To meet the growing needs of the West campus of the Texas Medical Center and the Energy Corridor, Western International purchased 5.2 acres at the corner of Barker-Cypress Road and Park Row to build a Courtyard by Marriott and a Hampton Inn Suites by Hilton. The Dallas-based company purchased the property, which is part of a site known as Ten Oaks, from Houston-based Wolff Cos. for an undisclosed amount. “The strong growth of the Energy Corridor coupled with the expansions of the Texas Medical Center – West Campus make the Ten Oaks site an ideal location to meet the growing demand for lodging in the area,” Michael Mahoney, president of Western International, said in a statement. Each hotel will have 135 rooms and is slated to break ground this summer. Hotel construction is booming in Houston. The Marriott Marquis, which will have 1,000 rooms, broke ground downtown on April 11 to help accommodate more convention business, and TRC Capital Partners and Houston-based Medistar Corp. announced earlier this month that they will develop and own a 250-room hotel at 6750 Main St. in the Medical Center. It would be cool to see a time lapse collage of the I10 corridor from Katy to Memorial City and even south along SH tollway to Briarcrest (or is that MBriar Lake?) Imagine, flying into IAH at 4:40 on a Wednesday afternoon. You get your bag and hop in a yellow cab who conveniently finds a way to hop on 610 West, your then lucky enough to sit on I-10 in the far right lane viewing all 16 lanes wide in all their glory. You realize you have been having a staring contest with a small boy sitting facing you in a volvo for the last 15 minutes, you think to yourself I haven't seen that in a while. Your on East Coast Time still and find yourself hungry. Dinner choices? How to even start, you have narrowed your options to Chilli's, Murphy's Deli or Cheddar's when the cab driver tells you OK you have arrived... btw you owe $95 dollars. Company Credit Card? You don't have cash he scolds you? hiscard machine is broken but after some pleading he tells you it will be $100 for charges and calls it in. You walk through the automatic doors at The Courtyard pictured in that bizjournals article and as you lay your head down to sleep you think THIS IS A CITY and this is an area that I want to come back to with my wife. Full disclosure I am in the EC multiple times per week and it's just so hard to get excited about anything there especially these two boring boxes - sisters to t the one I am writing this ridiculous post in (located 10 miles outside of Shreveport, Lousiana). Maybe in a decade or three, some visionary will take a chunk of land west of Katy, and create a massive urban center with a commercial hub, park, amenities, mid to high rise residential and a high tech business park fueling the 10k to 20k development.
