Town Center Theatre to debut off-Broadway show 'Sylvia'
    By: JAKE MUONIO, [email protected]
    10/11/2007
The final production of the year for the Town Center Theatre is set, as "Sylvia" begins Friday.
The show follows the story of a man, Greg, who comes across a dog, Sylvia, while out for a walk in the park. The man, 20 years into a marriage and with his children having recently all left the house, decides to bring the dog home and adopt it.
Sylvia becomes an issue of contention between Greg and his wife Kate, who was looking forward to an empty house so she could spend more time with her husband. The play follows a series of events that result in Sylvia becoming a part of the family.
"It's a very honest and sweet portrayal of the relationship between the man and his dog, and his wife," said Chris Tennison, artistic director for Town Center Theatre. "The play is the journey of Kate and Greg to find out what their lives mean after the kids have gone to school. It's something everybody in their 40s and 50s can understand, the feeling of, 'OK, what's next?' "

Dog Day: Mutt Strutt walk to benefit Humane Society
    By: DEBORAH ROWE, [email protected]
    10/03/2007
Pet owners and their dogs will be out in full force for the upcoming Mutt Strutt and Dog Day Afternoon.
The Montgomery County Humane Society's 13th annual one-mile pledge walk will be held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Town Green Park, rain or shine.
The pledge walk is followed by a day of fun and games, pet adoptions, artwork, food and drinks, entertainment and demonstrations.
"They have changed venues several times," said Skeeter Hubert, event chairman. "Last year they moved it to Town Green Park. It has done well each year."
Proceeds from the event traditionally go toward supporting the nonprofit humane society initiatives that include shelter, care, adoptions, spay/neuter programs and community education for pets. Funds generated at this year's event will be used by the humane society to build a new facility, pay operation expenses and help generate interest in animal adoption, Hubert said.
