What pre-2008 crash buildings do you wish were built?

Recommended Posts

Every once in a while, I come across an old thread, dated from circa 2005 about a promising new development that it is scheduled to be built in the inner city, and it turned out that it was canned in the 2008-2009 recession. What buildings do you wish were built from that era that weren't (and permanently canned)? Keep in mind, this applies only really to projects in the 2003-2008 era, and not projects from the 1980s (sorry, I wish Bank of the Southwest Tower was built too, but not the time or place).

For starters, I thought the Shamrock Tower (even though it aped the name and concept of the defunct hotel) was kind of neat, and I definitely would've liked to see the Holiday Inn get renovated into condos, as was proposed.

What about you?

Geez.... hard to remember which buildings where proposed from pre-2008.

Bank of the Southwest (obviously).

AIM Corporate HQ for the Greenway Plaza area.  Always liked that design.

Kinda liked the idea behind the Westin-Houston Bay Area.  Living in the Clear Lake/League City area leaves me wishing at least 1 of those big mixed-use highrise included projects took off over on Clear Lake.

Right.  Anything mixed-use that got cancelled, shelved, redesigned into a smaller concept.  Pretty much anywhere in Houston.

I'd like to also nominate the non-move to Spring Woods by Exxon as a potential.  If only they had concentrated their $3 billion campus in or near Downtown!  Oh well.  Cheaper land prevailed, but CoHouston could (possibly could) of persuaded them to build east of Downtown?  That's of course debatable.

To me it's River Oaks District. The 3 or so buildings proposed were extremely modern and unlike anything that has even been built in this state since.

2nd place goes to BLVD Place with the tall Ritz Carlton, residential and office towers (which could still happen... the residential and office, not the ritz).

My vote to the Orion Tower near Memorial Park.  This was the pinkish one that looked like an Earth Wind & Fire CD cover.

Shamrock Tower (on the 609 Main site) was kind of a cheesy design with green turrets etc, but it would have been an improvement over the McDonald's and vacant lot.

I left that one out there for you to mention!

Honestly I would have preferred it to nothing, but I think the new 7 floor building going in across from the Juice Box is just fine.  While its still not great architecture, I wouldn't mind seeing it over somewhere near Bondsmen's Alley or Convict Hill!

I wish all of them where built and if we can go back even further and include transit I wish the 1983 heavy rail transit (partial subway) would have been built or the Kathy Whitmire transit plan. Also I wish all of the post 2008 crash proposals were built as well, but it seems that the cancelations have been picking up steam.

I would have also said the Orion as one of the main ones and I think it was called the Houstonian residents. I remember the Orion having a twin next to it or was that a different develpment with a similar look?
