  1. The Laura Hotel, Autograph Collection by Marriott. The valet says they’ve been open for two weeks- not sure how we missed this one.

  3. Wow. This could be the perfect motto for HAIF. "Not regular people. Architecture enthusiasts. But still, people."

  9. As homeless camps around Houston are 'decommissioned,' other U.S. cities look to copy the strategy

  12. I enjoyed this article. I'm glad that they are approaching this process with compassion, as opposed to just trashing people's stuff and chasing them off. I think it is more sustainable to give people that helping hand, hopefully send them on a better path. The encampment on the northeast of downtown has gotten pretty big (under 59/69), I wonder if/when they are going to try to 'decommission' that one. It would be a lot of work.

  14. Perhaps Johnson's friendship and working relationship with Hines, and the fact that Gerald's world headquarters just happened to be in Houston, helped to influence the way both approached the Houston portfolio. I would think that Gerald would want to go that extra mile to do great things in his hometown. And perhaps Hines approach to development inspired Philip to push things a little farther. He definitely was Gerald Hines main guy for a number of years and Houston was the recipient of quite a few of his most successful projects. The list of projects he designed for Houston is quite long. I guess his design for the Fluor campus in Sugarland was one of his last, and certainly the most distant to downtown. Together they helped shape Uptown, and remade the Houston skyline.

  15. I think Houston probably does better on building public housing and social services facilities without a lot of NIMBYism, it has a lot of dirt cheap housing already too. Another thought is that Houston is still sort of a gritty blue collar city. There's places that will hire people with a checkered past or felonies and there's slumlords who will rent to them. Unlike in the Bay Area where you have to make a ton of money as a skilled professional and be approved by the corporations that own luxury apartment properties, just to barely get by. The people with a lot of problems don't stand a chance there.

  19. Just a passing observation about the property across the street. 3535 Sage Road has a big for sale sign advertising 8.2 acre tract of land for sale. That’s pretty big chunk of land for this area. Also just south of 3525 Sage condos. Right now there is an abandoned two story commercial bldg along with a really big ugly parking lot. Looks like plenty of development opportunities around here… keeping my fingers crossed. Need lots more lovin in this part of town!

  20. The old Amegy parking lot across the street is now closed. The surface lot west of it is still being used by people working at MTA building. I wonder what the plans are for this?

  22. After seven years, I think I was pretty much spot on. I said IH was 5-10 years away from gaining the critical mass needed to really see it turn around. Right now, development in IH is still pretty spotty with mostly entry level townhomes in the $300s popping up on random lots. Lot values are up but appreciation is not as good as the near northside/Lindale. I have a friend who bought a townhome over by Tulane in IH about 4 years ago. The neighborhood is still pretty rough. A lot of drugs and gang activity is still going on even as new construction goes up with doorbell cameras pointing at the street. Police sirens and gun shots are still a weekly occurrence. IH is right now about where Cottage Grove and Shady Acres were in the early 2000s. The pace of development is picking up but there is still a long way to go before it attracts anyone other than urban pioneers who are willing to put up with the crime, stray dogs, etc. in exchange for a close in neighborhood and an affordable townhome. I am still much more bullish on the near northside and Lindale. They are getting some restaurants, bars and coffee shops (Canary Cafe, Trash Panda, Monkey's Tail, Rabbits Got the Gun, Local Brewing, etc.). Bellissimo moved to IH. But that is really it for IH. https://www.theleadernews.com/community/woman-charged-in-fatal-independence-heights-shooting/article_f681b16c-10cf-11ec-8d9e-0b98b106c0e8.html https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/crime/article/Man-charged-in-Independence-Heights-shooting-that-16115473.php https://abcnews.go.com/US/deputy-fatally-shot-injured-ambush-houston-nightclub-police/story?id=80619451

  26. ^^^ JUST CONSTRUCT THE DAMN HOTEL ALREADY! actually, this is all that ROD needs at this all important point. everyone knows that a GREAT standout hotel brand is all that is badly needed within this particular district. (miami, new york, san fran, chicago, los ang) would have constructed their edifice by now. however, LETHARGIC ass houston seems to take forever and a day to accomplish this particular fete. GET IT DONE!

  28. I have spent a lot of time on the road in hotels. I would typically be the most likely of my colleagues to want to check out local places - most of them just wanted to get whatever was easiest and go back to their hotel. If it was an extended stay we might plan something once or twice a week. Traveling for work can be weirdly exhausting, and the novelty can very quickly get old. My wife lived at the Rice when we met. Places downtown quickly became regular haunts. Public Services (RIP). The sushi place on the ground floor of the Rice. Honeymoon/Boomtown. Pastry War. La Carafe. I was 100% in favor of more hotels downtown, but we have them now. And if that's all we get from now on, downtown will just get more touristy, generic, and boring. We need people who live there and have a stake in it. People who are willing to try a place twice or go somewhere they don't recognize.

  29. I'm thinking the combination of: Rice having more money than they know what to do with; the fact that the better the Ion District does the better it is for their school and internships/jobs they can market to the kids; the City clearly (local group limitations considered) willing to do what it takes to push this through; and that the Ion and Greentown are succeeding where office space is still heavily influenced by COVID makes me think we should both keep up our hopes. This thing can look LA/NY/BOS/ATL/CHI/TOR/SD I don't care, just get us 50-75% of the new stuff and it changes the fabric of Midtown.

  44. I have not been to the place but I have read something about it. Actually, Cabinet of Curiosities is not the only work of arts that will make you really interested to see. You will be able to explore and discover arts across time periods and cultures. I guess, there are 65,000 beautiful work of arts there.
