Richland Companies Planning Mixed-Use Headquarters

From the Bisnow article:

"Richland Cos is planning a new mixed-use HQ for itself, and it’s bringing in major star power. Here are Richland execs Suzanne Klein and Edna Meyer-Nelson with world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid (sitting) and designer Vladimir Kagan discussing the building plans in Miami recently. (She's the architect of the distinctive stadium for the 2022 World Cup.) She's also the first female and the first Muslim architect to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize (equivalent of the Nobel Prize), and has been named one of the most world’s most powerful women by Forbes and one of our most influential thinkers by Time."

I wonder where this will be b/c as of now they're offices are on Post Oak between I-10 and 610. Not a bad area but not a place begging for mixed-use.

And it's definitely not the area I would choose for a Zaha Hadid building. Design doesn't fit, and market wouldn't support the cost.

I'm impressed these developers are working with Zaha Hadid; take a look at their current properties! I am really excited though about the possibility of having one of her buildings in Houston. Possibility being the key word though.

Well this slipped under my radar lol. Depends on the location though. I'm sure it will be inside the loop somewhere. Pretty cool though that it's not only going to be an HQ, but a mixed use one at that. This hints that it will be a pretty substantial project.

How the f*** did this get burrrrried?

Imagine the sounds of joy and glee that would come from this forum if this happened...

and...

...wait for it...

...

...we got a "W" out of this development!

You could hear Monarch's hyperbole-isitcal outburst from Dallas if that was the case!

A Pritzker Prize winning architect designed mixed use development.. In downtown Houston? That would be almost every HAIFers ultimate fantasy. If this moves forward I see it being in the greater uptown area. But who knows..?

Downtown? If I remember correctly this is going to be near 610 and I-10. Then again I could be wrong.

Actually I think I recall that too. Maybe that's why I was thinking "greater uptown".

I was just going off the post saying they hope it gets built in downtown.

It's a big reason why I think it's been so buried. If it's downtown anything then of course it will get attention. I honestly don't see the value in building a mixed-use building of a Zaha caliber next to a freakin highway intersection, especially 610 and I-10......makes me want to have diarrhea.

Really?  What if its a "game changer?"

I just de read the thread.. 610 and i10 is around where Richland is currently at.. Not necessarily where they would build this.

Tis true, just understand that this woman is probably one of the biggest influences on me architecturally and it would be an insult if one of her buildings would be along the most over indulgent highway ever constructed.

I am excited about what she could do here in Houston and maybe move the needle of Houston's architecture scene. I just don't know how well parametric architecture that has become her hallmark will be understood by the current conservative corporate culture. There are many other reasons I'm worried about this. If you are going to go after Zaha then don't nerf her, or tone down anything.

Well enough that most of the corporate types don't hire architects like her.  They hire PickardChilton.  That's ok.  The people who hired her are apparently fans of her work, and better students of architecture than most!

What are you worried about?  Starchitects can't *only* work on museums, airport terminals and stadiums!  Lets see what she wants to do in regards to a mixed-use corporate hq + retail/hotel property - and then worry about (when/if it looks like crap).

Oh I'm fine with her taking on this project. I think it's a great opportunity. I'm concerned about the location of this project. I just don't want it next to a freeway -.-. Or dropped into suburbia like some spaceship. It should be in an urban context. I just want to know where it's actually going to be located.

How big is this thing supposed to be? Hilcorp is 23 stories and is kind of lost downtown. Amegy's 24 stories and is going to be very visible against 610.

A building doesn't need to be 50 stories and visible in the skyline to visible. It's very hard to not pick out a Zaha building. Whether it is low to the ground, isolated in the middle of nowhere, or surrounded by other buildings her work is all about sticking out. We don't even know if this is going to be a skyscraper, midrise, or multiple buildings on a campus.

I'm not the least bit worried about location.  It'll be what it will be.  If its mixed-use then I expect it will be in an area that would accommodate a mixed-use development?

If it was built Downtown on the old Post Office site - that's next to a freeway - would you still complain?  Or are you only concerned with being adjacent to *certain* freeways?

What if it is built north of Uptown Park?  Off Woodway?  What if it helps create a mixed-use zone for that whole area?  Why would that be a bad thing?  I don't understand your rationale.  Also, if it was built in Hempsted in the middle of a field... so what?  Plenty of good corporate campuses built in parklike settings away from other objects/buildings etc.  Look at Exxon - things popped up around it, but at the time it was off by itself.

You're right I'm being a tad irrational. I just want it to be really good and I'm being a little picky about it. All those locations could be interesting depending on how it is executed.
