc.) and wonder why we don't take all that oil $$$ and build a world renowned transit system! I mean, to connect HTown, SA, Austin, and Big D, with College Station, Waco Temple and Killeen in the mix; I am not sure why such an endeavor isn't taking place. OK, HAIFers, bring it on. I am ready for recriminations!
  4. Thanks Strikn. Answers my questions. One more; is it unrealistic to think the Post Oak height glass ceiling will be breached any time soon?
  5. Although I drive by the Williams Tower at least once a week, I never truly appreciate it until I see aerial views of the Post Oak Galleria area. What a behemoth, especially when compared to the other towers around it. Can you all give me a not so textbook (I have read it's history) reason as to the awesome tower's purpose? What I mean is; was it supposed to be iconic and unrivaled (tallest building outside of a CBD)?, was it built to attract other businesses to create supertalls in the area?, what if any is its vacancy rate?, was it one of several similar, smaller towers to be built in the immediate area?, will any developer break the Post Oak glass ceiling in height so to speak with a future tower? Hope my questions make some sense. I have just always wondered about this iconic (one of my favorites after the BoA tower) building which seems to embody Htown's notoriety to erect monoliths amid cow pastures; which I think is one thing that makes this city unique and cool BTW. Any and all thoughts welcome.
  6. Although I love glass and metal cladding as an update, I am so glad they are keeping a sense of history with this one.

  8. Hmmm. Interesting. Now, the question becomes where would it be located? There is a great swath of land off of Hwy 6 near SL, across from the airport. Maybe off of 290 across the fwy from Fairfield? Any thoughts?
  9. As in other threads by several people, I think this fun topic has been addressed. Another supertall in Houston may be way down the road. Think about it. Any oil based energy company is not going to flout their colossal profits by erecting an iconic tower until attitudes change regarding said companies gouging the US consumer per gallon. Alternative energy companies, as was pointed out to me in other posts, wouldn't necessarily be headquartered in HTown. More than likely Austin or even SA. Banks? Ummmm, who? So what are we left with? Technology companies and medical based companies. Well, the trend for both seems to not transcend 40 or 50 storeys, and actually most corporate expansion seems to point to mid rise buildings in a giant complex of sorts. So, much to my disappointment, I don't see anything over 60 storeys in DT for at least a decade. Then we could talk about residential towers, hotel or otherwise. Again, a 30 something storey tower for that purpose seems feasible, but not so much a 50 or more storey tower. Don't mean to be a negative Nancy, just others have pointed out certain facts to me, and I tend to believe them. Having said that, I will most assuredly eat every word when a 1000+ footer is announced in a year or so.
  10. Great pix. Thanks. As much as I love the view of this tower via east and west I10, take a look at it from Eldridge Pkwy. After driving through the Addicks Reserve, it really looks spectacular (monolith like), especially at dusk with the sun shining off of it.
  11. Energy Tower, Energy Center? It all gets confusing. So the Shell Towers are complete. The fourth tower on the north side of I10 is about four storeys and maybe a fifth in the works. The energy tower on the south side of I-0 on Eldridge; first tower complete; next tower in the works?
  12. Thank you to all who contribute. I plan to visit both places this Thursday. Are there any amazing Mosques here in Houston? I took my niece to Europe last summer, and we visited the Great Mosque in Paris. All areas but the prayer room ( I am not Muslim) were open to us. They even encouraged us to take photos, especially of the interior gardens, which were spectacular. The docents, who were all women, explained so much of the architecture and art to us. A real breath of fresh air considering the picture we are painted with concerning extremism on the Islamic front.
  13. DT with blue lights like in the Memorial City area would be cool. Mix in some white lights and a couple of massive plasma moving media on the sides of the widest towers, and voila, an impressive nightscape, IMO.
  14. Thanks to everyone. My next two weekends are set! Born here, lived in LA for 20 yrs and now back to my hometown. In LA diversity was celebrated so the various (places of worship, meditation spaces, spiritual sanctuaries, etc. Holy sites sounds so pompous coming from me, but I didn't know how else to categorize what I was longing to view.) places were more visible or well known than here, which is a shame, because I feel HTown has a wonderfully diverse populace. Anyway, thanks to you all for the info. I will visit these soon. And yes, anyone know of a really elaborate Orthodox (Greek or Russian) Byzantine like cathedral I could visit? About the DT cathedral; like many, I enjoy the 3d like statues and the windows for the most part. How to make a sensational space which connotes Divinity mingling with humanity without it becoming too gaudy or too trite. That, I guess separates the masters from the dabblers of architecture. I personally enjoy detailed architecture, so yes, it is a bit cold to me as well. Too bad the builders didn't go out on a limb and combine many architectural styles to make a truly memorable cathedral.
  15. I do like the DT cathedral very much, and have toured some of the great churches in and around DT. Any ideas where I could view really awesome synagogs, mosques, non Christian temples? ( thinking of Hindu and Buddhist locations). Faith aside, I love seeing how an architect incorporates the tenants of a certain religion into the various places of worship. The structures don't necessarily have to be grand, just, memorable.
  16. Am on the cusp of purchasing the SL Baskin Robbins in which Randalls dominates that part of the strip mall. Already the Krogers across the street closed, and I dont really see more customers flocking to the existing Randalls. What is more likely to take it's place, Sprouts or Trader Joes or other? We are at the corner of Hwy 6 and Williams Trace Blvd. Already a Whole Foods and HEB within a mile radius. I was sooo hoping for an HEB, but alas, not the case. It's a very profitable store, but I am concerned if Randalls decides to pull up stakes and leave.
  17. Have been in marketing for some years now. Sigh. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Look at Coca Cola. Although they have diversified their market, the logo is pretty much the same since the 1800s. I get very skeptical when logos change, especially when they change every five years. I certainly understand marketing to a younger audience, generation wise, I mean. BUT, when it changes every couple of years, and franchisees are expected to fork over the thousands to change with the corporate vision, I am like, Red Flag!
  18. Yes, I am looking out for all of these things you all mentioned. Thank you for verification. I know that some of those dealerships were just remodeled recently, but man would I love to see them move more to the west and we create a high rise corridor Mecca! So, does anyone know if they will use the same cranes on Energy IV as are used on Energy III? And of course it's all I can do not to cause a wreck as I am counting floors while passing these towers. LoL. Same with the Briarcrest tower.
