Why would Reliant Energy move out of the Reliant Energy building and into a smaller building? I am guessing they ran out of space in that building and are expanding or something? I am guessing it's probably a net gain...

doesn't sound like it

Laurie Fickman, a spokeswoman for RRI Energy, a wholesale market generator, said the company had known Reliant would move out of RRI Energy Plaza, "ever since we sold our Texas retail business and the Reliant retail brand name to NRG." "We're working with Cushman & Wakefield to fill the space" that Reliant will vacate, Fickman said.

I guess that's good in the short run, but now HP has less usable retail space.

exactly, if new tenants were signing on every month, this would be sad news, but since this is not the case, its better to fill up the space that nobody is using.

besides one can argue that since 1000 people are moving in, this helps by expanding the customer base.....more people, more money being spent.

but i believe they're moving from 1000 Main, which is just one block away.

I'm a Reliant employee at 1000 Main, and I'm one of the folks who will be making the move. A couple of months ago, the *original* Reliant Energy sold its retail operation to NRG, and the brand name was part of the deal. So the original Reliant Energy has now changed its name to RRI Energy, and they are staying in 1000 Main. The *new* Reliant Energy (now part of NRG) is currently subleasing space in 1000 Main, but needs to GTFO eventually.

It's a win for Houston Pavilions, because while 1000 Main may only be a block or so away, it's a loong surface block, particularly in a heat wave. And I think I can speak for most 1000 Main dwellers when I say we currently get most of our lunches from the tunnel system.

thank you! not to mention that HP is 3 blocks long(excluding garage), so it can be up to 4 blocks away...

OMG! 4 blocks! That could be 1000 feet!

Maybe one of these would help...

When it is 100 + outside people, including myself, don't won't to walk outside and come back to work smelling like that lady in the picture..... The people eating in the tunnels are walking the same 1000'/distance if they were on street level

Don't worry, E. While you'll never convince a guy like me, who used to walk as much as 10 blocks across downtown in a suit to the various courthouses no matter the weather, there are plenty of people in Houston who think sweating is a disease. I'm probably the only person on the forum who thinks complaining about walking a 250 foot block is the sign of a pansy. Remember, I was the one that went 2 1/2 weeks after Ike without AC...and didn't complain. So, I am kind of a weirdo, a Houstonian who will walk outside. :)

Nope, you're not the only one on the forum RedScare. I agree that complaining/whining about walking 250 feet is the sign of a pansy/chronic whiner.

But for those who are too horrified of the surface to be able to handle the ENTIRE CITY BLOCK from 1000 Main to HP, they could ride the air conditioned elevators down to the tunnel level, cross over in air conditioned tunnels to Macy's, ride up the escalator in air conditioned comfort and then just cut across the corner to HP. Very few calories required.

Bottom line is, its great that retail space is being taken by office use because it looks like this is the best-case scenario...

I personally could walk plenty of blocks, but Houston never was a walking-oriented city or pedestrian-oriented....so this should come to no surprise, and thank you for the hyperbole.....

  • 3 weeks later...

Went to Pete's Piano Bar last night... excellent stuff. Place was packed, good crowd, and the performers were very entertaining... I'm getting real excited about the other stuff opening up in the Pavilions this month. The place is starting to get a lot more foot traffic which is great to see downtown.

This is too funny. LOL!!

People talk a big game about Texas heat, but they're wimps at heart. Air-conditioned baseball and football. I'm surprised they haven't invented and marketed a special Texas edition of an enclosed, air-conditioned lawn mower.

And one wonders why it's fat capital of the world.

Brian Distefano, marketing manager of the 43,000- square-foot House of Blues, which opened in October, said the Pavilions location has had the most financially successful launch in the 13-unit company's history.

Wow... that's pretty impressive considering some of the other locations they have. :)
