As for a large 4 block traffic circle - its too late to redesign Downtown for something like that - but Eastern/Northern Downtown and Main might be able to have something that size or scale? kennyc05 Posted October 31, 2014 Share Posted October 31, 2014 Sorry for bumping this but I'm in downtown Indianapolis and we just walked by this circle fountain/central square type area with a big monument and fountains in the middle and it got me thinking of this thread. Why can't Houston build a monument thing like this to itself in the middle of an intersection in downtown, maybe towards the southeast or northeast side of the cbd. Somewhere currently surrounded by vacant blocks so they have room to build the circle and spur development on the 4 blocks around it/that part of downtown. Rice has a nice fountain and plaza between the Jones Biz School and Baker School buildings. Downtown has plenty of smaller ones as part of the Cotswold Project. NenaE Posted January 22, 2015 Share Posted January 22, 2015 I understand the distinction, but I have never thought much about how many there are. I was surrounded by fountains growing up here. They were by the zoo, at the cemetery entrance, in the shopping malls, at the restaurants (Kemah's Jimmie Walkers penny fountain, Don the Beachcomber's Koi pond/ waterfall), and presently at the hospitals (waterfalls). IMO, they aren't just visual decorations. They have a distinct purpose...They calm and cool a very hot place. Too bad the Prudential's is gone. There was the big controversy with them renovating the fountain with new stone material on the outside, then I guess they took it all back down? Last time I paid attention they still hadn't put the "Mecom Fountain" letters back on the side.
