The Kirby House
There are two comments.
I worked for the American Red Cross in thelate '60's and it was located at 2006 Smith Stin downtown Houston, TX. This was the Kirbyhome at one time. I was fascinated about the building. There was one room upstairs that was a closet and the whole room was all cedar. The smell of the room was exhilarating! It was like walking into a Forest after a light rainfall. Also, the front door was so heavy but very easy to push open. There were panels on the front door showing the stages of Mr John Kirby's success. It was all bronze! Very beautiful artwork imbedded in the front door. I read an article in the Houston Chronicle's Parade magazine the complete story of this house. It stated that it would cost too much money to demolish this house because it was so well built. I just loved working there. It shoul be preserved and I'm hoping it is still there since I have been gone for 39 years!

I wish more people would get involved in preservation and restoration of our historic buildings. There is so much to be learned from the past.
What a shame this house is not a museum. There is so much history surrounding Mr. Kirby. If we don't save our landmarks and teach the younger generation the history behind them, they are missing out on so much . - Thursday, October 30th, 2008 @ 10:19pm
