  1. Watch the top floor almost out of frame - windows installed in less than six hours

  2. Drove by last nite and damn this structure is going to be very imposing, in a very good way. It's massive.

  3. Good news (hopefully)... there were quite a few guys working on the office component today, or at least doing something on top of the one floor that has been constructed. I'm wondering if maybe they pushed it back to utilize one of the cranes from the residential component and that way delay completion of the office part a bit until there is more demand? We'll see.

  5. I like how the 45* angles on both new towers play off each other in this angle.

  11. Except making the street safe to walk in is literally the point of this project. This is not meant to be a permanent solution - it's more about showing what might be possible, so the City is in a better position to come in and make permanent changes further down the road. And the City will never have the budget to go through and rebuild every street at once, so if it can use faster, cheaper, temporary techniques in a way that makes a short-term difference, I think that's a lot better than doing nothing. To me, the project implementation on something like this should be phased. For example: Phase 1: the City puts up these quick, cheap, temporary barriers Phase 2: temporary barriers are replaced with quasi-permanent concrete curbing (similar to how many protected bike lanes are being handled) AND additional stop signs are installed Phase 3: Curb extensions, chicanes, lane removals, raised crossings etc are installed. Sidewalks are replaced and widened.

  13. While I agree location in that area would be great, if we want downtown to continue exploding and building denser towards Midtown, I think having an attraction like that in our core would be a bigger benefit. You would draw crowds year round to downtown which would stabilize some dry goods retail.

  14. Let me get this straight, you pay a crap ton of money for your tuition and the school turns around and ask you to bring your own chair???

  15. If Houston ever got an observation tower (like the Space Needle or better), I think the best place for it would be somewhere around where The Allen is going up near Buffalo Bayou Park or maybe near Regent Square or Hanover Square near the Bayou. That vantage point would have a nearly 360ยบ view of all of Houston's best skylines - without actually interfering with any of them (well maybe the "Montrose skyline", but that would be fine). Yes, a casual rooftop bar and grill on top, say 300-500 ft in the sky would be nice too. I'd certainly take out-of-towners there to here them rave about how wonderful Houston is.

  16. Those are certainly fair criticisms of AVP. I'm not sure Cactus' selection of arthouse films was bigger than AVP's, but it was close, and it was certainly superior in terms of active curation. The staff at Cactus' video department were huge film buffs and extremely knowledgeable about the films they stocked, something that wasn't necessarily the case at AVP. There was one guy whose name escapes me who worked at Cactus for years, and I would always see him at repertory screenings at the MFAH. That's the mark of a true cinemaniac - not only working at a video store, but spending days off at film screenings.

  17. Not to mention the poor visibility of eastbound traffic around the corner on McKinney when stopped at the northbound stop sign on Cullen.

  18. Velvet Taco is really expanding...with this new location and the one coming to Uptown (former Zone D' Erotica bldg)...they are trying to get some of Torchy's business and i guess it is working! I have to say, i used to love going to Rice Village for all the cool stores but now all of them are gone...so to ME, Rice Village has lost it's appeal in that sense.

  19. Looks like this is finally kicking off... They've closed 2 lanes on Crawford, are in the process of fencing off the entire parking lot and have construction trailers set up in the vacant lot catty-corner from the site. Cheers to another 40+ floor multi-family development in downtown!

  21. Posted in the Buffalo Bayou thread but meant to post here... well, 3 months later...still wondering if there is any update on Eastern Glades opening...rode my bike nearby and to me it looks like it is ready and the fence should come down anytime but maybe they are waiting for when they can have some kind of celebratory grand opening? anyone know? i am just excited about having something similar to Discovery Green open close to me or at least hope it kind of turns into that... and in turn i wonder if they will close the bike loop/picnic loop to use that for another purpose (i think it would be cool to turn that whole area into a bike park with the loop but then ramps and a course within the loop) or at least give it some revamping as it seriously needs some tlc, especially as far as the seating/tables go.

  24. The removal of the cloverleaf at Memorial/Waugh is currently listed for year 2042 in H-GAC planning documents. It is not listed in the current 4-year or 10-year plans. See appendix D of the 2045 MTP (it should be somewhere on the H-GAC site, I have a saved copy). With its super-high price tag of $224 million for the overall project (although cloverleaf removal is surely only a small part of the total), I would rate this project as speculative depending on future financial conditions. 18142 Harris Waugh/Heights From IH 10 to NEVADA/BOMAR RECONSTRUCT AND REALIGN WITH SINGLE POINT URBAN INTERCHANGE AT MEMORIAL DRIVE, BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN IMPROVEMENTS, SIGNAL IMPROVEMENTS IMPROVED TRANSIT STOPS AND DETENTION PONDS. 2042 $223.59
