  1. it's sad to see so many of the smaller shopping centers fall...i remember so many of the stores everyone's mentioning at the other oak forest shopping center (at one time that place was REALLY hopping)...and not just from the 45's at talleys - i remember going there too H2B...weingarten's was there too...western auto...palais royal... as for the shopping center on mangum, there was TG&Y (one of the kid's shows promoted TG&Y as the place to get the toys on their show)...the drug store was Dugan Drugs back in the late 50's...Smitty's hamburgers was down the street before DQ went in...i can't remember the name of the grocery store there, but i know it became a randall's eventually...and swonke's grocery was right down the street...i don't remember any of the other stores in the center...maybe someone that went to catherine smith es down the street would know...
  2. here's my first try at inserting photo bucket...thanks to hubby for helping with this... camp logan article...august 2004
  3. I have an article my Dad sent me from the Brenham Banner Press in August 2004. It tells about the "Mutiny of 1917", but no photos were in the article. I remember from years past seeing pictures involving the hangings, but have no idea anymore where...sorry I have the writers email address and street address I will forward to you in a PM. If we can figure out how to scan the article and post it here we will. lynda
  4. gonzo, i'm really enjoying the blogs in the chron., especially the then and now pictures. i agree, i think it's the same pony in ALL the pictures of little kids... i realized when looking at the pony picture, i have my own then and now too... i have the picture of me on the pony in the late 50's in cottage grove, and who would have thought years later, that little kid would be named the US National Champion with her own horses several times, especially with one that was spotted too... more then and now pictures please...thanks
  5. price's hamburgers were on wirt road just below long point... the mexican restaurant was panchos mexican buffet...they opened in the mid-60's next to palais royal...the buffet was $1.49 monterrey house was on wirt road next to fed-mart... western kitchen just around the corner from fed-mart had the BEST bbq...you could watch the meat being sliced for plates and sandwiches and they had the biggest baked potatoes...
  6. i remember at one time his tv set included a staircase that didn't go anywhere... don't know why i would remember these strange tidbits... at times, he also had a woman working with him - i have no idea what her name was does anyone have any idea who captain bob was?
  7. that's it! thank you very much...
  8. i think all of us could compile quite a list of all the "stars" we've seen at the HLSR (fat stock show @ the SH coliseum)...remember when elvis was there? they even sold sky box seats at regular prices to get all the people in...it was packed
  9. i remember captain bob too...what was the little car that he was shown driving up to the studio? i remember the door opened to the front. it was a strange little car. lynda

  11. i remember the big brick barn at the pin oak stables...i also remember it burned down around 81-82 i have 3 bricks from the old barn when it was torn down...does anyone have a picture of the brick barn or the inside? all the other barns were wooden barns used for horseshows that were taken down one by one the pin oak charity show lost some of its magic when it moved out to the astroarena
  12. you're taling about the cy-fair high school grounds, the rodeo arena, and the airport? if i remember correctly, one of the old cy-fair yearbooks around the time i graduated had an aerial photo... i'll see if i can find mine...i graduated in '73 do they still have the friday night rodeos during the summer?
  13. how about Phil's off s.shepherd? i remember the mason jar out on katy frwy... i remember the fillin'station on richmond with all its memorabilia... does anyone know if don jose mexican restaurant is still on antoine and pinemont? mr. clark and his first wife were some of the nicest people...i was their first customer when they opened... anyone remember "the goldmine"? They had the best prime rib. can anyone tell me the name of the steakhouse that used to be at the intersection of t.c. jester and ella? it had been in the building that "the smorgesboard" restaurant used to be in... anyone remember roznovsky's store off of birdsall and washington? that was the best place for cheesburgers and longnecks... all this talk is making me hungry
  14. wow! what fun the astrodome was...i went to soooo many rodeos there over the years...even showed horses there a few times...and won! the baseball games and football games were a lot of fun too...always had to have nachos and a beer... one of the best memories was UH Band Day and getting to be on the 'dome field with most area high school marching bands during a football game... i still remember seeing pictures of the judge's living quarters behind the scoreboards...they were really something - what happened to all the stuff that used to be there? i heard the scoreboards were sold...where'd they go? i can't believe astroworld is gone...that was a fun place.
  15. Mister Caboose was a local kids show on channel 11 in the mornings about the same time as Cadet Don on channel 13...it was in the early 60's...he came on before the Captain came on
