HARWOOD TAYLOR`S DARING 1957 MODern BRIDGE HOUSE OPEN APRIL 13, 2014, 2-4 PM

 

 

 

 

 

 

Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday, April 13, for a Mod of the Month open house event from 2 - 4 PM. 

Let's help find a  new preservation-minded owner for this vintage 1950's modern style house situated west of downtown Houston inthe Memorial villages area.

Architect Harwood Taylor of the firm Neuhaus & Taylor desinged this house for the Lomis and Marcia Slaughter family for a topographically challenging site at the north end of Kuhlman Road. 

Completed in 1957, the house bridges a ravine originating in the center of the front yard, widening and deepening under the front stairs toward the expansive naturalistic sloped rear side of the nearly acre sized property.  Floor to ceiling walls of glass view the setting from every major room. Steel I- beams compose a system of exposed columns while steel bar joists, some exposed, support the flat roof. 

The Houston Mod publication Booming Houston and the Modern House-  Residential Architecture of Neuhaus & Taylor, 1955- 1960 thoroughly describes Houston's architectural scene at the time this house was designed.  It also details a number of other designs by Harwood Taylor.

  

On Sunday, please park in the cul-de-sac at the north end of Kuhlman Road and walk down the private lane to the house. There are three parking spaces at the house reserved for visitors who require less walking.
