Guess this skyscraper's city - like it?

Recommended Posts

I thought this might be a good social type project and just fun in general.

First, vote if you like the tower, then guess what city you think it might be in.

1) like it?

2) guess the city

If you know where it's located, please don't ruin the fun.

(it's in North America)

First one is so-so, in my opinion. It looks Chinese, but not sure where it's located in North America. It's just a rendering, right, not built yet?

Right, these are just renderings of proposed buildings.

Renderings just aren't fair. We've accumulated our own collection in the "Houston: Potential" thread, with historic examples, but to put something for another city just seems mean. Renderings most of the time aren't even built, and can range from "Wow I wish that was built here" to "What drug were you snorting when you drew this?"

Well since someone already spilled the beans on the first one...I'll say that I like number two and looks like something that would be going up in Toronto right now. Residential towers are a dime a dozen or maybe even cheaper than that up there.

Nashville, Tennessee

Giarratana Development will have its planned 505 CST skyscraper project offer residential and street-level retail space, Nashville Business Journal reports.

750 feet tall, which is the maximum height the Federal Aviation Administration has approved for the site.

All of these have been reported publicly. Many of our "potential Houston" buildings were never published. Many were just found on the last page of some developers website and many of them just conceptual dreams.

How about this one

1) like it?

2) location?

please allow others to guess if you know the answer.

i prefer the Nashville tower. this one seems like they belong on the water/coast somewhere, but they dont look Miami enough for Miami. maybe on the lake in Chicago?

All those balconies?  My guess is Miami.

OK, I'll play. I'm saying Philadelphia in case Miami and Chicago aren't right.  -_-

1. I like it.

2. Los Angeles?

For some reason it also looks like an early design of the second enron tower or at least the top part of it. Maybe I'm crazy.

Concerning the third tower:

1.  I hate it.  If it's residential, the Nashville tower is much better.  Also, one tower is bad enough, but two of these is going too far!

2.  I'll say something like this will go up in ..... Altanta.

From this rendering, it looks kinda 70'sish to me, I don't like it much. Some starchitect supposedly designed them.

It's for Miami.

I just found a few more renderings that put them in a better light, but I don't know how much better.

And you can now add Rem Koolhaas to the ever-growing list of starchitects designing luxury condos in MiamiCurbed Miami recently attended the unveiling of the Dutchman’s luxury project at Coconut Grove, which is rising conspicuously close to a project by his former student, Bjarke Ingels. Conspicuously close. But since this is Miami, Koolhaas was not the only starchitect vying for the project, known as Park Grove. He had to beat proposals from Christian de PortzamparcJean Nouvel, and Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

On the roughly 6-acre site, Koolhaas creates three 20-story cylindroid towers of glass and what appears to be concrete. The structures’ floor-to-ceiling windows—no surprise there, this is oceanfront Miami after all—are separated by vertical columns that subtly undulate as they rise. A similar design element is incorporated into Herzog & de Meuron’s luxury condos on the other side of town. Park Grove also resembles the Swedes’ latest condo project in New York City, which similarly has a rolling, curving facade. In total, the project includes 298 units and three acres of green space.

The most dramatic part of this project are the towers’ multi-story, green roof–topped bases, which house commercial tenants. In at least one of the structures, the grassy topper appears to rise into the tower itself. The project, overall, though is surprisingly restrained—appearing more like a collection of stock Miami apartment towers than the latest work of one of the world’s most acclaimed architects.

I like any building that expresses innovation in engineering but they have to function as well. Designs that provoke one's sensibilities when new may go out of fashion. OTOH if they don't push the envelope just a little they run the risk of fading into the background.

  • 3 weeks later...

1.  Looks like it belongs in a beach city.  I don't like it.  I'll say this is in Tampa Bay.

2.  Simple design, not overly done.  Can't say if I like it, I need to see better renderings.  I'll say Pittsburgh.

If not, can you say what towers are these?
