  1. As I have said several times , I think that Ziegler Cooper has done an excellent job of marrying the contemporary glazing and upper level design with the historic base in such a fluid way and the way they have addressed the buildings relationship to Market Square will completely change the feel of this whole;e neighborhood. When it comes alive with people there will be an electricity down here. I can't wait for it to open.

  2. Not that there's much to add, but the entire metro LA area is well over 2X the amount of people than Houston and the state of California didn't even begin the entire Cal State system (along with Irvine, Riverside and others) until the early 1960s. Also, the California public educational system wasn't created as a cabal to over fund 2 universities at the expense of all the other public state colleges and schools like what happened in TX. I have no doubt the UH contingent and Khator would have been fully supportive of a new UT-Houston branch if UT and A&M and the lawmakers of the state revised the constitution and opened up the PUF to fund all the top R1 schools in the state equally rather than allow UT to open a campus in Houston only to give it disproportionate funds to create redundant programs, departments and schools to siphon off top faculty and student talent, social and economic capital from UH to stifle it's academic growth and tremendous potential. The myopia and prejudice of this state's leaders over 20th century is astounding - to blame UH for any of this is blaming the victim (which is most middle and working class residents of Texas). Besides, public, non-profit services are not created to compete with each other.

  3. Kellyanne, is that you? That's some good spin. Texas violates state law, spends hundreds of millions without approval, and then gets shut down when lawmakers look into the deal and UH is crooked? I bet you blame Hillary for the Russian specter.

  5. Oooh, can we talk about the $5.2 million UT paid it's previous football coach to do even less for UT? Or maybe the $19 million that UT paid to have him replaced with Tom Herman? http://www.hookem.com/story/much-costing-texas-get-tom-herman-19-million/ as one commenter stated: with that kind of investment anything less than a national championship is subpar. I'll grant you that they make a lot of money on football, so academics are a different story, but still, these are some pretty stunning numbers, and then to get bent out of shape that someone in charge of academics gets paid a lot? regarding calling UHD a dropout factory, here's a good story to read: http://www.chron.com/opinion/outlook/article/Olivas-Drop-out-factory-report-doesn-t-reveal-9198606.php

  6. WeWork is just an "office share" arrangement like others that already exist downtown and elsewhere, right? I have a friend with a budding consulting business renting a shared office space now. She loves it. But, how is WeWork different any why should I be more excited about this than another shared office space?

  7. Old English font, the use of "libations", uncomfortable metal chairs. Tsk tsk... the interior overall looks nice but they went a little overboard on the brick wall (4th from the bottom). bitching ended.

  8. Behind the scenes of this disgusting project... ugh.. They're trying to benefit the downtown business owners cos they're the ones who requested the pierce to be demolished, without caring about the through traffic which is rerouted in a less convenient way.. and demolish the awesome skyline views from every highway, which is a reason why this is a nonsense project... I just hope the project doesn't happen. That they'll lose all of the funding and I wish txdot bad luck and I hope that they go broke like massdot went in huge debt.

  12. I'm sorry but that is one tacky M, on top of this building. The craftsmanship much less the design is so bad. They must have gone to the Randall Davis school of design.

  14. I'm not sure why people have a problem with palm trees being planted. While SE/coastal areas of the metro feature the most optimal growing climate (and with the largest varieties of species), everywhere in the Houston has a climate warm enough to support the planting of many types of palms. There are two native palm varieties specifically to the Houston area (sabal minor and sabal brazoria), but even if there weren't, it doesn't matter, since many palms have been shown to do well in Houston's climate, from dates to washingtonias to sabals. No palm is native to coastal California, doesn't stop places like LA from planting loads of them. It really doesn't matter if a plant is native or not; if it can grow well, then there is no problem using it. Crape myrtles aren't native to the US, yet they grow just fine in Houston, and no one throws a fit at their presence.
