  1. Guys, this has wandered too far off topic. Please address future posts in this topic to the topic.

  2. I wouldn't worry. We are in Houston.. we'll get plenty more skyscrapers in the decades to come, ones far more impressive than this tower. This city just has so much potential, I think that's why I come to this forum so often... to see the ever growing changes coming our way. Sure, there will be slowdowns as there always have been, but this city just grows more and more impressive all the time.

  3. So a brown dude waltzed in and met Marlowe and his green-eyed agent Stephanie. Some info I got... Projected groundbreaking 6/15 (depending on sales obviously) 20 month construction timeframe Target is 18 contracts to move forward 2 contracts already signed Office had activity when I arrived and I had to wait. An agent and his client (yes, rich white people) whom lived at OPP were there and were ready to make an offer, overheard them asking questions in regards to procedure on this. Brochure I was given has the same info as website. Pic of the model's 8th floor amenities deck https://twitter.com/thachadwick/status/584065894940160000

  4. honestly this little slow down will be a blessing in disguise. I think we were building a little too quickly and I think this gives the city time to catch up a little bit. There are of course going to be some casualties (namely this tower as well as others), but it just means there will be better ones to follow.

  6. Deep Breath. /Sigh Nonenadalize clearly never took a Highschool physics. W=∫Fdx W = ΔE KE=1/2 mv^2 ΔKE=∫Fdx Where F=Impact force, W equals Work, E equals Energy in a system, KE is Kinetic Energy. Your homework, tonight is to estimate the mass of 10 floors. Moving, 12 feet due to gravity, and determine how much force is applied. When you do that: Find me a construction material on this planet that can resist that kind of energy and force.

  7. Dude don't even give him the time of day. He clearly has an agenda. Lets not fuel it I researched this while in college during my structures course. The guy simply can not accept the realities of what happened. The reason why he is using "improbable" is because he clearly is a conspiracy theorist. The floors did pancake on top of each other. The debris which radiated out from the building was from the floors above where the planes struck, anything that was inside of the office, and exoskeleton falling outwards since it no longer had it's connection with the core structure. In fact I would like a mod to please move or delete any posts about WTC or conspiracy as we are now far away from the originial intent of the question asked about the core of this building and how it relates to WTC....which it does only in look, but is constructed from concrete and not out of steel making this an entirely different case from WTC making everything that has been discussed about WTC completely irrelevant.

  8. I agree that stores like Target, Bath and Body Works, Marshall's, etc. would work well downtown.

  9. They are. I was sad to see that one go, but I think the new development is probably an improvement. I love old buildings, but sometimes they outlive their usefulness. I've always thought it's simply polite that if you take down something aesthetically pleasing or interesting, you should replace it with something as good or better. I think Catalyst satisfies that, even if it took a decade. The hotel where the Finger development is now was cool too. When the ballpark was going in someone was looking to renovate it and took off some old facades. There was an old cafeteria there with southwestern motifs and the old painting was there on the walls advertising Indian curios and stuff to the traveling salesmen. There was also a wall painted with the names of cites and their distances. They were playing to the perception that this was cowboy and indian country. Anyway, having worked in that part of DT 15-20 years ago, and seeing it now, it,s astonishing to see the changes.

  11. I would agree with Triton - DT Houston will be fine. Prime example: 10 years ago, Block 69 was once earmarked for a residential highrise called "Shamrock Tower" by Tracy Suttles. The project eventually stalled and died. Going up here now: Hines' 609 Main - Id say we're all happy with the end result.

  12. A pool on the north side of the building will hardly ever get any sun and thus never be used. Why not have it on the south side of the building?

  13. My mistake, you're right about the Hines project now being in there - I got too hung up on the idea of looking at the bottom right.

  14. agreed, and I apologize for kind of introducing it as an example.

  16. Without rational explanation is WTC 7's improbable free-fall into its footprint. Also improbable. The steel structure below the impact zones were unaffected by any heat and therefore - minus any other destructive force upon it - present an imposing upward resistance to the falling of the failed structure above it. Yet as history shows they offered no resistance whatsoever to the downward force of the upper floors. At a minimum, the rational outcome for each tower would be a non-symmetric collapse whereby, instead of falling relatively 'neatly' into its footprint, chunks of the building would be strewn over a much wider swath at ground-level with a lower segment of the tower still standing. For this scenario to play out in the second tower in virtually mirror fashion is quite a feat indeed. The weakness and general acceptance of NIST's presentation survives due to our collective servility in the midst of national grief, uber-patriotism and its accompanying jingoism.

  20. It's so depressing looking at these renderings lol... I mean think about how massive an impact this would have on our skyline... so gorgeous!

  21. They are doing the project in stages. That's why it's just a master plan. They approved the plan that has the projects that are inside the master plan. When each project in the master plan becomes a little more developed and is ready to move forward with construction then they might each need to be approved individually (i'm speculating). I think what most people assume is that the the council along with approving this master plan also approved the exact budget of this. The figure that they put out the press and is being reported is an estimated figure of the potential costs of the project, but it is neither the budget or the amount of money that the project will get. This master plan is simply the first step! It still has a long way to go, but this is an important first step and I think this is very revealing in terms of the current state of the council where they are shown that they are willing to bankroll large civic projects such as this. Everything will be constructed over the next two decades, but it's not going to be like the park will close for 20 years and then boom 20 years later is ribbon cutting time.

  22. I agree that it should remain in "Going Up", but I think that there is room for improvement in this forum in how projects are labeled or tagged. Whether it's a separate tag on the side of the thread or expressed in the title some indicators on what stage a project is in (of course to the best of our knowledge) would help a great deal to the curious and general forum lurker. Here are some tags that I would recommend either developed as separate highly visible tags or put in the title of the thread and adjusted as the project evolves. Possible Tags: *Rumored* - since we have so many dedicated HAIFers who like to go above and beyond to find new projects, spy various notice of variance requests around town, or have insider info on potential development I think this should be one of the first tags used on any going up thread as a way to differentiate between a project from word of mouth to one actually announced and on it's way into development. *Announced* - used as the initial tag for any new thread where a project is first announced either by a architecture firm, developer, real estate firm, city/state/national gov., official organizations, or the press *In Development* - Another term that might fit here is "Design Development", but "In Development" helps keep the entire design process in a more general setting since we aren't privy to information as far as if they are in Schematic Design, or Design Development, or simply planning. This tag would be used after we start getting more info on what the building will be and start seeing site plans, renderings, etc... *Under Construction* - this tag would be used the moment we start seeing soil samples, bulldozers/boots on the ground, or a ground breaking ceremony taking place. This tag means that the project is under construction and is on it's way to being completed. *On Hold* - one of the tags listed here that no one wants to see, but happens because it's the nature of the business. This tag would be used once we have official word a project is on hold or there has been a significant amount of time since original development cycle. *Canceled* - the dreaded tag we hope never graces any thread, Canceled (I also thought about the tag simply saying "Dead" but that might be a little harsh). This tag is for when the project is officially canceled via word from developers, architects, or the press themselves or if someone has reliable info about a projects impending cancellation, but like the announcement tag this one should be limited only if it's from an official source. *Completed* - Yaaa the project is finally completed. Congrats, now it can proudly wear this tag with honor. In conclusion I hope that something like this would be something to seriously consider for this forum as it could help clear up a lot of confusion. The majority of people who look into these threads are Lay-people and I know this could help out their understanding a lot about what stage each project is on, but even us who are in the industry would certainly appreciate this kind of organization as well. Just some thoughts especially when you recently posting a lot of these renderings that are, while cool to see, do add a little bit to the confusion on whether a project is actually happening, dead, or in development. It's adds more context to those images posted.

  23. It's still somewhat of a barren location. As the hotel across the street, second skyhouse and block 334 come online it should become a lot more attractive to potential tenants.

  24. I realize that the guy who named everything at Infiniti something beginning with Q has his stated reasons for going to CT#. Still, what's wrong with Seville / DeVille / Fleetwood / Eldorado, or if you MUST be numerical, go back to the 30s with 50 (which was actually badged LaSalle), 60, 61, 62, 65, 60 Special, 70 (badged Fleetwood), etc.?

  27. It has been fenced for awhile since Mission Construction moved their trailer to the lot. I am the Production Manager for the theater, and we have been awaiting the lengthy City of Houston permitting process. Construction of our new theater should be commencing by the end of the year. toxtethogrady - Just to point out that yes, The Queesbury is a community theater, the A.D. Players is not. We have a full time staff of 20 professionals and several contract artists that produce 10 shows a year. In addition, the Queensbury was fortunate enough to have a piece of property that a developer wanted, and I believe that their new building was part of the deal for the land where the old theater was. The 2015-16 theater season is going to be very exciting for Houston with The Alley moving back into their newly renovated theater, the opening of the new Queesbury Theater, the newly renovated Main Street theater on Times Blvd, the opening of the MATCH, and the opening of the A.D. Players new theater. Very exciting for all of us in the business and our patrons.
