A little more info in this Forbes article - storage, boutique hotel, and what sounds like an awesome rooftop party venue. https://www.forbes.com/sites/cynthialescalleet/2018/04/24/former-falstaff-brewery-in-galveston-taps-into-new-uses/#1bf4b7c6b133 -
Sunset Heights Park At 6000 North Main St.
native_Houstonian replied to native_Houstonian's topic in The Heights
You are correct....the gas station was only at the southern tip. I think they tore down houses on the north side to complete the station? I can't remember now. I was at the grand opening of the transit center, I do remember that! -
What was once a gas station, then a bus stop/transit station, will now, hopefully, become a park! https://www.chron.com/news/politics/houston/article/Houston-to-buy-Heights-Transit-Center-convert-it-12833013.php

I just noticed that NewQuest has the old trailer park on Airline (1 block North of Canino's) up for redevelopment too. With the redevelopment of the market and if someone were to do something here, that would really improve that part of the Heights. Almost 5 acres. $6 million. https://www.newquest.com/pdfs/2100_Airline_Dr.pdf

I'm not sure how HSPVA works today, but when I was in school, HSPVA pulled students from all over the district. You had to audition in your desired discipline in order to be accepted to the school. A student is not "zoned" to HSPVA according to their residence. I would think, that once complete, maybe, maybe 2-3% of the students that attend the school will actually live downtown.
-
I still find it baffling that HISD spent tax payer money on an entire downtown block for HSPVA. They could have purchased a block on the near East side for a fraction of the cost and still had great accessibility via the train to downtown.

I'm not crazy about the design, but anything is better than the old car wash! Waiting for this intersection to take off - waiting to see what will go in on the vacant lot across the street and what will happen to the old shopping center on the other side of Studewood. Wonder how long DaVita Dialysis and Sola Salon will be there?- 41 replies

Well, there was an Exxon station on that property for many years. I'm sure remediation will add a pretty penny to the development cost.- 41 replies

Incarnate Word Academy At 609 Crawford St.
native_Houstonian replied to Houston19514's topic in Downtown
Everyone take a deep breath! The first choice was to renovate the Clayton building. The architects came back with a plan to include 4 classrooms and some office space. That was the best they could do with the interior of the existing building. It simply did not meet the current and future needs of the school. Check out the plan for the new building: https://uploads.strikinglycdn.com/files/e3bb2996-8287-4384-9142-b16390aec3a8/Campus Map.pdf -

Incarnate Word Academy At 609 Crawford St.
native_Houstonian replied to Houston19514's topic in Downtown
I'm an alumna of Incarnate Word and attended the "Farewell" party for the building on Saturday. When I was in school there in the late 80s, the building was home to approximately 5 sisters. The last 2 sisters vacated the building sometime last year. Prior to my time at the academy, the building was used for classrooms. However the inside had been reconfigured so many times in the past century, that there was nothing left from the original architecture. Last fall, we were supposed to have a special dinner in the building for alumnae, but it was cancelled due to the lack of structural integrity of the building. They said the floor was too uneven, and they were afraid someone would fall. According to Sr. Lauren Beck, the mosaic tiles on the building will be saved and incorporated into a sign on the existing building. I, for one, am all for the construction of a new building there. We have to remember that the school is not there to serve the past, but to educate and serve current and future students. That is their mission. -
