November Mod of the Month

Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday, November 22, 2015 for a Mod of the Month open house event from 2:00 - 4:00 PM.

 

Help find new preservation-minded owners for these two well designed houses located in Hilshire Village, about seven miles west of downtown Houston. Hilshire Village is a city incorporated in 1955 and is one of the six Memorial Villages. It has a population of about 750 and is about one-third  square mile in area.

The complementary relationship of this well designed 1950s modern house to its beautifully landscaped almost half-acre ravine-front site results in forming a truly attractive property.  The long-term first owner was the well known landscape architect Joe P. Teas of Cornelius and Teas nurseries. His work strengthened the indoor-outdoor flow of the still mostly original house which includes such sought-after mod features as: tall sloped ceilings, a natural stone fireplace wall, stone floors and planter boxes, stained wood walls, special lighting, numerous built-ins, skylights, and wall to wall glass bringing in the picturesque setting. This unique early 1970s modern house has been thoughtfully designed, maintained, and updated by its original long-time owners. Privacy is maintained street side by brick walls with articulated slot and clear story windows while other elevations open wide to forested yard and patio views. A streamlined modern double-sided fireplace wall punctures the rear glass wall while it defines the living and dining areas. Many  walls, floors, and built-ins are covered with natural light-toned wood as is the barrel-vaulted rounded master bedroom.  A sauna, kitchenette and a large master bath complete this memorable suite. Special features continue into the other two bed and bath rooms plus the study.

Other News & Events

It is an exciting year-end for Houston Mod!  Besides this weekend's Mod of the Month, we soon have an exhibition opening at AIA as well as our annual Holiday Party.

 

Tuesday, November 24, 5:30-7:00 PM at AIA Architecture Center Houston (ArCH) is the opening of Houston: Uncommon Modern Photography Exhibit. The exhibition is the latest event associated with a preservation minded project that documents, analyzes and celebrates Houston's secondary and tertiary midcentury buildings hidden in full sight.  

 

 

 

Sunday, December 6 is the Houston Mod Holiday Party. Members were sent invitations via email earlier this week. If you did not receive an invitation, please contact Houston Mod to check your membership status.
