Lake Houston Wilderness Park

25840 FM 1485, New Caney, TX 77357

Hiking in Houston does exist!!  Let’s #optoutside this #sunday and hit the trails!  These are actual dirt trails with hills and surrounded by trees and some wildlife.

Total Mileage: 5-6 miles

Level of Difficulty:  All levels but you should be able to walk about 25 minute miles.

We don’t leave anyone behind. The faster people will loop back to meet up with the rest of the group and we’ll regroup at intersections so everyone knows where to go.  We’ll take short water breaks throughout the hike.

What to bring:

·        Water

·        Long pants

·        Sun & bug protection

·        Sturdy Shoes

·        Snacks

After Hike:

·        Lunch for a picnic in the park afterward

·        Camping chair to relax

Dog-friendly for friendly dogs - must bring water and poop bags for your dog

Not Kid-friendly due to the length of the hike.

Fees:

·        BCO & HTXO members & Guests - Free sign-up to hike + $3 entrance fee per person

·        Non-member - $5 sign-up to hike + $3 entrance fee per person

This is not a TX State Park so your park pass will not work.  We will have a check-in spot at the event for you to receive your wristband to join the hike. The entrance fee is paid at the park when you arrive.  Please allow 10 minutes extra to get through the front gate & drive to the parking lot since it’s at the back of the park.

How to find the group:

There is a parking lot before the nature center on the left.  Look for the HTXoutdoors and Bayou City Outdoors sign at the entrance of the parking lot.  We’ll start the hike from there.

Parking:

There is plenty of parking near the start location.  The parking lot is at the back of the park so please allow extra time to drive there and arrive on time for the hike.

Start Time:

Arrive at 10 am for a 10:15 am sharp start time.

About the Park:

“Lake Houston Wilderness Park encompasses 4,786.6 acres of wooded parkland, approximately 30 minutes north of downtown Houston off of Highway 59 near the town of New Caney. It is the only park in the H.P.A.R.D. system where overnight camping is available. A vehicle bridge over Peach Creek has opened the entire park to access by automobile. The park is a wilderness park and is heavily forested, so visitors need to be aware that wildlife in the park includes several species of snakes. Please remember that conditions on natural waterways change without warning, so keep safety in mind as you paddle the creeks.”  by Lake Houston Wilderness Park.

Never been before??

No worries! More than half of the people going have never been before and many people show up by themselves. So when you show up, if everyone looks like they have known each other for years.... Don’t worry. They likely just met. Look for the event leader and then they know it’s your first time and we’ll make sure to take care of you! :D
