editor
The Architecture of Madness: Insane Asylums in the United StatesCarla Yanni2007 - University of Minnesota Press$55.68 on AmazonI haven't read this book, myself. But because of its unique content, I think it deserves a mention here on HAIF.Chapter 1 begins with London's (in)famous Bethlem, the oldest psychiatric institution in Europe and the epitome of pre-Enlightenment, brutal approaches to madness. Yanni moves briskly into an overview of late-18th-century British and French institutions, modeled on the Enlightenment ideal of "moral treatment." She concludes with England's York Retreat, which ushered in a model of psychiatric hospitalization embraced by American "alienists," characterized by separation from society, a healthful environment, and avoidance of mechanical restraints. Here's a link to a full review of the book: http://psychservices.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/60/8/1147Amazon HAIF-helping link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0816649391?ie=UTF8&tag=glasssteelandsto&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0816649391Amazon clean link: http://www.amazon.com/Architecture-Madness-Asylums-Landscape-Culture/dp/0816649391/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1249649672&sr=8-
