A public event will be held to kick off World Space Week at AIA Houston on the evening of Thursday, Oct 4 as part of the AERIAL FUTURES: The Next Frontier think tank taking place in Houston between Oct 4-5, 2018.
Expanding Houston’s reputation as Space City, USA, Ellington Airport’s conversion into the Houston Spaceport will reiterate the city’s role as a front-runner in the space race of the 21st Century. As the most urban-centered commercial spaceport to date – Houston Spaceport is within a 15-minute drive of the central business district – this development will serve as a detonator in making Houston the most cosmically connected city in the world. Because of the Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act of 2015, the commercial sector is now driving the industry, with private investment in commercial space companies reaching a record $3.9 billion worldwide in 2017. The implications this has on the city, its economy, and its lifestyle has not gone unnoticed, with the spaceport earning both the Houston Business Journal’s Economic Deal of the Year Award and Overall Business Deal of the Year Award in 2016. AERIAL FUTURES: The Next Frontier brings together leading thinkers and practitioners to ask how commercial space operations and spaceports will promote economic generation and disrupt urban development impact in the 21st century.
PANELISTS
The panel discussion will be composed of leading designers and thinkers from the commercial space industry and the architecture community, including:
Chris Culbert, Center Chief Technologist at NASA Johnson Space Center
Ken Gidlow, Technical Advisor at FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation
Mario Diaz, Director of Aviation at Houston Airport System
Roger Soto, Director of Design at HOK
Marcus Martinez, Urban Design Committee at AIA Houston will Moderate

BCO Farmer’s Market Bike Ride

October 20, 2018 - 8:30 to 11:30 meet at 8:00 am
Onion Creek
3106 White Oak Dr.
Houston, TX 77007

NEW MARKETS - Houston!  We have a new Market in Midtown and longtime Urban Harvest Market is at new digs (get it? :)) and is growing.  Join us as we navigate a new route, to new markets for an old favorite!

Grocery stores are so overrated! Pedal with us this Saturday for a fun weekend ride that will leave your taste buds and souls enriched and support our wonderful Houston Farmers Markets.

Did you know many of our local restaurateurs’ shop at our Houston Farmers' Markets each week? There they find the best handcrafted cheeses, local produce, baked goods and locally sourced organic meats, and you can too! Our mission is to pedal fast enough to beat them before they take all the goods in the market, but slow enough to enjoy every revolution of the ride. We’re experts at finding the perfect balance! We’ll meander our way down side streets, trails and residential areas you never knew existed in the heart of Houston.

First, we’ll wake ourselves up with the delicious aroma of a leisurely Onion Creek coffee. After our caffeine kicks in, we’ll cruise off to the markets to shop for fresh produce, sauces, jams and delicious baked bread. This 12-15 mile ride lasts about three hours, so bring plenty of water and a backpack to carry all your goodies home!

Plan on sticking around after the ride to enjoy lunch at Onion Creek Cafe. They are a locally owned eatery with great food, atmosphere, brews, and friends!

No bike? No worries!
Houston has great rental options. Choose from:

B-Cycle Kiosk: Looking for the quickest rental option? B-Cycle allows you to rent via mobile app. There are many stations around town to pick up and drop off your rental. Check their map and pricing options information here: http://houston.bcycle.com .

Bike Barn: Prefer a person to person transaction and/or a faster bike? Then you should check out Bike Barn. We love their rental shop at their Bayou location: 105 Sabine St. Houston, Texas 77007 on Buffalo Bayou at Hidden Lake.

BCO Member Gear: If you are a member of Bayou City Outdoors and do not have a bike, we can loan you a bike for the ride. However, you MUST call the office 1 to 2 weeks in advance to arrange for the loaner bike.

Where to Meet: Onion Creek, 3106 White Oak Dr., Houston, TX 77007. Please DO NOT park in the Onion Creek lot – there is parking on the surrounding streets, but look out for ‘no parking’ signs. Meet at 8:00 AM – Our ride will go from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM.

This event is FREE for members and non-members alike. This event is open to older kids who have good bike handling skills. Please note - we will be riding on some busy Houston streets.

RSVP at https://bit.ly/2mObHf8 . For additional information, please call 713-524-3567 or e-mail to info@bayoucityoutdoors.com .

11th Annual BCO Haunted Hike

October 31, 2018 - 6:45 PM - 8 PM

Meet at Memorial Park near the rugby/soccer field parking lot

N Picnic LN - South side of Memorial (map link at www.bayoucityoutdoors.com)

Get your spooky on with BCO as we hike and slither our way through Memorial Park wooded trails and off the beaten path. What better to do on Halloween than to taunt the forest trolls?

For those who make it out of the forest in one piece, we’ll fortify ourselves with pizza and beverages and toast those we left behind just kidding!!

Tap into your inner wolf or go all vampy on us, or come as your witchy self. Leave the bars to the zombies and join us in the woods for some quality and creepy exercise and socializing at Memorial Park.

We meet at 6:30 and depart at 6:45 PM sharp from somewhere around the the rugby/soccer field parking lot on the south side (check the map and then look for the BCO signs) there’s a lot of construction at the Park these days.

For you chickens out there - just come to the after-party starting around 8 PM in the parking lot. Don’t get left in the dark and don’t forget to wear walking shoes (it is a hike no matter how dead you are), a flashlight, bug spray, and $5.00 for pizza.

Open to members, guests and the public (we love fresh meat) – bring a friend or come alone, if you dare. You'll be sure to find a devil or two to talk to. (Please no dogs at this hike)

*Bring $5 cash for pizza and your favorite after hike beverage (NO glass bottles).
