Subdude
That's been the case for several months. I have no idea when construction is supposed to start.
Sunstar
From my vantage point at work I can make out bulldozers beginning to move earth on this lot. Not sure if this means the project is in full swing yet, but at least something is going on.
ToolMan
Yep, there are bulldozers, cement trucks, and big holes. I think they have officially started.

RedScare
The foundation is well underway. Concrete and rebar sprouting up everywhere. No discernible shape can be observed yet.

Ashikaga
Are you referring to the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral in downtown? If so, I believe they are still raising funds for it. They put an outline on the ground to show how big it will be.I think the bell tower has been taken off the plan to save costs."Our Lady of 115th Street". WesternGulf
This will be beautiful, but that Amegy Bank building and all the post modern crap will steal from its glory. Atleast during the day.

Subdude
Are they still going to build "Cathedral Square" on the block that will be vacated when they tear down the old church across the street? I haven't heard any news on it, or seen any renderings.
Houstonian in Iraq
Some pics of the Cathedral being built, bottom right side you can see the dome. Edited April 2, 2006 by Houstonian in Iraq
Houston19514
Some hopeful news in today's Chronicle regarding the old cathedral building. It says they are considering possibly using it as a parish hall. So, there may be hope that it won't be torn down after all.
RedScare
I saw on Ch 13 yesterday that the dome was placed atop the structure.
Houstonian in Iraq
I saw on Ch 13 yesterday that the dome was placed atop the structure.Yeah I saw that tooI heard that they are considering NOT knocking over the current Co-Cathedral. That it may be used as a hall for the church. I guess there was a lot of opposition to getting rid of it.

Double L
Interesting. It's amazing how much bigger this is than I thought. Do any of you guys think this will be downtown's big attention getter as you look at it from the south? Montrose1100
This may be ignorance... but is Houston one of the only cities left in the world building huge Cathedrals? Perhaps this is not huge, but deep down I was hoping this current design would have been as inspiring as the original rendering I remember. Francis Xavier
Anyone know if the bell tower is still a go...Resurrecting the thread... yes, the bell tower is still in the plans but won't be built for several years until money is raised for it. They just shortened the nave and lowered the ceiling to cut costs.I wasn't sure about the church buiding when they first announced it, but I pass by it everyday on the rail and it seems more and more impressive the more I see it. I did notice that they will not be installing any windows near the ground... I think this is more to deter vandals than to provide clerestory lighting. texas911
I just drove by and its looking Big, real big! I don't like the dome on it. You can tell they designed it using CAD because its too perfect. Looks good in line drawings but from the street perspective its to shallow. Reminds me of Moe's hair cut from the 3 stooges. Reminds me of Moe's hair cut from the 3 stooges.I agree; absolute CAD. But on the other side of the coin CAD can give you a full dome if you want it. Compare it to the dome on the new courthouse. They are interchangable. I mean, if you are going to build a courthouse or cathedral dome, build it in it's fullest historic sense-not some shallow half dome that says they either hired a mediocre architect, didn't have the budget to do it right or both.
