  1. Thanks for that. I've read about the Hines project and I did know it was to be in that area but somehow, I didn't think that was the location. I haven't been over there in probably 2 or 3 years. There is so much genealogy information online now that I haven't had reason to visit the Clayton lately.
  2. I hate to hear of this old beauty's fate. Several years ago I was doing a lot of family research at the Clayton Library. I used to go by this house and I wondered about it each and every time I saw that sign. Thanks for sharing a bit of it's history. I suppose there will be more apartments or condos there in the future.
  3. And the development of that family cemetery property next door that might be an issue. It should all come to a head fairly soon.
  4. Ah, I see the reason I was unable to find him, I was using the Radetski spelling instead of Radetzki as it is listed on Find A Grave. Interesting too, when following the family links on FAG, the daughter Georgiana Radetzki married Claudius Sears and both are buried in Glenwood. Checking probate records on the county clerk site, there is listed Fay Peters Radetzki who died in 1955 and executor of her estate was Gustave Reese Radetzki. His address is shown as 606 Southern Pacific Bldg. The SP Building address was 713 Franklin so I feel that the 606 must have been offices on the 6th floor. There are no probate records for Gus Reese Radetzki in Harris County. On Find A Grave the listing for Fay states that she was the wife of G.R. Radetzki. Fay is buried in Forest Park. A daughter of Gus died in 1975 and is in Forest Park also. That daughter was Adelaide and the executrix of her estate was Janice Radetzki Cage. Now, what is even more interesting is that in September of 1969 in Riverside Terrace, G.R. Radetzki is listed as Grantor of Lot 23 in Block 36 to the State of Texas as Grantee. With a little more research, I'm sure the address of that house could be found.
  5. I may be reaching here but the fact that they lived so close to Forest Park Cemetery leads me to think that he may be right across Lawndale from his home. I could not find him on Find A Grave but that only means that no one has posted it. I don't have any of the genealogy subscriptions to search those sites but there's a good chance information is available on him.
  6. Not even close, EspersonBuildings, ;o)) by 1960 I was long out of elementary. Check your 'inbox' here on HAIF, up at the very top of this page. I sent you a message.
  7. I too lived off Hiram Clarke (in late 50s & early 60s) and our number was ID3 xxxx. I also lived in Idylwood subdivision where our number was 926 xxxx. Idylwood subdivision dates back to the late 20s & early 30s. Pamela Heights dates to at least 1957 when our family moved there. The new subdivision had only 3 streets at that time, four if you counted Melcher. Beran was not developed through initially, there was only Ebbtide, Trail Lake and Knotty Oaks.** I don't know how the prefix was established for a given area but if I had to guess, I'd say that "whomever" just searched for a two letter combination with the corresponding two numbers that were not already in use and then found a word that began with those two letters. **This is off topic but want to share. We moved to southwest Houston in 1957 yet when I looked at the HCAD record for our house, the "date built" shows 1961.
  8. KBR site is out. The mayor said so at the townhall meeting on 3-31. Botanic Garden folks could not afford to buy it. They want a long term cheap lease from COH.
  9. First off, I really hope that someone else that attended comes here and gives their impression of the Town Hall meeting tonight, 3-31-14. I can give my thoughts but I'm so biased in the 'pro Gus' camp that I'd really like to read some in the 'pro garden' camp just to see if I miss-read the audience. I don't really think that many who were there tonight (3-31) actually read and post here but I'm willing to give it a chance. I'll check back in a day or two but it seemed a bit one sided tonight. Pro Golf Course.......for history and the youth. Doesn't really mean much if MAP is opposed though.
  10. Since the HBG will be a private non profit, they will do as they please but they may listen to suggestions tomorrow night at the town hall meeting. They will cut down many of the old oaks and no one can protest to the city about anything. I personally wish they'd put it in the middle of River Oaks. Or Southampton where Jeff Ross lives.
  11. The local word is that the town hall meeting to be held Monday 3-31 will cover plans for Wortham. Ross will speak about HBG and there is to be a presentation of the master plan for restoring Wortham Golf Course. Gallegos is a Parker puppet so he will be no help for the course preservation folks. He's still all bent out of shape about the Wayside Walmart. Not sure where the Glenbrook info originated but that may be out the door before it even got in.
  12. I don't personally know and have only seen a master plan of one location, Cullinan in Sugarland, which has been mentioned here. Houston Botanic Garden also considered Herman Brown Park out I-10 & Mercury but for whatever reasons, it fell through as did the Sugarland location. There's some old newspaper pieces floating around the net about the Herman Brown deal. Having said that, there were rumors in the east end that several other locations had been suggested by the COH Parks department, all of which were rejected by the HBG. Perhaps Cohen will cover those other locations. HBG had some green yard signs printed in English on one side and Spanish on the other, stating something about supporting a garden WITH a golf course. They popped up in yards across the east end as well as the red Save Gus Wortham signs from the Harrisburg Heritage Society. Somehow word got out that the Houston Botanic Garden could not or would not include a golf course in their design for Wortham and Idylwood pulled their support, not that it means anything in the grand scheme. Bottom line is that the botanic garden folks never wanted to have a golf course. Their initial proposal to the different organizations in the east end, back in August & September '13, only stated that there was a "possibility" of including a 9 hole course. Last I heard, HBG does not have a master plan for Gus Wortham. I suppose they put out a lot of money on the one for Cullinan before they had the OK on the location. They probably don't want to repeat that mistake. But, why would the city give them a long term lease WITHOUT seeing a master plan? Maybe because the CEO of HBG is an old college chum of Ms Mayor.
