7thGen Posted February 28, 2013 Share Posted February 28, 2013 My husband and I fell in love with and purchased a MCM home in need of many repairs a year ago. We are now just looking into replacing all 13 of the horizontal slider windows and the three- panel sliding glass door unit. We want to replace the windows with low-profile aluminum ones (mill finish or clear anodized) similar to the originals. For the sliding door replacement, we would also like a silver color and a low profile. Does anyone have suggestions for something available locally? njmays Posted March 4, 2013 Share Posted March 4, 2013 I recently had a large aluminum slider replaced in my kitchen, along with a 8'x8' sliding patio door (one side fixed the other side slid) and used Sherwood Gregory at Custom Windows of Houston ( 713)864-2747. They did a real nice job for the price. He will talk quite a lot, but his price is great and the end product is good. He uses Milguard windows sometimes, which you can find through other sources as well. For the patio door, his custom fabricated door was about $2500 cheaper than the quote I got from Western Window Systems. The Milguard windows are considered the lower end of the spectrum as compared with Fleetwood, Western, etc. but I have been very happy with the one we had installed. It is about 5' tall by 6' wide. We ended up splurging on the entry level Fleetwood slider ($2500 for a 3 panel 12x8) and going with Western Window Systems for the horizontal sliders. Specwriter Posted March 10, 2013 Share Posted March 10, 2013 I bit the bullet about 4 years ago and put high-quality windows in my 1968 vintage house. I'm glad I did. Performance is better, maintenance is easier and they look great. Total cost was about a year's worth of mortgage payments (plenty of large windows) but I am very satisified with the results. We bought these for our house and they are sturdy and come with a lifetime warranty. As for the windows i heard vinyl is better. I got both of my doors replaced by conservation construction. Of course the best thing would have been to keep all the original windows in place. They can be cleaned and sealed to perform as new. Vinyl windows seem to ruin the looks of any house. They have the thick glossy plastic looking frames, far wider than the original windows, which reduces the glass area by 20-30%. They have to make the frames so wide because the vinyl is very flimsy. Crappy glass, hard operation, etc. We replaced our aluminum frame windows on a 1952 ranch with wood/fiberglass windows, and they are great.
