If the child goes to a school over two miles away, they can ride the bus, with pick up and drop off at their zoned school, or the parents can take them.

AFAIK if someone goes to a magnet program, yes, they get bus transportation. If they do a district transfer without a magnet program involved they do not get transportation.

The loss of CVHS was one reason why Jones High School collapsed. There was tension between the magnet and non-magnet parts and the magnet parents decided to leave: http://www.houstonpress.com/2002-03-07/news/the-great-divide/ and the followup: http://www.houstonpress.com/2002-04-18/news/a-split-decision/

CV startef on the Jones campus, then moved to an old elementary school, befote going to the new location on Taft.

A bus would come out of the way to pick up one person?

It's not unheard of. I remember back when I was in kindergarten or first grade and rode a bus, the bus added maybe a 3 mile round trip to get this one girl back to her home past the airport (this was back in the mid-1990s)

I've never seen just one kid waiting for a bus, but it could happen. The bus routes seem to be optimized, and will visit several schools to pick up kids and drop off at several more.
