HeightsGuy
Officers order the homeless to pack up and goSure, I'm a bleeding heart liberal, but even the most conservative out there must realize that when you kick homeless people out of one area and don't give them any option besides an order to start walking, all that's going to happen is they are going to show up somewhere else. And when you kick them out of downtown, we all know right where they're headed - to a vacant lot in midtown. HeightsGuy
Sorry, thought the story was from today since the paper listed that it was filed at 1:21 pm on 1/24/06. My bad.
WesternGulf
I don't think its that but more like midtown residents and Houston residents in general have noticed this a long time ago.

The Great Hizzy!
The Eastex near MMP is definitely a popular hangout spot for the Homeless. Of course, a shelter is nearby so...
HeightsGuy
Still, it's just ridiculous pulling Cops off their beat to go roust homeless people in some sort of ode to Sisyphus with no tools at their disposal other than telling them to go anywhere other than where they currently were. It would be just as productive to have cops move rocks from one side of a street to the other.
Jax
http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=...&id=5599440I've seen huge crowds of homeless in the mornings on San Jacinto somewhere between McGowan and Webster. Is that this SEARCH place that they are talking about? A few times I saw police talking with some of them, but they always seem to be there whenever I drive downtown along San Jacinto in the morning. MidtownCoog
The police have tolerated them at Hadley & San Jacinto for years. Just like they do with the male toots at San Jacinto & Tuam.I once had HPD tell me "y'all need to move. It's just not safe down here". Jax
Is that because of SEARCH? Or is there some other reason they hang out on that corner?
MidtownCoog
You know, Search never looked that bad. I think Search shoos them away. The Search building is kinda cool. Very East Block. There are also a couple of other half-way houses near by. One at Tuam and Austin and another on La Branch. Throw in a little Club Houston action is it's a receipie for disaster. WestGrayGuy
The homeless seem to be getting more aggresive. Not only with they offer to watch your car while you go eat at say BW3, now they want to wash your windows with their "squeegee" and "water". Anytime I may venture into the CVS in midtown, there always seems to be a homeless person waiting outside. I even heard a woman who lived nearby in Post Midtown say that they follow her home sometimes.Has anyone else noticed these more aggressive variety? Jax
Maybe it's a different place where I see the crowds, but it's definitely on San Jacinto before Highway 45.

MyHomeHouston
This thread reminds me of a video I caught on YouTube, that was a story on how much money window washers could actually make. I haven't really caught any homeless folk washing windows lately, but I've certainly never ran across an aggressive one.
Jax
In Toronto and Montreal, the "squeegee kids" are all over the place. I have only seen that once here in Houston. There are a lot of people begging on crowded pedestrian streets in Montreal but they seem more spread out. Here you see them all congregating on one block, which I still don't understand. Last time I drove downtown on San Jacinto there must have been 20 or 30 of them hanging out on one corner...I think there is a soup kitchen or something in the church across from Hermann Park, because I saw them waiting in a line on Tuesday when I was in the train on the way to the medical center. Mr. Chenevert
I almost punched a homeless guy in the face for the first time ever.I was at the CVS in Midtown, he asked me on my way in for money, I said no. He asked me on my way out, I said no. I then heard him say "Im gonna break someones car" in an aggrevated, but soft voice.I turned around and asked him to repeat what he just said. He wouldnt of course and just walked off.If my gf hadnt been right there, I would have put his face into the wall, and I am not a violent person at all. The homeless need to go away. Vertigo58
Can relate, they don't care if your with a woman. One day at lunch a female coworker and I walked to lunch at midday. This guy that looked well enough to work told me (not asked) to give him money. I ignored him as we were in the middle of crossing the street seeing if cars wouldnt hit us. He kept on our heels she was visibly getting nervous and he again demanded $. I told him I couldn't or didnt have any, he started yelling and cursing at both of us. He finally stopped and went the other way to attack others coming out of the eatery.Guess you have to experience it to beleive that was kind of too close for comfort. I avoid eye contact as much as possible. Its harder at when stopped at a red light, because your normally blocked in by other cars. Seeing these guys drinking booze at 6:00am while I'm walking to work is surreal, but I guess others find it normal. Again, experience 1st hand to understand right. MidtownCoog
Update from 1:00 today. I drove by Search after lunch on the way back from my Friday Spec's Warehouse ritual.Midtown, we have a problem! It's a mini-"tent city" across from Rich's entracne on the back side of Search. People sleeping everywhere, hanging out walking in the street, etc. I even saw three different black pimps with their white trash pregnant ho's. I am not joking. I am used to the bums in Midtown but this is something new. When in the world did it get this bad? This has to be the end result of the Operation Bum Sweep under Pierce Elevated.
