  8. Of course, this won't go anywhere and the stupid storage place will get built. But it is a positive sign that Heights residents have not given up and still have some fight left in them. https://www.stopbigtexstorage.org/

  9. Hot Dang! Here we go. A curious little thing is taking place close to the center of the site, near Bayou Street. Two 20ft containers were placed side-by-side and welded together to form a 20ft x 16ft room. Large doors on the 20ft sides open-up completely so both sides can be completely open. The room is insulated, paneled, and climate controlled. Inside is a stylish little set-up, with table, chairs, couch, coffee table, etc... Conference lounge. It is not a construction trailer and there are not any Port-a-lets. I think that it must be place for Midway to bring prospective clients. The whole little set-up, is just curious and quite elaborate. It's just interesting.

  14. Looks like its rein as Texas' tallest building is on barrowed time. Really sad that a pint-sized city like Austin will soon hold the title of having the states tallest building. The amount of skyscrapers on the books for Austin is nothing short of amazing. It's like what Houston experienced 40 years ago that gave rise to the skyline we know today.

  24. I still think they should have built an apartment complex with the same number of units that existed previously and made them all low income housing. it wouldn't make as much as luxury high rise, but they would have lost less than they did by chasing the dream. hell, if I win a billion dollars tomorrow night, I might just buy the property and do it myself.

  25. From the Houston Business Journal: Michelin-starred chefs to open new restaurants at MFAH's Kinder Building Café Leonelli and Le Jardinier will open in the MFAH's new Nancy and Rich Kinder Building. Both will be led by Michelin-starred chefs: Jonathan Benno will lead Café Leonelli, and Alain Verzeroli will lead Le Jardinier. Café Leonelli will be a more relaxed, buffet-style Italian restaurant serving focaccia, pasta, polenta, entrees and more. It will use seasonal Houston ingredients, and its baked goods will be made using traditional Italian methods. Salvatore Martone, also a Michelin star recipient, is Bastion’s executive pastry chef. Le Jarrdinier will use French culinary techniques and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant will include outdoor seating and a gluten-free bakery as well as additional baked goods from Martone.

  27. Whether or not the property owner and developer were in the right, can we all just agree for once that building a multistory self-storage warehouse on top of what had been one of the last historic movie theaters on a sidewalk fronting lot in the city is just like dropping a massive wet turd and why Houston can't be nice like other cities? Call me a NIMBY if you want, but you know people do vote with their dollars and feet when it comes to where they prefer to live and work. It's why people from other cities look down on us. If Houston preserved its historic commercial buildings and streetscapes better it would have higher property values and attract the people who would pay for that.

  28. Even if you're expecting development, it's perfectly reasonable to be upset about this specific development. A storage facility is a huge waste of this spot, and, even though the old theater wasn't much to look at, it represented the potential to be reused as something good. Storage facilities are super cheap to build and maintain and provide guaranteed income with minimal future expenditures. Like surface parking lots downtown. And they're terrible. Houston does not need more storage facilities. I don't support explicit regulation of use on private land, but I do think there have to be options for the City to actively disincentivize stuff like this.

  29. There are an absurd amount of empty lots in this city that can be filled up first, then the surface lots, then the shitty stucco strip malls, then... We have so much space to add density without destroying historic structures.

  30. I emailed the Mayor. I’d encourage everyone else in this forum to do the same. Enough is enough. We need to revise the preservation ordinance ASAP before we start to see other structures destroyed.
