Purpledevil
A new signal has popped up on the Houston radio dial. K294BH, a translator licensed to Rosenberg, has come on the air apparently today, and is playing quite a range of rock music. Brought to you by the folks at Radio Aleluya, the current music is most certainly temporary, but it'll maybe give you a chance to hear a few songs you may never have before on the radio, while it lasts. Blue Dogs
Purple Devil, this reminds me of 95.7 playing jazz music before the station made the switch to Hip-Hop music back in mid March 2008.
editor
Looks like it's owned by a Spanish-language religious group. Not much of a signal, even for 250 watts.
Purpledevil
Not a very long haul, at all. It is authorized for 83 meters elevation (272ft), up from the 50 meters it was broadcasting at in Simonton on 106-7 (thus the 294 channel designation).I received a report yesterday of a listenable signal in Cinco Ranch, from 106-1. It is owned by a Spanish religious group, Radio Aleluya, who also owns KFTG Pasadena (88-1), KQUE Rosenberg (980), KJOZ Conroe (880), and a slew of translators, like this 106-1, throughout the area. I believe KFTG is the originating station for programming on K294BH, but it may be the co-channel translator in Katy. While the coverage isn't much, this is likely the next step in getting a signal into Houston proper. I'd look for K294BH to apply for an increase in height, maybe even moving it to the tower currently occupied by K236AR (95-1), and covering the City like 95-1 does in the future. Only stations they have to protect would be KTTX in Brenham and KIOC over in Orange. Neither will be affected by an upgraded K294BH. Bluedogs, this is actually nothing like what happened to 95-7. "Smooth Jazz 95-7 The Wave" was a full fledged format that replaced the 40+ year country format of "KIKK 96 FM". The jazz format lasted several years, until it was replaced by the current CHR product "Hot 95-7" in '08.K294BH is a translator, upgraded if you will, that has now moved from Simonton to Rosenberg. It physically moved the entire transmission site, not just replacing formats like 95-7 did.
Blue Dogs
Who else would be affected?
Purpledevil
Any radio enthusiasts that may have been trying to tune in "Big Dog 106" from KIOC Orange is out of luck now, in the coverage area. Other licensed facilities are unaffected, as K294BH has to protect the full powered stations. It does not work both ways, however. If co-channel KTTX or KIOC were to ever apply to move closer to Houston, K294BH would have to either move out of the way, significantly decrease to an even lower power and height, or simply turn in the license. To answer the question simply, it won't affect any other licensed broadcast facility, in its current configuration.
Blue Dogs
How about the Galveston radio stations ?
Purpledevil
The only licensed station that might have cause to complain is 106-5 KOVE, a second adjacent to the Rosenberg translator. The translator has demonstrated, to thIs point, that no interference exists to hamper full powered KOVE-Galveston, with it on the air. If listeners near the translator experience interference to the KOVE signal at their location, they would have to contact Univision (owners of KOVE), explain the interference to them, and hope they follow through with a letter to the FCC asking the translator to be moved or silenced. Given that K294BH is outside of 106-5's protected contour, a complaint such as this example would likely fall on deaf ears at the Commission. Purpledevil
Updating 106-1, in today's FCC filings, the former K294BH (now K291CE) has been sold to The RAFTT Corporation for $100,000, a $50,000 brokerage agreement, and RAFTT will provide the seller with a new translator to replace K291CE. As a result, 106-1 K291CE will be retransmitting Cox Radio's 107-5 KGLK subchannel.
Blue Dogs
Which totals around $150,000 correct ?
Purpledevil
Yes. Plus a translator in return. Here's the funny part. K291CE lists KGLK Lake Jackson HD-3 as the originating station. Anyone that has an HD radio can verify that 107-5.3 is the NOAA Weather Radio station, so either 107-5 is about to lease out the HD subchannel, or 106-1 is going to be a continuous loop of weather reports delivered in a computerized voice. I'm not sure why RAFTT would do that, so I would expect something else coming to the HD3 in short order.Would be nice if instead they retransmitted the HD2. That one's the Oldies station. Purpledevil
Uh-oh...Yep, they can use the K-Breeze moniker that belongs to 1460 all they want, but they are not retransmitting KBRZ, instead it appears that K291CE is originating its own programming which is a no-no. Listed as KGLK's HD-3, which it's not, no identification of "K291CE Rosenberg", which it should, and running commercials, which it can't. This isn't KBRZ Mo. City at 1460, you can't do these things with a translator. Knowing TVJoe online, I am pretty certain that some eyebrows are about to be raised in short order. K236AR at 95-1 airs commercials too, FYI.
