Popular Post Urbannizer
https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Houston-council-moves-forward-on-Barbara-Bush-12864943.php https://www.houstonlibraryfoundation.org/plazacaseforsupport Days after former first lady Barbara Bush was laid to rest, Houston City Council moved forward on the reconstruction of the Central Library plaza that bears her name. The council approved a $396,582 appropriation to Houston-based landscape architects Lauren Griffith Associates for design and construction at Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza at 500 McKinney in downtown. The funds will cover designs for the reimagined plaza, which includes an area for art exhibits, additional landscaping, two reading areas, a new viewing screen for public movies, a water vapor cooling station, and a café with outdoor seating. The item comes three years after the council approved $105,071 for the initial design and construction work on the plaza. That work covered new fencing and gates and added landscaping, among other improvements.
nate4l1f3
Project by project, block by block, this city is being remade and I absolutely love watching it happen.
Twinsanity02
Pleased to see this project. Houston has always projected power, massiveness, and strength, but it has sorely lacked human scaled charm. This is along with several other changes in the city have added some charm. I agree with nate4l1f3.
UtterlyUrban
what is the goal of this plaza and how does its goal foster the goal of a lending library? there are places that exist today for parents to bring kids to be exposed to the arts and reading. Discovery Green is one of those places. It seems to me that the goal of a lending library system should be to help kids understand research and reading. Will seein performances, including the depicted music performances do that? Edited April 29, 2018 by UtterlyUrban

Popular Post editor
The new mosaics outside the Central Library are finally visible. They were installed several months ago, but remained covered by tarps for a very long time, I presume to allow the concrete/adhesive/whatever to dry and cure properly. The first one says "I read it cover to cover" in what I presume is Barbara Bush's handwriting, with her signature. The last has "Once upon a time..." in a typewriter-style font. I'm glad they installed that one without disturbing the plants. 11
