  1. When growing up in Houston my best friend's dad owned The Spanish Village Mexican Restaurant on Almeda Rd. that's been there forever. They also had one on OST at South Main. When I was 12 years old I worked there making Praline candy in the back of the restaurant overlooking a go cart track. His dad's name was Larry Pico.
  2. I lived in Houston in 1998-2001 and shopped at the Randall's on Hwy6 and 529 at least twice a week. If Randall's are gone what replaced them?
  3. Growing up in Southwest Houston (close to the intersection of South Main & OST) the best burger joint was Prince's Hamburgers. Chuck wagon had the best onion rings I ever eaten period. Man I miss those onion rings.
  4. Could it have been a Casa Cabana? I know about that time they moved into the DFW area that by the late 2000s closed down many of their locations and their buildings were pink. Casa Cabana is out of SA.

  6. In 1940 Playland Park was opened on South Main south of OST & South Main intersection. Playland Park had a race track. When I was 9 yo I watched AJ Foyt race there in the late 50s. Could be the race track your talking about.
  7. When I was a kid growing in Houston (1950-60s) there was a a hamburger joint on the corner of Bellaire Blvd. and Sella Link by the name of Price's Hamburgers that sold 19cent hamburgers does anyone on here know it's history. They were made with there own special sauce (which tasted like thousand island dressing). My family would load up like once a month and go there and buy a bag full of them.
  8. Gaido's was in Galveston before it was in Houston. The Houston restaurant was their 2nd restaurant. I think Playland Park had something to do with Gaido's deciding to open it's Houston location were it did just across the street from the park.
  9. Is the Alley theater a big deal in Houston any more? And what's it's History?
  10. Those are air-conditioning heating vents. Lots of stores had those kind of vents.
  11. I lived in Houston from April 1999 thru Oct. 2001, in the Cooperfield part of NW Houston off 290 & 6. There used to be a Japanese buffet right in front of the Willowbrook Mall. Is it still there, what's the name of the place? They had the best Sushi I've ever eaten. It was 21 bucks a person for all you could eat. Also there was fish place that was built in a boat on 1960 Capt. somethin anyone know the name of it and is it still in business? They served fried catfish.
  12. Wasn't it Del Taco that had the Encurito (sp) (a large beef burrito like thing that was smothered in nacho cheese and chilly covered with diced tomatoes)? It was big enough for a small family to eat just one. Del Taco was taken over in the DFW area by Taco Bueno which for a while didn't even change the outside signs for over a year in some locations just the menu.
  13. Sept. 1973 I started my 1st job in my chosen profession as watchmaker, that for the next 31 years I did. I went to work for Laufman Jewelers on the corner of Long Point & Wirt Rd. The strip center was on the northwest corner of that intersection. On the Wirt Rd. side of the center there was A Western Auto store that even sold furniture. On the far west end of the parking lot was a Wolco store. Also in that strip center was a Pier One outlet store. and a country western dance club. Further west on Long Point. across the street from K-Mart (north side of the street) was another Laufman Jeweler that was opened 24 hours a day and their most selling shift was graveyard. I worked there for a year and left to go to work for Bulova Watch co. in Dallas, Tx. warranty center after Laufmans filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. At Bulova I became an advanced Accutron Tech and after working there for couple years left to come back to Houston to start my own Accutron service where I serviced 57 different jewelry stores all over Houston for the next 5 years. My shop was in a converted motel to business park that was just east of Memorial City shopping center on the service road.
  14. Terry was inducted into the NA$CAR Hall of Fame today. Terry got his start at Corpus Christi Speedway and at Meyer's Speedway here in Houston in the 1970s. Congrats Terry.
  15. From the mid 50s thru the 70s the University Bicycle Shop on the 2400 block of Times Blvd.they sold new/used and fixed bicycles and lawn mowers. I bought lots of bicycle parts from those guys back in the day.
  16. There were 3 up scale ladies wear stores in the 60s Schep's on the south east corner of Kirby & University. Also on University was Craig's. & Palais Royal. Back in the 50s and 60s these stores were considered upscale stores. There also was a huge Oshman's sporting goods store. There was a Le Que pool hall on the north east corner of Times Blvd. & Kelvin Dr. in the 60s & 70s that I played at all the time, it was open 24 hours so me & my friends would go there after midnight and play till early in the morning.
  17. You mean this old race track seen on Google Earth 1944 historical view?
  18. How much money did the UofH spend on this vid? And the music Stayin Alive metal instrumental?
  19. I remember a lot of the news stands sold books back in the 60s. There used to be huge news stand in downtown Houston that in the 60s looked like a huge Barns & Nobles on the inside with people sitting around reading mags & books.
  20. Well it was, I had my cars serviced there, I spend over 4 hours of my life (seemed like years) waiting in their waiting room to pick up my 77 Plymouth Valerie Wagon, that not even Plymouth could make run. That car should have been recalled, then crushed. I didn't get out of there till after 2 in the morning. Here's a pic, not my car but one just like it.
  21. Anyone remember Handy Dan Home Improvement centers? My ex-wife and I practically lived at the one on I-10 between Blalock & Bunker Hill on the south service road. This was back in the mid 70s. They were like a Lowe's even tho a couple of their CEOs later started Home Depot in the mid 80s. Also did anyone on here get any auto repairs at Crown Automotive also on I-10 between Silber Rd. & Antone Dr. also on the south service road. It was in a strange looking 2 story building that you drove your car up to the second floor to the automotive dept. What was good about Crown was they were open 24 hours a day. This was also back in the mid 70s. I later lived in Houston from 99-01 and the building was still there but it wasn't Crown anymore.
  22. Just did a google search for the Majestic and the Metropolitan theaters of Houston and the search came up with the same photos for the 2 theaters. Is there a place that would have photos of each of these theaters that are of each theater? And what ended up in their locations once they were torn down? Also were there any other theaters in downtown Houston that were as grand as these 2 were?
  23. I remember the Lewis & Coker located at Holcombe & Greenbriar in the 60s my mom worked for a dress shop in that center I think the name was Scheps. My family left Houston in 68, I moved back in 75 to open my own watch repair service and did work for a jewelry store in that same center named Klor's and witnessed the Lewis and Coker there change into a Rice store that catered to upscale and Kosher foods.
  24. I don't remember Teen Hall what I do remember is Teen Court. Am I the only one to remember Teen Court?
  25. I believe that was the old bicycle race track. Between heat races me and my dad would walk over and catch the bike racing. The track was a high banked wooden track.
