  8. Some Missouri City residents against rezoning for proposed Palace Event Center | Community Impact "According to agenda documents, the development would feature: A 96,000-square-foot, six-story hotel, consisting of approximately 80 rooms A 22,750-square-foot event center with breakout space Six residential cottage units to be used as an accessory to the event facility An outdoor event space Parking and landscaping elements Should the development be approved, construction is expected to begin on Phase 1 in 2025 for the event center and four cottage units, while Phase 2 will begin in 2027 with the hotel’s construction, according to agenda documents." Interestingly enough, the information that the city had updated on this project appeared the same day as the above article (4/19). It shows there have been some adjustments to the plan. The new site plan reflects the comments from residents. Those changes now include... -Reduction in size of the hotel from 6 to 4 floors, and combining it with the event center rather than as standalone structures -Reducing the number of "cottage" units from 6 to 3. -Increasing the size of the sound barrier walls -Moving the properties closer to Knight Road and further from the natural preserve section. -Retaining all trees in the natural preserve area -Adding a swale to form a barrier between the nearby residential and aid in stormwater drainage Zoning | Missouri City, TX - Official Website (missouricitytx.gov) Initial notice issued to neighbors in February: missouricitytx.gov/DocumentCenter/View/16562/Palace-Event-Center-Packet Site plan with updated comments from meeting mentioned in article, posted by city on 4/19: https://www.missouricitytx.gov/DocumentCenter/View/16620 City response to comments: City-Responses-to-Zoning-Amendment-Concerns (missouricitytx.gov)

Expedia layoffs in Austin again - Austin Business Journal (bizjournals.com) "In a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission on April 22, Cathy Rankin, Expedia's human resources director, said the layoffs at its 11920 Alterra Parkway office will start on June 21. That's within one of the larger towers on the north end of The Domain in North Austin. The company did not state a reason for the layoffs in its filing, but a spokesperson said in a statement to the Austin Business Journal that the job cuts are part of about 1,500 cuts globally that it announced on Feb. 22. Expedia previously has said it laid off 64 people at its Austin office in The Domain as part of that move. Combined, that means the company's 2024 layoffs in Austin are impacting 148 people."

  19. Last month, Community Impact published an article on Sophie. The article provides a little more insight about the concept. As mentioned, Sophie is a new cocktail bar and lounge from La Ciel Hospitality. It's opening soon Montrose Collective. According to an Instagram post from the brand, the bar will span two levels. The upstairs terrace is meant to remind guests of sunset on the French Riviera, and the downstairs bar will be painted darkly with rich textiles. https://communityimpact.com/houston/heights-river-oaks-montrose/dining/2024/03/22/new-cocktail-bar-coming-soon-to-montrose/

  24. @Urbannizer @Triton if possible, can you consider merging this topic with the one linked below? This is part of a shopping center, according to HCAD records. The shop consists of 602-610 W Alabama St. https://www.houstonarchitecture.com/topic/46098-acadian-bakery-at-604-w-alabama-st/
  25. @editor can you please provide further information about the recent addition of archiving topics? Why was this feature added? Are topics archived by a moderator? Or are topics automatically archived after a certain amount of time has passed? I've messaged a few members and they noticed this as well in recent weeks. We're wondering if it's possible to remove this feature. Or at the very least, limit it to other subforums where there is little to no activity. There have been new developments for several topics I wanted to share, but that's not possible. The topics are archived. There's no way to search for them on the forum because they don't come up. They are completely hidden. You have to search on Google to find them, and that's only if Google crawled the page. Or one has to scroll through pages on the subforums to find a topic that's archived. And when you find the topics, you're not able to post anything because it's closed. I could see a need for archiving topics in subforums like HAIF on HAIF, Off Topic, Way Off Topic, and The Weather. Many users or visitors don't post or visit those forums often. But the other subforums? Mainly the Going Up, Neighborhood, and Traffic and Transportation forums have topics where projects and developments are discussed off and on over the years. That's largely in part because renovations may happen down the line, new ownership, and the list goes on. For example, there's upcoming renovations for the Westheimer Center. I was going to post about it, but couldn't find the topic. I knew it was here. I saw the topic a few months ago. So, I Googled the center's name and the forum to find it. Lo and behold, the topic exists, except it's hidden from the forum search. Why? It's archived and closed for further discussions. I understand the cost of running this site and storing everything on servers is not only expensive, but takes a lot of storage. But I'm hoping there's a better way to keep topics open. Especially ones in the neighborhood and Going Up forums. https://www.houstonarchitecture.com/topic/39286-westheimer-center-at-1212-1232-westheimer-rd/

  27. The admin of Houston Heights Foodies claims Space Cadet is closed at 4002 N Main St. He didn't provide additional information. The admin of that group posts wrong information all the time. He posted as a fact that Spices 39 would be an Indian restaurant and was dismissive when others told him it will be a Chinese restaurant. He told his followers the former Revival Market space will be Pepper Twins. Several people corrected him that it will be Cooking Girl and that the news isn't an exclusive as he posted since it was announced months ago. He was dismissive about that too. And the list goes on. So, it may be worth waiting for a more reliable source for confirmation. I reached out for confirmation via Space Cadet's Instagram and the owner's Instagram. If I hear anything back, I'll pass it along.
