  2. Not sure why this one wasn't posted. This makes Phase 2 very distinct from the one we've already seen around Discovery Green.

  3. Updated Centennial plan: https://meetings.boardbook.org/Documents/WebViewer/685?file=49232765-4fe5-4cca-8ea7-97b4d2f3a4f9 Imgur link: https://imgur.com/a/xQrsu7H There's a lot but I'm gonna post the majority of it (32 pages). Also it seems there's a very heavy focus on making the campus more walkable/pleasant, and giving better first impressions with an added plaza heavy feel. Going to start with the maps. Huge focus on new pathways/greenspaces and creating gateways. There's a number of new buildings footprints included. Also shows that they plan on greatly expanding the area around the medical school. Conceptual expansion map for the UH groves they call the Woodlands Gateway Monuments: The sites for these can be seen on the first map University Drive: Addition of a more pedestrian friendly entrance to campus, huge step up imo. Also looks to be an early rendering of the Hilton expansion. Centennial Plaza: An expanded central plaza showing off the older part of campus. Looks like a huge upgrade from what's there right now. It's much needed that area always felt a little small. University Park: They're looking to completely change entrance 14, cutting the roadway length in half and adding a lot of greenspace to the area. Arts Walk: Already seen this but it's definitely a nice addition going towards the architecture building Scholars walk: A really big pedestrian addition. Also shows off the new IDEA Center (wonder what that's going to be?) and what looks like a new building by the Durga and Sushila building? Inspiration Commons: A new park going up on parking lot 19C, definitely brings the area together nicely. Also shows what looks like a placeholder for the new building next to the Durga building. With a rendering of what they call the IDEA Center next to the architecture building. You also have the new Law Center at the bottom left. 4. Good to see it is at least not being torn down or something. This train means a lot to my family. My great grandfather took many many trips on this train and served as one of its engineers. We have several photos of him working on the train itself back in the day. What was funny is that when he arrived back into Houston, he would blow a unique pattern with the horn to tell my great grandmother that he was home so she could come and pick him up.

  5. Yup, so was I. But it looks like 1 of the images in that URL that was posted would be a different design than the rest we have seen. The "stair step" skyscraper design is gone in this rendering.

  9. So Pics 4 and 5 show a tower on the empty lot they own next to One Park Place, right? It’s much clearer if you click on the link.

  10. The first image posted above is Phase 1 with Fulbright. Really like the initial drawings of the block West of Fulbright. BIG is providing a natural transition from the park experience/greenspace to the project which appears to be (at least in these drawings) an office building.

  11. I've ridden by these 2 warehouses and there is about a dozen old/antique trains already there on an old rail line that used to service the warehouses there. I took a few photos of them but there are a lot more.

  12. University of Houston receives $10 million gift for Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management By Laura Gillespie – Reporter, Houston Business Journal 6 hours ago The University of Houston Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management has received a $10 million gift from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. The gift will create an unrestricted endowment at the Hilton College and will help the college navigate Covid-19 challenges that the hospitality industry is facing, the university said. “Hilton College has become world-renowned as a leader in hospitality education and research, in no small part because of the Hilton Foundation’s philanthropy,” said UH President Renu Khator. “At every major stage of the college’s growth, the foundation has been there to support our hospitality students by funding critical facilities, programs, endowments and scholarships. On behalf of the university, I thank them for this truly remarkable gift, especially during this challenging time.” The Hilton College was started with a $1.5 million gift from hotel industry veteran Conrad Hilton in 1969. Over time, his foundation has given over $95 million to the school. The foundation has given more than $1.6 billion around the world. The college currently has 1,000 students from 54 countries, six degree programs and 30 full-time faculty members. “We are proud to have partnered with the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston, now one of the leading hospitality institutions in the country, since its inception,” said Peter Laugharn, president and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. “Through this grant, we look forward to supporting a new generation of students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, in becoming leaders in the hospitality sector.” A $30.4 million expansion and renovation of the Hilton University of Houston hotel will begin in March. The project includes a five-story guest tower, which will increase the number of rooms at the hotel to 150. “When we embarked on our strategic-planning process in 2015, the Hilton Foundation was there as well, even offering a representative to help us chart a new roadmap,” said Hilton College Dean Dennis Reynolds. “Today, as we weather this pandemic and enter our newest chapter with the expansion of our Hilton Hotel, a cutting-edge curriculum launch, a new and fully integrated Eric’s Club Center for Student Success and a bold vision for the future, the Hilton Foundation has once again made an indelible impact with this legacy gift.” The university closed its $1.2 billion "Here, We Go" campaignAug. 21, 2020. It had met the $1 billion initial goal in 2019 but continued to accept donations. The funds will create 728 endowments, 55 endowed chairs and professorships, over $215 million in scholarships and fellowships, 29 new or renovated facilities, and 12 centers and institutes. Of those funds, $559 million, or 48% of total giving, came from individuals; $380 million, or 31%, from corporations; and $255 million, or 21%, from foundations.

  13. I don't subscribe to HBJ, but I did google "houston business journal wanderstay" in a private browser window and scanned the text as quickly as I could before the paywall popped up and managed to see the address - 520 Sampson (corner of Sampson at Texas, one block south of Harrisburg); this is INCREDIBLE news for the neighborhood.

  20. I saw a rumor going around on Twitter last night about this, indicating that they planned to take their website offline at midnight. It was still up as of a couple hours past midnight but there's now a placeholder page there informing visitors of the wind-down:

  24. Tried again and with some quick ctrl-A and ctrl-C I got the full article text: By Shafaq Patel – ACBJ minority business reporter, Houston Business Journal 2 hours ago Wanderstay will open a new boutique hotel in the East Downtown area after the success of the company’s first shared-room hostel. Technically located in the East End District, Wanderstay EaDo at 520 Sampson St. will have 17 private rooms in the 6,700-square-foot space — double the size of the hostel near the Museum District, said Deidre Mathis, owner of Wanderstay. The renovations are expected to be complete by November 2021, with the anticipated opening sometime between November 2021 to January 2022. Mathis said she’s excited to open her second hospitality space and still make it affordable. The rooms will be under $100 a night. After traveling to over 40 countries on all seven continents and writing a book about it, she believes that travel should not be only for the rich. “You should be able to stay in a nice, fun, quirky, safe, clean, cozy place at an affordable price,” said Mathis, who is also part of the Houston Business Journal's 40 Under 40 Class of 2020. The hotel will be a more mature space for the young business and conference traveler, different from the company's first youthful hostel, but it will still be colorful and community-oriented, Mathis said. Wanderstay chose the Sampson Street location because it’s close to the Metro and the potential for nearby activities once events start happening again, Mathis said. She also noted that while there are large hotels and some Airbnbs in the area, she will have the first boutique hotel. She hopes to partner with local breweries and wineries and have group events on the weekend. Mathis started to look for her second location and talked to lenders in June 2020, as the pandemic was hitting its summer peak in Houston. Even though travel in general had plummeted at the time, she said she had to think about the future and how Houston normally accommodates millions of travelers a year. “Travel is one of the most resilient industries. If you look at any bad or horrible thing that's ever happened to the travel industry, it’s had a short-term effect,” Mathis said. “Of course, we haven’t seen anything like the coronavirus, but studies are showing that people have been cooped up for a year and will be ready to travel once a majority of people are vaccinated.” Like most of the hospitality industry, Wanderstay's hostel, which has been open for almost three years now, was affected by the pandemic. The occupancy rate dropped to an average of 52% from the hostel’s normal occupancy of 60% to 70%. But there was still enough business for Mathis to want to grow her company.

  27. I talked with a Trammel Crow Residential worker and asked whether the white portion was stucco or brick. It looks like stucco made to look like brick to me. He said it was actually brick using what he called the "German Smear" no paint is added, just the right mix of cement, lime, sand and water. This has to be my favorite mid rise going up right now, gorgeous. He also said leasing is ongoing now and are releasing 20 new units every 2 weeks. I asked if they were in were involved with the 42 story high rise Discovery Tower and he said they farm out high rise buildings to other contractors. https://www.bobvila.com/articles/german-smear/

  33. Depends on what you mean. I'd argue Washington and Westheimer are continuing to mature. If you mean the club scene, then it's pretty universal that that's going to move around, especially in a city that's pretty unsettled and still developing.
