Poker, slots and casinos. Tuesday is Trifecta day in the House. Gaming supporters will get their first hearing of the session on Tuesday as they bring a slew of bills to expand gambling in Texas at a time when the state faces a $23 billion shortfall in the next two years and is in desperate need of non-tax revenue.

The committee will hear a range of gambling options that supporters hope to get through the conservative House. They have pointed to thousands of new jobs, $1 billion in new revenue and polls that show a strong majority of Texans favor gaming.

Opponents have argued that gambling is an undependable way to finance the state, preys on the poorest Texans and creates social ills.

Any provision to expand gaming beyond the state Lottery and horse and dog racing would have amend the state constitution, requiring a two-thirds majority of both the House and Senate and voter approval.

The proposals include legalizing and regulating poker parlors, allowing slot machines at existing race tracks, allowing Indian tribes to operate games, slot machines at Bingo halls to full-fledged resort casinos.

In all, nine proposed constitutional amendments allowing the various forms of gaming are scheduled to be heard by the committee.

Stock market, lottery, slots, poker....people will always want to use money to make more money. Let them have as much choice as possible. The notion that only the poor gamble with their money is a little rich. Or not.

I'm not fond of the idea, but with as many people going over to LA, OKC, and NM to run slots and such, I wouldn't mind the money staying a little closer to home.

Hopefully they'll do it right and make a limited number of licenses to keep it from mushrooming then collapsing. Gonna really suck for LA and secondly Oklahoma. People will still gamble in New Mexico because of the mountain based recreation they provide year round.

You don't think that some savvy casino developer wouldn't build an indoor ski slope or artificial snow on a hill in central Texas? The advertising slogan, "Ski Texas!" would be very memorable.

People go to New Mexico to be outdoors, then typically stop in to gamble. People going to an indoor ski-resort in central Texas would likely not be the type that already go to New Mexico, but rather LA and OK already - or perhaps even Vegas.

However, I would enjoy both. B)

People already go to central Texas to be outdoors. All it would take is to put some artificial snow on a hill, establish a museum of classy vaginas that people are willing to take their kids to but that are inappropriate for their kids to snicker at, and get a bunch of pseudo-artists to set up shop nearby. Instant success.

I surely hope I wasn't the only one to choke on their drink while reading this.

Someone already did this. It's called Austin.
