2010 Vancouver Olympic Venues

Recommended Posts

I recently got back from a trip to the Northwest. I shot some pictures of the venues for the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics, to be held in Vancouver in February. I've included links for information about each building. I wasn't able to make it to every venue in Vancouver, but I got most of them. Also, I didn't bother with the stuff in Whistler because it's mostly ski slopes and there wasn't snow when i was there.

Thanks for sharing, Ed!

Love second pic of the BC place and the pedestrian bridge!

Now, for a world class city, you'd figure they would BURY THE ELECTRICAL WIRES UNDERGROUND.....but that's just me. :)

I think those wires you see are temporary. Much of the Olympic village is still under construction (and ONE BILLION dollars over budget). I suspect the wires will go underground like they are in the rest of the city when it's done.

Vancouver's kind of peculiar with its wires. Virtually everywhere they're buried, but then they run much of the bus system off of hydro power, so there are overhead wires powering the buses all over the place. Or maybe that's a safety factor -- if you have overhead wires for the buses, you don't want the consumer grid overlayed in case there's an accident. Who knows? They also have street signs hanging off of wires in places where the electrical system is buried, so maybe it's not an aesthetic thing. Could it be seismic?

I can tell you, though, that there are a lot of absolutely stunning views of the city that are ruined by the overhead bus wires. Trying to work around them isn't always possible.

Where will they park the cruise ships?

Seattle. I don't know this authoritatively, but I heard people at Canada Place saying that the last ships left September 30th and that there would be no more cruise ships until after the games.
