New Year’s Night Hike

January 1, 2020 - Meet at 6:15 PM, start 6:30 PM to 8 PM

Meet at Memorial Park Rugby Field Parking Lot

N Picnic Lane, Houston, TX   77007

“For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice.” T.S. Eliot

WELCOME TO 2020!!  wait... where are the flying cars???

While it might not look like what we thought based on the Jetsons, I’m super excited for a fresh start in 2020!

You’ve made resolutions in the past to be healthier and more adventurous, but this year is your year to actually make it happen, and good news, we’re here to help. Who do you want to be in 2020? What do you want to accomplish?

Put your best foot forward on January 1st and hike in the New Year with Bayou City Outdoors and HTXoutdoors’ New Year’s Night Hike! Even if you’re not the resolution type, we can’t think of a better way to kick off the New Year than exploring the back trails of Houstonians’ favorite, Memorial Park. As the Chinese Proverb goes, “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

Call me an optimist, but I love New Year’s Day. For me, it’s like I get the chance to hit life’s big reset button. Midnight hits, the ball drops, and I’m all of a sudden, miraculously refocused and determined to check-off everything on my resolution bucket list.

One of those things on my list this year, along with so many of our other members, is to hike the Incan Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. To make it to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I’m going to have to walk 8-12 miles a day. It goes without saying that I’ll be starting my training January 1st with our New Year’s Night Hike.

I’ll leave you with another corny quote by C.S. Lewis to hopefully inspire you to join us on January 1st and/or any day after, “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.” We’ve got bigger and better adventures planned ahead for 2020, whether you want to stick around in Houston or travel the globe, visit our websites to find out more!

HIKE EVENT DETAILS

We’ll be meeting at the Rugby Field Parking Lot in Memorial Park, and heading out at 6:30 pm promptly, to hike some of Houston’s best inner city outdoor trails. The hike will most likely last until 8 pm.

Fees:

This Event is free for BCO & HTXO members and $5 for Non-members.

Please leave your human kids at home, but feel free to bring your other furry ones. We find our four-legged friends can keep up on hikes and are less impacted by our undistinguished adult behavior.  But please bring poop bags and water!

HTXO Sand Volleyball Social
January 3, 2019 - 6 PM – 9 PM
Sideout Volleybar
2623 Keene St
Houston, TX 77009

Are you looking for more than just another happy hour?

Our happy hour and volleyball event is a great introductory event to help you get active outdoors and to meet other people who are also looking for more than just happy hour. Plus having games to focus on, helps remove some of the awkward pauses that can happen the first time you meet someone.

And the best part… you’re meeting people with similar interests.  Not just people interested in happy hour or volleyball. The group of people who attend this event are looking for new friends who want to explore Houston, try new things, and get outdoors!

No experience required for volleyball
We’ll spend a little time warming up and going through the rules.  Then we’ll play a few games… we can get as competitive as you all want, but mostly, we’re there to have fun.
We’re an inclusive group which means we still hit the ball to new players who may or may not be able to return it. It’s the only way people can get better!

Don’t you want to play volleyball? No problem!
Plenty of people come out just to socialize on the large patio, play a game of cornhole or ping pong!  Plus, they have a full bar and food truck.

What to expect:
Getting there: You can’t see Sideout from the street near the railroad tracks. Once you turn, you’ll see a large dark parking lot.  Sideout is at the very end of the parking lot and fully lit when you get there.

Parking: FREE PARKING and there is plenty of it! The parking lot is overflow parking for While Oak Music Hall (WOMH). If there is an event at WOMH, you might see a parking attendee collecting money for parking.  Just tell them that you’re there for volleyball and you don’t have to pay to park.

How to find the group: The venue is not usually packed. When you walk in, turn to the right and follow the patio towards the building. We usually set up a table with an HTXoutdoors sign outside of the door that leads inside the building. If you get to the ping pong table or the dog park, just turn around and you’ll probably see us on the right. If you don’t see the HTXoutdoors sign, ask the bartender.  They usually know where we are.  We usually play on Court 1 which is the court closest to the bar.

About the group you’re meeting: Because this event is open to everyone, we get a lot of people who are coming out for the first time! That means not everyone knows each other yet so you don’t have to worry about crashing a group of people who have been friends for years. So if everyone is chatting up a storm when you get there, it’s just because they have quickly realized they have a lot in common. And even when some of the people know each other, they are still there to meet more people with similar interests.

Dog & Kid Friendly: Dog-Friendly for friendly dogs.  The dog must be on a leash… UNLESS… you let them loose in the dog park attached to the patio!

Kid-Friendly for friendly kids until 9 pm.  After 9 pm, the venue turns to 21+.

Who is HTXoutdoors?
If you have been looking for a group to explore Houston, do outdoor activities and meet people with similar interests, you have finally found it! We are Houstonians (new, original and somewhere in between) in our 20’s & 30’s and we love the outdoors! With a zest for adventure, we have day trips, weekend trips & international trips.  So if you have 2 weeks of vacation or “unlimited”…you can find new adventures to fit your schedule.

Come out and meet others interested in hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, rock climbing and more!  It’s a good chance to meet each other. It’s an even better chance to plan some adventures.

HTXO Full Moon Hike
January 9, 2020 at 7 PM – 8:30 PM
Meet at Memorial Park - Rugby Fields
N Picnic Ln Houston
Texas, 77007

Shhh… it’s a secret trail. And we’re doing it at night, during the full moon!

At its sight, this primal side of you might take over. Ever heard of the lunar lunacy effect or the Transylvania effect? While we are happy to report that no one has transformed at HTXoutdoors on a full moon hike…YET, but we do believe in celebrating its beauty with a nice hike.

About the Trail:
We are hiking on an actual trail with hills!  Yes, right here in Houston!  This is not a pathed path which makes it interesting when you hike back at night, in the dark!

What to bring:
- Headlamp or light source (the trees get thick so you’ll need it). Flashlight, headlamp, phone light.  It will be dark by the end of the hike. Bring a source of light.
- Water is required! Stay hydrated… it’s easy to forget to drink when it’s not that hot out.
- Bug Spray
- Wear long pants
- Wear sturdy shoes that are okay to get to muddy

After the hike, we’ll pick a place and grab something to eat so bring some money!

Fees:
This Event is free for BCO & HTXO members and $5 for Non-members, Guests.

Dogs-Friend for friendly dogs
If the temperature is less than 80 degrees, you can bring your dog. You must bring water and poop bags for your dog.

Adults only. No kids
We have other events that are appropriate for kids.

What happens if it is raining out
We do not cancel before the day of the event and then we only cancel if it’s dangerous.
If it is raining a little, we will still go but we will alter the route. Hiking on wet trails cause erosion and is expensive to fix.  Trails are closed after heavy rains. We will follow the rules for open/closed trails.

Leave No Trace
Put any empty bottles or trash in the garbage cans. Do not throw garbage on the ground. No one is there to clean up after you.

RSVP at https://htxoutdoors.com/events/htxo-full-moon-hike-3/   For additional info e-mail info@htxoutdoors.com

No worries!  More than half of the people going have never been before and many people show up by themselves.  So when you show up, if everyone looks like they have known each other for years.... Don’t worry. They likely just met.  Look for the event leader and then they know it’s your first time and we’ll make sure to take care of you!

BCO presents A Walk in the Woods Aka Hiking in Houston

January 18, 2020 – meet at 9:30 AM, start at 10 AM to 11:30 AM

Meet at Memorial Park by the rugby/soccer field parking lot

N Picnic Lane

Houston, TX 77007

Join us for an hour and a half, quick-paced hike through some of the lesser-known (and more adventuresome) trails our park has to offer.

About this Event

Hiking in Houston does exist! And we’re going to show you by taking you on some ‘hidden’ trails that even some native Houstonians don’t know about! And, it’s right here, inside the loop!

What to Wear:

These are actual trails!! Wear tennis shoes or hiking boots, as it’s easy to bang a toe on a tree root. You’ll be shocked at some of the "elevation" in the park that you wouldn’t expect from just driving by. Wear long pants, yes, even in the summer. It helps to protect your legs from bugs, critters and branches that might jump out and bite you!

What else to bring:

- Water! Water is required.

- Bug Spray

- Sun Protection - hat, sunglasses, long sleeves, sunscreen

- Long pants and sturdy shoes

Where to Park:

Please, check the meeting location map (https://bit.ly/2M6GKST ) on the calendar before you head over to the park.  It’s a big park, and we try and leave on time!

If the lot is full, there is plenty of street parking.

How to find the group:

Look for the BCO sign for where the parking lot is. We’ll be on the grass at the back of that parking lot. (not standing in the parking lot.)

Fees:

This Event is free for BCO & HTXO members and member guests and $5 for Non-members

Never been before??

No worries! More than half of the people going have never been before and many people show up by themselves. So when you show up, if everyone looks like they have known each other for years.... Don’t worry. They likely just met. Look for the event leader and then they know it’s your first time and we’ll make sure to take care of you!

HTXO Social at Buffalo Bayou Brewing + wine!
January 22, 2020 - 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co.
2101 Summer St,
Houston, TX 77007

They have wine too!  We didn’t forget about our non-beer drinkers!

Find new friends who have a passion for the outdoors, trying new things and exploring Houston.  This is your last chance to try HTXO for free before membership closes on Friday.

With a large, covered patio, enjoy the crisp fresh air.  Or head to the 3rd floor for a great view of downtown Houston!  Great food, great drinks, great people... Great way to disconnect from your normal routine and meet people who are experiencing Houston.

When to arrive:
This is a come and go event since we'll be in the same location the entire time.  Can't make it right at 6 pm.  No Problem!  When you RSVP, in the notes section, just let us know roughly what time you're coming so we know how many seats to save.  We don't want to be 'that person' saving seats all night! :)

What to expect:
When you arrive, look for the HTXoutdoors signs to find the group.  There will be a check-in table.  We know it's not always fun going places by yourself so when you arrive, let us know and we'll help introduce you to people.

This is a laidback event so you can make it what you want.  And don't worry if you don't drink.  We're not a "get sloppy drunk" group and several members don't drink.  It's just a place to gather and start talking about outdoor events you want to do!

About HTXoutdoors:
If you have been looking for a group to explore Houston, do outdoor activities and meet people in your age range, you have finally found it!

Are we connected on Facebook?
We frequently post photos from events and add new events to Facebook.  It’s a great way to keep up with events and flag the ones you are interested in so do you don’t forget!  Connect Here:  https://www.facebook.com/htxoutdoors/
