  1. I have enjoyed all of the detailed renderings, and all of the announcements, but I'm more anxious to see some boots on the ground. Actions speak louder than renderings. So on with the show. Please.

  2. cool. these renderings sure have a "space city" feel to them, which I think makes sense and it's something different than most of what we've seen being developed lately around town. thanks for the screen shots !

  5. I took a paper copy of the presentation, I’ll see what I can upload tomorrow. He said it’s primarily masonry, all brick and granite. The inspirations are “Mediterranean revival” and “Hollywood Regency.” And it’s being called Boone Manor (at least on the slides it was) which I think is cool AF. He referenced Hotel Zaza as an influence for their team at the meet and greet afterwards. For real, it was a 45 min presentation, and he maybe spent 20 mins of it on the actual building and the rest answering questions or letting them know what infrastructure they’ll be putting in, which includes: 1. sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and new parallel parking on all sides (I asked the presenter the width of the the sidewalks and he said they’ll be pushing for near 8 feet.). If you know that area, people parallel park in small ditches currently, so, big upgrade. 2. Replacing the generic street lights they are taking down with the lights you see by the jogging path in Hermann park. If they do that, he said Centerpoint might force them to do it for more than just their block, on both Crawford and La Branch. Thus, from Binz to Oakdale on those streets. 3. Upgrading at least one esplanade in the area, more if the museum people will come up with a design and the developer can just contribute and help develop other esplanades. Scored huge points with the head of Museum Association. 4. Burying power lines and utilities around the property. Scored huge points with crowd. 5. He spent 10 mins talking about trees and how they have some nice tree coming in, if they can’t save the current ones. Again, big point scoring. 6. After the presentation, quite a few people mentioned they would pay for access to the pool and fitness center since there isn’t one in the area. Presenter said it’s actually an idea that is being kicked around. I think all of those things are just so no one shows up for their variance meeting, lol.

  9. Honestly I'm seeing a lot of duplicated architecture, seems to me like they are mostly placeholders to fill in the surrounding context. I would guess these parcels haven't been thoroughly developed/ designed yet.

  10. One of my big hopes is that someday they will reconstruct that crazy intersection of 20th, Cavalcade, N Main, and Studewood into an awesome big roundabout, and maybe with a cool art installation or monument. One can dream though, right?

  12. The developers are looking to break ground in Q4. project looks good - seems like no stucco will be used. Unfortunately, no GFR. The cafe on their ground floor is for residents only. They would consider leasing it out a 3rd party if/when parking code is changed. As of now, they wouldn’t be able to build the additional parking the code calls for.

  13. I head once that zoning in Austin pretty much limits towers to only downtown so that's a big factor. 700 Louisiana was in Simcity 3000 you betcha it's an iconic tower! Edit: was able to find this Tried my darndest to find an image of it from the game but you can see it listed here.

  14. Didn't see this posted anywhere else. http://www.bizjourna...m-ben-taub.html "The Harris County Hospital District is finally renovating the original Ben Taub General Hospital, a $38 million plan that’s been on the drawing board for nearly 20 years. The 50-year-old hospital has been sitting vacant since 1992, when the existing Ben Taub General Hospital opened its doors. “The plan at the time was to renovate the original hospital then and have two hospitals up and running, but the hospital district ran into some financial difficulties in the late 1990s, and we had to put it off,” said George Masi, executive vice president and COO of the Harris County Hospital District." I couldn't access anymore of the story as I don't have a subscription.

  15. Associated Press The University of Texas Health Science Center has received $5 million for cardiovascular stem cell research, the institution announced today. The gift will be split evenly between the health science center and the Texas Heart Institute to establish stem cell research endowments. Dr. James T. Willerson, president of the health science center, said the gift would help broaden basic stem cell research as well as develop treatment efforts for patients with coronary artery disease and severe heart failure. UT-Houston received a separate $25 million gift for stem cell research last year, making it the state's leader in that research field. UT-Houston is the only institution at the Texas Medical Center working with stem cells derived from human embryos from the existing cell lines approved by the federal government. Stem cells, which can come from adults and donated embryos, could potentially be used to repair spinal cord injuries and reverse effects of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. But research involving destruction of human embryos has generated heated debate over possibilities of stellar medical breakthroughs versus immoral or unethical sacrifice of embryos for studies that may or may not produce results. In 2001, President Bush restricted use of federal money on embryonic stem cell research to existing lines. Privately funded research is ongoing. Willerson and Dr. Emerson Perin, director of new interventional cardiovascular technology at the Texas Heart Institute, lead one of the first FDA-approved clinical trials to treat end-stage heart disease patients using stem cells derived from their own bone marrow. "Through our investigations, we hope to make a significant contribution in the battle to transform the future of medicine and to prevent and conquer cardiovascular disease," Willerson said. Link

  17. NYC F.A.O. is definitely as much a tourist attraction as it is a retail outlet. I think what a revived Toys R Us needs to avoid is competing with on-line stores (perhaps even itself) and focus on the new and unusual in its brick-and-mortar stores. People will want to "test drive" innovative products and buy them if they like them. This may have been what made Sharper Image an initial success. Are there any of those stores still around?

  18. Agreed. At 1100 Louisiana, they are sprucing up the lobby and adding a gym, secure bike area, and dry cleaner, all in the former Massa's space across the street for all the tenants to use for free (not the dry cleaning obviously). I just wish they had this 15 years ago!

  21. Great update. Don't forget about these guys working on the project: Glad this got started. While hiking around the entire neighborhood, I reached Airline Dr, and saw nothing but potential. This area has a lot of opportunities to really take off at some point.

  23. I miss F.A.O Schwartz here in Houston...I would go there often (in the Grand Lux Cafe space on Westheimer)... However while I wish they would have a big new and improved Flagship store like F.A.O in New York here in Houston...this new store will be relatively small prototype stores that they claim will be a "new kind of toy store"... only time will tell........ (and will add...of course the NYC F.A.O was packed as it's in the heart of everything that is NYC...plus it's an iconic landmark and the site of the awesomeness that is the movie BIG! although i will bet most people go in there not to shop but to look around and experience the wonder of it all...that is, until Christmas time when I am sure there are tons of actual shoppers.)

  26. Or just " the warehouse district" would fit better. Then again, remember these are marketing terms. The Alexan on Weslayan is now "Alexan River Oaks" when its several blocks away from River Oaks, and not even in River Oaks proper. I would never describe that intersection of W Alabama and Weslayan as being anything like "River Oaks", but thats the association the developers and their marketing team want to make. Thats completely fine, but thats with the understanding that its a "business" decision rather than a "cultural/neighborhood" decision.

  31. Post Reroute + North Canal will make this entire area a boom town. I'm calling it. With UHD next door, proximity to downtown, and light rail it would be really fun if this became a kind of student village. Education with a dash of artsy. EDIT: Keeping this as "proposed" as blue on the map until its confirmed to be a renovation which will then be light purple. I have a hunch that the part of the building further north might get torn down to make room for a garage.

  32. Their website's list of core values begins with "Embrace History." They are based out of a historic house on Avondale Street. I think we should be okay. This is going to overlook the North Canal if/when it gets built.

  33. I know I'm gonna get a lot of comments like "anything is better than nothing," but I really do wish this gets put on hold until something better comes along. This is literally one of the most visible part of Downtown Houston, especially coming from I-10/45/59. I respect everyone's opinion but wow....this "Redevelopment" is not it. The inside looks like an 80s mall and the outside looks.....the same. They threw on some grass and some bushes and called it a rooftop park, don't get me wrong I LOVE that idea, but they did NOT execute it AT ALL. Pictures for what it should have looked like. Also, I LOVE Houston sooo much, thats why I get so frustrated about this project, because we deserve better!

  34. I saw this story, these new rules have me very worried for our neighbors in the north. We've always joked about Austin being "New California", but it seems as though they are failing to learn from homeless situations on the west coast.

  35. This is a little selfish of me but I guess the flower districts days are numbered.... and I wish they weren't but I know the city is changing. I love going to Rosewood Flowers because the prices are so good there and I guess it has a special place in my heart since I was going to these flower places so often after my mom had her stroke (hospitalized frequently) but I guess things can't last forever... especially in that area. I know the flower places aren't going away now, but once these type of developments go in, they can only afford so much in higher property taxes.
