marmer Posted June 27, 2014 Share Posted June 27, 2014 Just saw that a big mid-century house in Freeport had plans drawn by Rhodes and Tillinghast, AIA, about 1957. The homeowner says that the original owner did most of the design, so it's not clear how much actual design was done by that firm. It has a few mod details but it's not strongly modern, more of a 50s ranch with some interior brick. It looks not unlike a Lloyd Borget design. AIA Historical Directory has Tom Collins Rhodes and Josh Tillinghast listed. Tillinghast apparently spent some time with Wilson, Morris, Crain, and Anderson, and Rhodes apparently lived on Kuhlman Road, where there were some mod houses. Tillinghast seems to have been the more active; after retirement to Clear Lake Shores he died in a sailing accident. Anybody know anything more?
