  1. My mother attended Kindergarten there, I believe, before she went to St. Vincent's. That would have been about '40 or '41. I know that my uncles would serve as alter boys for some of the Masses for the Sisters. I had the opportunity to attend Midnight Mass there in about '80 or so, before the convent moved to Bradford St. I thought that chapel was one of the prettiest in the city.
  2. This is great news! As a nearby resident, this mall has been in need of renovation for many years. The last time I went to Northwest Mall was about 6 months ago, and I just ran into Macys. As far as actually stepping foot into the actual mall - I can't even remember the last time.
  3. Passed by this site yesterday, and noticed some kind of construction going on. Does anyone know what's up?
  4. One of the places that I'm always amazed that many Houstonians have never been to, is Canino's and the produce market on Airline drive. It's a great way to spend a Saturday morning. One of the best bakeries in town, El Bollio, is across the street from Canino's. Pick up a sweet roll and a cup of coffee, and you can stroll the market for a couple of hours, picking up cheap produce for Saturday night's dinner.
  5. I probably spend about 15-20 weekends a year in Galveston. Best friend has a home in Galveston. I love the island. Have you ever been North of Broadway, around 35th street? Great little Mexican restaurant back in there, however, not much else. Plenty of undeveloped land for new housing/ apartments for those who would be employed with the jobs created by the casinos.
  6. Why would casinos along the seawall be so bad? Have you ever been to Biloxi, Miss? Next to the historical homes on the beach were beautiful casinos, including Beau Rivage, which rivaled anything in Vegas. Of course, thanks to Katrina, many of the homes of have been destroyed, but a few of the casinos have reopened. I'm sure that the casinos in Biloxi will be one of the main reasons that area of the Gulf will be rebuilt. However, casinos along Harborside would be a welcome addition as well. The cruise tourists would go right past them on the way to the terminal. It would be nice to have hotels/casinos along Harborside. Train station is right there. People could leave downtown Houston after work, jump on the proposed commuter rail between Galveston/Houston, spend the evening in Galveston at the casino, play a little blackjack, have dinner, hop back on the train and go home. I would love that!
  7. I'm all for legalizing casino gaming in Texas. I enjoy going to casinos, and would love to be able to drive to Galveston whenever I felt like playing a little blackjack. The Lake Charles, Louisiana gaming areas customer base is 95% Texan. I think we should keep our $ in our own state.
  8. I haven't gone to The Hideout this year, but I went last year. I believe that it is opened before, during, and after the rodeo, but it probably doesn't get crowded until after the show. If you get the opportunity to go, do so. It's a little surreal to stand on the floor of the Dome and look up at the rainbow colored seats and think about all the athletes over the years who have had the same vantage point.
  9. Ok, since we never spent a lot of time in Galveston when I was a child, I only have 1 memory of the Galvez Mall. We were spending the weekend at our parent's friend home on Tiki Island, and with our luck, it was raining. My mother asked my brother to take me to a movie at the Galvez Mall. What did my brother take me to see while we were at the beach? Jaws. I want to say it was the original Jaws movie, which would have been the summer of '75, but, I would have only been 5 years old. Even my brother wouldn't have done that to me. It must have been Jaws 2 in the summer of '78. I would have been 8 years old. I didn't want to step foot in the water the rest of the weekend.
  10. No, unfortunatley, I didn't have my camera with me. I plan on going back in the spring. If I do, I'll post pics then.
  11. Just got back from a weekend in Vegas (no, no one ask for a loan, I left it all there)! Anyway, went to see what Tillman had done to the Golden Nugget, located downtown Vegas. I have to say that they have done a nice job in giving the old girl a bit of a face lift. He has added a beautiful new porte cochere at one entrance, and has dressed up the interior a bit. However, the best addition has to be the new Aquarium that sits over the pool area. The 3 story water slide goes through the aquarium. Very cool. And, of course, most of his restaurants are included on the site. I know there is a Vic and Anthony's and a Grotto that are new since the last time a visited.
  12. Maybe we should have another "Mixer" at Warren's one evening.
  13. Oh my gosh! It is a small world!! I would have been on the show probably sometime between 1976 and 1978. I probably did 5-6 performances total.
  14. I don't think that relief pitching is the Astros main problem. We need a good bat or two. If our guys can "step up to the plate" so to speak, or trade for a bat, we can make another run for the WS.
  15. Quite a vague post, don't you think sttombiz? Well, guessing from your screen name, you are somehow connected to UST. As a graduate, I greatly value the solid, Catholic education that I received there. Greatest school? Probably not. A great institute in the city of Houston - definitely. On an architectural note, I am very pleased with the completion of the mall and the new garage and dorms that have been built since I left. Not to show my age, but I was there when Hamburgers by Gourmet occupied the corner of Yoakum and West Alabama! Yikes!
  16. Ok, I heard it too, and I live near 43rd and Antoine.
  17. One of my friend's father was a manager at this Weingarten's in the 70's. He told me stories about the basement. He said they had the biggest sewer rats down there that anyone had ever seen. Maybe that's why they closed the store.
  18. I do not consider this new building a waste of money. This new building will give the girls that attend IWA a new auditorium, new classrooms, new labs (computer and science). It will help the young women that attend IWA become better prepared to become productive citizens. You may not agree with the architecture of the the structure, but it will be a building put to good use. As far as the convent on Bissonnet and the Loop, I was extremely sad to see them sell that property. I was only about 12 when the convent was moved to it's current location on Bradford next to St. Vincent de Paul's Catholic Church. The chapel at the convent on Bissonnet was absolutely gorgeous. However, the property was no longer practical for their use. The Sisters, as a community, are growing older, and could not keep up the facility on Bissonnet, which is one of the reasons it was sold. Also, with diminishing numbers, they did not need that large of a facility. With that money, they built the convent on Bradford, and I'm sure are paying for their day to day living, you know medical care, food, etc. While you may not agree with the style of building they have chosen, it will be used to send many young women into the world with a top notch education.
  19. From Ms. Nancy Sarnoff's column in Sunday's Houston Chronicle: Updating shopping center The new owners of an aging shopping center in Oak Forest are demolishing the property and building a newer one to better suit the image of this up-and-coming area. Wellington Development Co. bought the property at the northwest corner of Ella and 34th earlier this year and has signed letters of intent with retailers to fill about half of the space.
