  1. The walmart heb and lowes on westhiemer and kirkwood used to be a greenfield with a small church and a cemetery next to it.

That was the church that my grandmother (and some of my other obscure family members) attended for several years. I had relatives buried there. I still seethe when I pass that damned H-E-B.

  3. One teensy little thing though...

For those of y'all who keep mentioning underground trains, it would never work. Much of Houston was built on swampland, remember? Those floods that we get, the high water table, the silty sand underneath all the concrete, the fault line under Richmond Ave. that causes you to play out your "I'm riding a bull in the rodeo" fantasies as you bounce down it...

He was right in the article when he said that Metro's ridership is dismal. Driving around every day, (I drive for a living.) I hardly ever see a full city route bus. They just don't happen. Yes, the P&R buses get utilized, (somewhat) but that's a different kettle of fish.

  4. I'm quite a bit late to this party, but....

Why in the holy hell would anyone want to tear apart another stretch of I-45 for a park, or parking, or any other such nonsense?

With there being over 6.5 million in the greater Houston Metro area, many of them using that corridor, that would be a terrible and very costly mistake. Our traffic is borked bad enough as it is, and y'all are only asking... nigh, BEGGING for it to become much worse with an idea like this.

Or so it seems, from what I'm reading here. Would anyone care to enlighten this knuckle dragging neanderthal?

  5. I still find it to be really f***ed up that they used the bulls*** powers of eminant domain to steal the land from the owners of Spring Creek Off Road Park...... They stole thier land, and in turn, also took thier livelyhood. What a crock of s***.....

  6. I can't wait for the entire Grand Parkway to be completed. It's not like that patch of weeds is something of beauty. If you walk about a mile west of where the Grand Parkway is you can still meander in that flat, ugly wasteland if you want to for a few more years. This is Greater Houston - not the everglades. Build up and sprawl only makes that side of town look better.

To me, (and SEVERAL other people) that "patch of weeds" as you've so eloquently put it, is FAR more attractive than your idea of urban sprawl.

As for your comment about this not being the Everglades, much of Houston WAS built atop swamplands. Build up and sprawl will NOT make this area look better, it'll only serve to increase the crime, the flooding, the traffic, the light pollution, the air pollution, the heat, and I could keep going. As a native Houstonian who was raised on the west side of town, I often pine for the older days, when there was a lot less of, well, everything out here.

  7. It is simply false to say there is no one there. Take a look at Google maps, people.

Okay, here's a screenshot of Google Maps. You wanna know what I see? I see private property, being stolen by the county/state. I see farmland. I see green grass, fresh air, and peacefulness. I see no neighborhoods. I see no "people", except for the ones that are being bent over, and shown where the wild goose goes...

  8. It absolutely disgusts me. All that private farmland, gobbled up. Also, whenever the new "ring" is finished, it's gonna look like a damned bullseye from space. Greeeeaaat, that's exactly what an oil and gas powerhouse city needs, is a target on it's freakin' forehead.
